You should do very well. 1.6 has been the magic #. good luck. There are some nice ones in there. I drank beer till sunset and then did my fishing. That seemed to work good.

My dad and I hit Waconia last night before the wind switched. Started pulling spinners with crawlers and gulp minnows and picked up one nice and healthy 19.75 inch fish. Marking tons of fish we switched to a lindy with leech and crawler and ended the night with four nice healthy eyes. 2-18's, 19.75, and a nice end to the night 24 incher. They were really aggresive but holding in just a few places. Mud to hard bottom transitions from 14-24 feet. Good luck to anyone thats heading out tonight hopefully the wind calms down. Ill try to get pics on tonight!

Nice fish! The last time I had an "aggressive" bite on Waconia was from sheepshead! Did the gulp work?

I caught up with Andy today to do some fishing for panfish. I knew the winds would be strong and they sure were! We headed out about 8am to a small lake west of the metro area to try locating some big crappies. We launched and fished for various spots for an hour or so but we couldn't locate a single crappie. I know they are there because I caught them there a couple weeks ago. All we could find were dink sunfish and a couple bite offs, probably from pike.

Good thing we had a plan B. We packed up and headed into the metro area and launched the boat. The shallows were clear, which usually doesn't help the fishing out there. I caught a nice bluegill right away...

Some friends and I hit a lake just south of the metro on Thursday night and landed over 52 sunnies, about 6 small crappies, and 2 bass (too bad the season is not open for them quite yet, the people fishing out from us landed about a 24 in bass too) in about 1 1/2 hours. Was one of the best days of fishing I've had since the beginning of the ice fishing season smile.

The only eye I saw was about 6 in and a kid was catching it off the landing dock as we were trying to start my friends truck, which we found out the alternator went out on frown.

I plan on heading back out to the lake I was at Thursday with some friends tonight in the early evening. They are still hitting pretty well I guess, so we'll see what happens smile. It's a little drive out of the cities, but well worth it as there is a nice spot to fish off shore. smile

Fished Waconia Sunday night and it was very slow, not much luck at all. Quite a few boats out there at sun down though. Any pointers?

We were also out their Sun night, lots of boats but not too many fish. We were fishing mid lake structure and caught one 14 incher and a 26 incher that was real healthy. Also the dreeded sheephead made an apperance at susnset. Only one other fish seen in the net and that was probably around 23 inches and caught and released. Pulling rigs. Right at dark fish started moving up as we were marking them on the sonar but no takers and had to get home. Lots of people trolling high banks but didnt see anyone catch anything, Anyone report the light bulb out at the access we came in and almost hit a boat because he took down his white light before trailering up it was a close one!!! If anyone has reported it please post when u have time.

Tonka was very slow Sunday as well. If it weren't for perch and crappie, I would have been skunked. Lasting effects of that big cold front that rolled through on Friday night. I hope it (the fronts) doesn't become a weekly occurence like we had this winter! Good Luck!

Spent yesterday on Minnetonka guiding for pike. Spinnerbaits were our best friend. We fished anywhere from 3-15 feet and focused primarily on the weeds. We did catch one fish out on the rocks but everything else was weed orientated. Mainlake was tough, we spent all of our time tucked into the bays along shoreline structure. Also tied into several nice bass. Should be a great opener out there today!

Water temps were anywhere from 61-66 on the spots we fished. We didn't go way up into the shallows so temps might have touched the upper 60's in those areas. Mainlake Tonka was at 61.

Several spots that typically hold weeds this time of year were barren for the most part. All that was there were short stalks and not many fish using the deeper weeds from what we could gather. A wierd day but we did find a lot of fish.

All of the big boats are out in full force now too. Makes cruising across mainlake a little more interesting when you have 3-4 foot waves crossing from every direction smile

Good luck to everyone who makes it out this weekend! Have a safe and fun Memorial Day!

Got out on Waconia today for the bass opener. Lots of males in the 15 to 18 inch range working the inside weed edge. Found good concentrations in a couple of spots where there was some cabbage in and around the inside of the milfoil line. Caught bass on spinnerbaits and crankbaits depending on the depth and weeds. Water is not very warm yet (64 degrees). We need a warm, sunny week to get some bigger fish going along with the males. Good luck--be safe!

Did well in 8-10 feet of water for bass using spinners and dare devels, those new clacker raps really worked good also. Also had 4 musky follows today alone. Probably up to about 30 follows since northerns opened up, looking forward to june 6.

I hear that... those ski boats really know how to ruin a good day of fishin'.

Got out in the float tube last night on a small metro area lake targeting bass. I had an extra rod riged for panfish too. The lake was very scummy so I stuck with a Chatterbait. Here's what I caught on my little metro outing. A few dink bass like this...

P5280033.jpg

Some small sunnies like this...

P5280032.jpg

And three pike. One was upper 20's, The largest was 31". I was very impressed by this pike. It was very thick and tall and put up a great fight in the float tube! Here's the biggest one...

P5280040.jpg

Look at how wide this beast is, must have been chowing on some sunnies...

P5280041.jpg

I know there are some pig bass on this lake, I just didn't get any last night, oh well.

I've never seen Waconia's water so clear and weed free. That being said, and I think fairly relivant, the bass are not in the shallow water yet. I think once we have an algea bloom, we will see the bass in the shallows. (yes there are some small males in the shallows).

Caught two shorts(walleye)and a couple sheepies trolling raps on Saturday night. I counted a total of 2 boats on the entire lake after 9:30.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
