hillman told me he never used to go out as far as he does now.said there seemed to plenty of good fishing within first 5 or 6 miles.of course maybe its the amount of fisherman there that pushes the roads so far now?

i was there 2 weeks ago & a CO stopped to check us. he was off his sled & in the door in about 2 seconds.thats rite, in the door.opened it up, took a step in & gave us the same old routine of thinkin we were fish poachin dopers.kept askin us where the fish were & lookin around.checked our coolers & everything.didnt ask about moose burger, deer steaks, or home butchered beef(all legal).goin back next week with the old man & hope we dont run into some young gung-ho rude kid lookin to make a reputation.spoils the experience.first time i ran into a rude co.

Funny... 15+ trips over the past years, and never ran into a CO. Anywhere you go they can be good or bad. Anyways, any recent reports? Thinkin about heading up again next weekend.

Two of us were up there out of Carsella's from yesterday to this morning, it was slow. There was no pattern on how to catch them but the color of choice was red. However, we did take home 4 fish though and threw back 4 others that were under than 12". I hope to get out again soon, and will leave a report! Good Luck guys.

I think the road started going further with the crappie boom.It would be interesting to know where the road use to go 20 years ago

Fished upper red fri-sun morning. Extremely slow most of the fish we caught were during the night on the rattle wheels. Marked plenty of fish and threw the whole tackle box at them to no avail. Stayed at Portavilla nice place and will stay there again in the future when the bite picks up.

There were 3 of us up out of West Wind Friday to Sunday morning......slow fishing. We did end up with our limit but barely. Funny thing was we neer caught on fish over the slot in our house. Either too small or a keeper. Good time was had by all but I hope it picks up for those of you on your way soon. By far our best presentation was a plain red hook with a fathead. Had some shiners..not a bite on those.

Three of us were up over the weekend (Friday-Sunday morning) and we did pretty well, caught about 30 walleyes when all said and done and probably lost or missed ten or so. We brought home our limit and did catch two over the slot, an 18 and the other just over 21, the other fish all were between 12 and 16. The bite was pretty light and we marked alot of fish that would come and look and not hit. It was split between dead stick and jigging catching fish. I caught the jigging ones on a small red spoon and the other guys caught theirs on a swedish pimple. The dead stick fish were split between shiners and fatheads and it did not make a difference on hook color (we caught them with red, blue and plain). Thanks to Jerry and Matt at Battle River Lodge for a great time!!

Was up Friday through Sunday morning with 4 guys out of West Wind. Out about 2-3 miles in about 13ft of water. Fishing was slow on Friday, didn't get a bite or mark a fish until the sun went down. Ended up with 7 keepers throught the night, Threw back about 5 that were to big and 5 that were to small. Saturday We caught fish though the day but very sporadic. Had them move through about once every hour. Only one of the guys in our house was getting them though, On a medium sized Orange and yellow buckshot with a Minnow head from a fat head. They were hitting it with out jigging. fish were bitting on the rattle wheels all night on plain red hook and medium sized fat head. Action picked up from 6am to 7am. Had 8 more keepers all day Saturday into Sunday morning.

All in all we had a great time up there. Can't wait to get up there again.

Was up Fri - Sunday morning...real slow until Saturday evening, then only picked up slightly. Started to get busy once we started packing up Sunday of course! 3 of us, 2 eyes in the slot, kept 6.

I've been on Red twice and both times been checked by (I believe)the same CO, both times he parked right his sled outside the house, knocked and we hollered to come in. He was very pleasent, asked his pertinent questions (only once), told us good luck and left.

Something to remember with all this warden talk is on URL is we have two local wardens yet we are often are checked by out of town wardens also; that tend to have a different approach. I was checked three time in one day last year. One guy was from the Duluth area then the second was from some place in southern MN and then the local warden stopped. I told him about the long arm of the law that day and he just shook his head.

Thur, Friday slow. Saturday pretty good. ice 33 inches in some spots. Hillmans road was in better shape than the regular highway roads. Light bite so if you see your flag run fast lol. We did get 4 Northerns around 36". Only 3 walleyes that we caught were in the slot, a lot of 13" We kept probaly 16 and 14 of them Saturday with 5 guys. Not the best, but have had worst. No crappies couple nice perch.

I'm headed up to Red on Fri. Morning to use one of Duffy's Ice House Sleepers. Anyone else been out of his ice houses? Also, anyone have a report on what they're biting on. From as far as I can tell, it's been a plain red hook with a fathead but what about the Northern? Thanks to those who apply!

Came back on Sunday from Upper Red and to say the least, it was hit and miss. On Friday night, we caught 2 fish, both on set lines. Jigging didnt produce at all. On Saturday we talked to Ryan and he plowed out a spot for us roughly 300 yards away. All night long we had fish. Once again, jigging didnt produce. A smaller pink/red glow jig with a smaller minnow outproduced everything. The bite was very light and there were a lot of fish we missed. Ended up with 3 guys keeping 9 on Saturday night. Many thanks to Ryans red lake rentals for putting us on a great spot. We will be back up this weekend for more.

Just got back yesterday from our trip up to Red. We fished with Scott from Red Lake Adventures. The fishing was sub par to what I expected. Between 3 guys we caught 14 fish in the matter of two days. we brought home 6. We fished Monday the 1st to Wednesday the 3rd. We didnt mark a fish all day Tuesday until about 430. Got two about sunset and nothing the rest of that night. Something shut them down, cause Scott said the day before they were picking up a few fish during the day and about 20 overnight. I am planning on being back in late February so we will see. Scott did a good job checking on us but hard to control the fish.

fishing has definately slowed again. was really fast and ferious for both crappies and eyes friday thru tuesday. i think the fact that it was a full moon and the moon was up from just before sunset to just before sunrise had something to do with it. hope to get back in a week or so anyways. will test this theory as it will be quite dark all nite. always seem to have best luck with full moon.

My dad and I just got back from staying in one of Kelly and Jonny P's sleepers. Fishing was fair to say the least, Most fish we graphed seemed to be in a somewhat negative mood. We fished from 1pm on Wednesday til about 8am today. Our totals were 30 walleyes, 1 30" pike and 1 small perch. Of the 30 eyes, 9 were keepers and only 1 was a slot fish. The rest were under 13". Didnt see a crappie. Afternoon hours seemed best and night time was pretty dead. Caught a few fish jigging, everything else on a plain hook or glow jig. Not a bad trip as we ate a meal on the lake and brought a few home as well. Thanks again Kelly for putting us on some fish and we'll probably see you again next year!

Fished the boundry today. From noon to 4:30 two of us caught a couple caught a and lost a couple. But from 4:30 on we iced another 13 walleyes. Then soon as the sun was completely gone it shut off. Glow 1/4 once jigheads with a fathead worked best. A few on spoons. Last week we were the only ones in this area. We are maybe a mile out in 13 fow. Lots of people were out near center bar now seems everyone moved back in a little. Bite has been fairly consistant, been fishing it 2 or 3 times a week since the middle of Dec. Seems like alot of dinks in the past 3 weeks. We caught only one 20 incher today.

Fished from fri night to sun noon. Slow bite, 8-9 miles out on Hillmans main road. We caught 8 between 7pm fri. and 2 pm Sat. Moved to angle road down about 3 miles on Sat. We caught 4 more. Dead stick did catch the most although the fish do seem to be alittle more aggressive than the previous trips. 5 out of 15 were caught with a spoon or darter. We only missed 3, we usually miss more do to the light bite. Good luck fellas

3 of us fished north end out of Hilmans road 2/5 to 2/7 out about 5-6 miles. Fished 14 FOW over gravel. Iced 12 all weekend 4 were keepers which we ate, 1 too big at 17 1/4, 7 were cigars and tossed back. Lots of small "lookers" on the Vex but not many takers. All of what we caught bit really light. Any resistance at all on the rattle reels or dead sticks and they dropped the bait. Moved hook from behind to in front of the dorsel fin on the minnows and had better success. Tip up worked pretty well when set to hardly any resistance on the flag. Best jigs were smaller white glow or red glow gem-in-eyes and gold weasils.

GLTA..

Two of us were out of Hillman's on Saturday evening from 5-9 pm and caught 5 walleyes, 1 over 17", others were less than 12" and 4 perch that were tossed back in the water. Missed a few and marked fish all night, there was no pattern but mostly caught on dead stick with red glow frostee and bigger sized crappie minnows.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
