Drove by a few lakes this afternoon. Gull main lake looked a little wet yet running from the bluff south. Round had one open spot near the southwest side. North Long 371 is iced up all the way accross and a couple of anglers off the north side. Nisswa lake was froze up and had one portable out there. Couple of more days and we should have a good start. Early ice can be fun but it is also a time we need to be careful and use our heads. With these cold temps waiting even one day can make a big difference. The forecast is looking great.

Yeah, some of you guys are pretty nuts. Especially the picture of the hole that looks like its 1.5-2 inches of ice! However, I am hoping to get up to my cabin this weekend in Pine River. Its a small 85 acre lake so I'm hoping that with the single digit highs this week there will be 5-6 inches of ice by then. Wishful thinking?

Looks like Gull Blew open last night. Hopefully the wind doesn't mess things up too bad.

Sounds like most of the area's smaller lakes are walkable now. I'm thinking about heading home this weekend from school to finally get on the ice.

Great report Kingfish! Good luck today, hope you and your kids get them again. We caught some really nice fish this fall out there. I'm glad that they are still biting. Should be a great start to the winter season on the north end of the lake.

Things are shaping up to be a great weekend around the Nisswa area. The ice conditions are great, with most anglers walking or taking sleds/atvs out to the hot spots. The ice has been 7-10 inches in most places and not much snow, maybe 3-4 inches. I still advise checking as you go, you just never can be too safe. Crappies are going good so far on many of the smaller lakes. Some of my favorites are the Gull Chain, Sibley, West Twin, Clamshell, and Gladston. The walleye action is getting better on the bigger lakes. There are good reports coming from the north end of Gull, mid lake of North Long, the south end of Pelican as well as some of the mid lake rocks. Crappies have been chowing down on Demon jigs, Ratsos, or even a plain hook and minnow. For walleyes don't forget to grab a couple of Northland Buckshop spoons. Tip it with a minnow head and you are all set. We also have a bunch of new and re-sharpened auger blades to get you started for the season. Good luck and we'll see you on the water.

Question related to Walleye: I seem to keep having trouble catching them in the winter. I use buckshot spoons and others, but when they come in to take a look they do not bite (camera) I have lots of fish come in and look but very few bites. I have tried multiple presentations but seem to get very few "hits" I do catch 1-2 a day but still would like to learn more.

On the south end...   Good fishing this week with nice numbers of walleyes and saugers.   A jig and frozen emerald shiner again this week is the go to presentation for walleyes.  Rainbows and fatheads are also working and it is nice to see what the fish want each day.   Various areas across the south shore are holding fish.  Most walleyes and saugers are being caught in 17 - 24' of water.  Anglers are anchoring up and vertical jigging. A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.  Pound the bottom, jig it up in the strike zone, hold.  Trying shaking the jig and lifting it off of the bottom.  Any kind of weight will be a fish hanging.  Set the hook! A mixed bag while fishing walleyes include pike, jumbo perch and a few crappies.  On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes caught  this week on the river in 10 - 15' of water.  Typical spots such as holes, current breaks, weed edges and rocky areas all can hold fish.  There are 42 miles of navigable waters from the mouth of the river all the way to Birchdale.    Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st.   The river holds good numbers of smallmouth bass for those interested in bronzebacks.  A lot of bass are caught by unsuspecting walleye anglers. Up at the NW Angle...  A great week of fishing.  As typical with guests staying at the Angle, some fish MN waters, some slide over into Ontario waters.  Both areas are producing.     Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water have been holding walleyes.  With warming waters, fish are in transition and there are lots of fish.   The goto presentation is a jig and minnow.  Gold, glow white, pink and orange are good colors.

I don't fish any secret lakes. I research the lakes on the DNR website with good walleye numbers. I spent a lot of time learning side imaging. I'll scan for an hour or two if need be to find the fish. Nothing crazy for techniques. Either pitching a jig or back trolling with lindy rigs. If either of you two ever want to go let me know

So much rain these past few weeks. I only seem to get days off post cold front. Made the most of it recently. Water Temps still in the 50s. Not sure the crappies have even spawned, definitely not the bluegills. Walleye still really shallow

Took my dad out Sunday afternoon SW of St Cloud. Spot Locked in 8-9 ft on weed edge.  Caught several crappie and sunfish in just the one spot.  Also caught several 3 inch bass.  Pesky little things. Both crappie and sunfish  had eggs. I expected the crappie to be done, as I know sunfish need warmer water yet.  Temp on locator was 65. First fresh fish since last fall. Very tasty.
