Metro Area Minnesota Fishing Reports & Ice Conditions

Recommended Posts

Had an excellent afternoon/evening with my almost-five-year-old. 11 Crappies, 25 Sunfish, a 3-4# Northern and a 27 1/2" walleye. That walleye came minutes after another one in the same size range. He held his own although he missed a LOT more than he caught. He developed a near-the-boat method that was remarkably effective.

Also, the crappie hybridization in this particular lake has produced some really weird-looking crappies. We had one that was almost silver with a few blackish blotches and one that was marked like a silver and black version of a Rock Bass. Granted it's coming up on spawn and their full colors are coming out (only one jet-black male in the catch) but in the past the White/Black hybrids were obvious.

Sounds like you'd best leave Karl's Lake while you can still drive.

Fished tonka last night from about 5-8:45. Fished mostly in the main lake and then some down around the islands by Enchanted Island. Did pretty good on largemouth fishing with a shallow running rapala and small spoons, with most of the fish coming in about 4-7 FOW on in the main lake. Not much happening with top water baits nor with spinners. Also only caught one northern, although it was a decent sized one in the upper 20s. Going to try it again later this week and see if the bite continues.

Fished tonka again last night from 630-9, same areas, same baits. Caught some (10 or 12 boated with a fair number tossing the hook between 4 of us) but not as many as yesterday, and actually most of the fish caught were on spinner baits, which we didn't try on Sunday. The sunnies are really starting to guard their nests, we drifted over some areas that had hundreds within 50 feet of each other and were so aggressive we caught them on larger bass baits. Great night to be on the water.

Fished Tonka today for bass from about 7am-11am. Bite was good before and during the rain, but tapered off when the rain stopped. Caught a total of 8 (which is the slowest day of the year so far for me) but the average size was pretty nice. All were 2-4 lbs.

Fished Carl's lake this morning, lindys and leeches or crawlers worked equally as well, plenty of decent sized sunnies, one crappie big enough to keep and 3 pike in about 2 hours. Fished on the weedline. Fish shut down about 11am, couldnt buy a bite after that.

Thx for update, taking my nephew out tomorrow. I know there are Walleyes in there and would love to chase em but I'm guessing he is going to want to throw for bass/pike. Will report back.

a buddy and I fished tonka again last night from 6-930, north Arm and Maxwell. Started with plastics and spinners on the outside weed line in about 12 fow. Nothing. Then tried inside weed line and added a top water frog to the arsenal. Nothing. Around 8:00 the bite turned on a bit for the top water frogs. Ended up with a few largemouth each and a few more misses. Great night up be on the water.

Anyone else think the bite might have waited to turn on due to the heat? The water temp was 85 degrees!

Looking for a spot in Anoka county to catch some bullheads! Any suggestions? Most the lakes are so loaded with sunnies you cant get to the bullheads. Any advice appreciated.

Peltier dam has so many they are literally jumping out of the water. I never thought I'd catch a bullhead on a dry fly.

Lots of 6-8 inchers.

My brother and I are looking to get out this Sunday. We would like to do a little bass and muskie fishing. Haven't been out on either lake yet this year, just wondering if anyone is having any luck on these lakes.

Thanks,

This weekend was a better bite for Northern and Bass. Fished all over the east side of Tonka using mostly spinners and cranks. Saturday probably got a dozen northern and a dozen bass fishing the outside of the milfoil. (Missed about a dozen more northern, and actually caught a crappie and bluegill on the spinner) Cool weather kept the crazies off the lake till around noon so it was a really nice time. Today, the drizzle kept the lake pretty empty again. Same tactic as Saturday and picked up another dozen northern and a couple of bass in the 1-3 pound range (and another really hungry sunny). Northern were smaller (nothing bigger then 24) but were aggressive. I had a number chase my spinner right up to the boat.

We went to Tonka. We fished mainly in Smiths and Crystal. No muskie action, but did catch quite a few northern and largemouth once we donwsized or presentation.

Fished Maxwell Bay of Lake Minnetonka, and almost had what looked like a 12+ inch largemouth explode on my hooked leech with a bobber as I was moving it across the water. After struggling with it for a little bit, it decided to dive into a huge clump of weds to break free, and it worked. OH well, least I got out onto the lake!

I fished Normandale Lake this afternoon, and caught 4 northerns within the first hour, and 3 black crappie shortly after that. I had a great time fishing with a father and his son who was just learning how to fish. It felt great to help him out. They gave me their nightcrawlers that they didn't need after that, so it was a great day! Moreso to see a father instilling a lifelong hobby to his son.

Fished Waconia on 8/13 2-4 PM. First time on lake, and I was surprised how green and weedy it was. caught a few tiny LM Bass, and quite a few small sunnies and a couple crappies, nothing at all of size.

Fished Tonka last night from about 5:30 to 8:30. Stuck to the east end out of the wind. Best night of fishing I've had in a while. Used spinnerbaits between 4 and 12 feet in and out of milfoil and cabbage. In about 3 hours caught over a dozen bass and about a dozen northern. One pike was 32", missed another one at the boat that was equally as big. Pike were very aggressive. Had lots of follows to the boat, and some hit the spinner multiple times.

So i realized on my way to Waconia there was a detour onHwy 5 West. I had no idea where i was going so went to a different lake. Whats the best alternate route to there if i am coming from that way?

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
