2020 Mille Lacs Lake Fishing Reports

The best way to get your questions answered is to call some of the resorts. They will give you fishing info and you can buy a road pass from them. They usually have their plowed roads mapped and staked for safer ice travel

Just depends where you are driving. Plenty of info in the threads and if you are not familiar with the lake just call the resorts in the area you would like to go out on. I just got back from an overnighter and it was prertty dismal. No pic/story time from this trip. Only landed a few perch and one small eye. Lost a pig in the hole and couple pike run and drops. I'm sure the fishing will get better this afternoon, since I will be at work.

Much slower for us this weekend compared to last. Only got four tonight, and none of them were big enough to keep. We did straighten the hook out on a big one (anyone else unhappy with the quality of the hooks on some Northland products?), but that was the only real excitement for us.

I was on the lake all day today (Friday). Picked up one nice jumbo in the morning and marked some others in the area but they only sniffed and swam away. Everything disappeared mid-morning so we started trying other areas. Marked only a handful of fish throughout the day, nothing would bite. Finally right before dark we got another keeper perch and at dark a 24" walleye.

I was also up all day with limited action, did manage a 14" perch and a buddy released a 28" walleye at dark. Lot of weather and wind changes that might have shut things down, or perhaps I was in the wrong areas.

I went out to the Gravel Bar and had good luck on some Jumbo's 12-13". They all hit on Grubs 3 hung on #8 Red Treble below a Rainbow Kastmaster using 6lb. mono (3") below the spoon.

Another slow morning. Only got one fish, a 25'', at 7:30. Still haven't caught--or seen--one perch where we are. Thinking we're going to be moving the house this afternoon.

On a side note, a buddy of ours has been whacking the smallies....he's got about 20 over the last three weeks, including three last night and one this morning. I've only caught one through the ice in almost 20 years of fishing the lake, so I don't know what he's doing so special.

A couple quick photos from Friday. It was a dreary day, and slow fishing, so I only have one nice photo of the sun before it set. Late in the day the inside of my portable turned bright orange, which was a big surprise after the long slow cloudy day so I stuck my head out for this photo.

And here is my dad with the 24" walleye. With our rods scattered on the floor and the sunflower inches from burning a hole in my pants, we didn't have much room for a nice photo so Dad had to hunch over a bit while standing in the corner as far as he could.

Where are the perch??? Slow day out here. Sitting in 30' out of fishermans warf and sewing nothing but dinks, and they don't even want to bite. Anyone doing better?

Dusty, we are out here also. What depth are you in? We are in 30' on the farside of henn island reef. Got here around 1 pm and only have a perch so far. Waiting for the sundown bite to start.

As seen from my earlier post today, things were slow for me today. 3 keeper perch all day, threw back probably 10-15 dinks. No walleye. Fished until 6:00. Thirty feet on a rocks to sand transition. Saw tons of perch all day on the camera and flasher but they just didn't generally want to bite....

tried posting a pic here but i've been having trouble getting it to start for some reason....this was my brothers first trip to mille lacs...as you can see we had a pretty good day from sunup to sundown....we went out of appledorns and fished 4 different spots...all produced at least one.....thanks to appledorns for taking care of a safe passage....needless to say i think my brother will be back!

Pretty tough day out there yesterday. Caught a ton of perch, with about a half dozen nice ones. Also lost 3 nice walleyes by/in the hole, and caught some kind of minnow/chub out in 32 FOW. Fished anywhere from 15-39 FOW, and caught fish at just about every depth we tried. The shallower 15-19 FOW had by far the most aggressive fish, but size was lacking the most with the biggest at 11 inches. Best presentation was a 1/16th oz. Firetiger Frostee tipped with a few euro larva, although the 1/16th oz. Lindy Rattlin Flyer in Purple Smelt with a minnow head produced more of the fish in the later part of the afternoon.

Pretty good fishing this weekend. A group of five guys caught 35 fish, 12 or so keeper walleyes, and 1 28" walleye. The trick was a dead stick or rattle wheel with a fathead and a white hook. Red glow hook was a close second.

Fished some shallower rocks saturday and did ok for the walleyes. We had a fair amount of action from 11a-2p, decent amount of fish moving through but most action came on tip ups. When the sun came out in the late afternoon early evening we hit a lull in the action. Once the sun went down the fish started coming back through. Few fish on tip ups and they started hitting jigs but wouldnt crush them. The key was a live rainbow dead sticked when they came in to investigate raise away from them and if they followed they'd hit.

They were still moving through in schools every 30 minutes or so when we left at 6:30p to make it to dinner on time.

My dad lives up that way and said earlier in the week when there was less driving traffic the bite was better. It seems the increased activity shallower was scattering the fish.

When u guys say shallow rocks how shallow are you talking? I went out of lybacks and Friday and got 3 walleyes and quite a few perch and I. Was in 21 ft which I didnt think was very shallow but the lady at lybacks considered that shallow jus wondering what you guys thought.

The family and I went to mille lacs for the first time this year. We caught half a dozen of jumbo perches, and a half dozen of keeper eyes. Caught and released a 23" and a 24". It was fun reeling them in!!! I also lost a monster eye at the hole. My wife yanked at my line...(when I told her not to),,,and........ snap! Oh well. We just laughed about it.

We lost a bunch of light biters too. Overall it was a nice and sunny day to be out. The wind was not bad at all. We launched out of Fisherman's Wharf and fished at about 35FOW. Ice was about 19" where we were at.

Happy fishing!!

Are you guys making the Eyes chase the jig/lure or just jigging it stationary for the Eyes to hit?

I am having a hard time making the, what I think are Eyes, hit my jig/lures.

Flushed 3 pheasants today with Hazel but they were flushing 50 yards a head of her. Then we went by some little berries that looked black and hazels tail started going a brown bird gets up I thought hen then the bird banked and it was a grouse. It was good to get her out in the woods. I seen a few pheasants in picked corn fields.

Walked today and yesterday, flushed 9, shot at two and got two. Hopefully next year I'll have a dog to hunt with. Still warm up here, skim of ice on ponds. Weather has been nice. Hopefully walk a bit more the next few weeks. Been pretty cautious walking for birds to not interfere with deer hunters. There sure are not the deer hunters there used to be

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
