Well first of all I would like to apologize to the lake for thinking I would get a little payback, nothing like putting houses down and getting them ready just to pick them up and move because of drifting. A bad bite I can understand, but a good bite and still having to go is just brutal.

The good news however is we where staffed for it and the move paid off. Just when I had about enough a couple of customers told me they have been coming up for 12 years and this was their best trip ever. Then I went over to our other groups and they were smiling and said fishing was great, suddenly the glass was half full again. After living like coyotes the last couple of days I was wondering what the !!!!.

I mean I was cooking up some grub and Dallas walked in and grabbed the can of beans I was going to cook and started chugging it like a beer. I said hey I was going to cook that and he said I don’t have time. Then I remembered I did say publicly it was time to give the lake a little payback. Been begging for forgiveness ever since.

Was up from the 27th to the 29th. Stayed with Pat Foster in a sleeper of his. Got set up and had great action all the way through the first night, slow during Mon. day and only two overnight fish on Mon night. Had me, the wife, and four kids with us caught 14 keeper fish and 12throw backs to big, 8 small ones and missed at least 20 fish (light bite). Red glow, red hooks, orange, yellow, they all worked. The best part of it all was watching the 2 ten year old girls reeling up fish and playing with the keepers. Thank god for the children they make our life interesting!!! Now off to LOW to try our luck staying at the Americinn so the kids can have their fun part of the vacation and i can have peace and quiet in the portable!!!

We just got back from staying at Portavilla on the 27th and 28th in their 6 man sleeper. We’ve been to numerous outfitters in the past, but Portavilla has been the best by far out of all of them. We very easily got our limit of 14 -16 Walleyes the first day with 7 + limits released, but the accommodations were EXCELLENT!! No one comes close. Their 6 man sleeper is very roomy, with plenty of lights, stove, fan, card tables, chairs, refrigerator, 8 nice bunks, holes didn’t freeze over, warm, alot of cabinet space, rattle wheels and very clean. Chris and Dallas are very friendly, treat you with respect, don’t just take your money and hear from them, they check in with you regularly. I never post things on the web because it’s typically been nothing great. This time I just can’t say enough good things. Put the word out, this is a GREAT place to stay.

Sounds like a good report,

Just a couple questions if you don't mind. A group of guys are headed up there thursday and was hoping to get on some fish. Wondering some information on where would be a good place to start. Which road did you go off and how deep were you fishing?

We went out of Hillmans. We were about three three and a half miles out in about 12.5 to 13 feet of water. The water clarity was real good for Red Lake, the camera worked well.

Looking for a fishing report from Hillmans heading up on 1/1/10. Just wondering what depth that has produced the most of the action.Bringing up my 2 daughters (10,12)and would like to keep things interesting for them and make life alot more enjoyable.

Fished out of Alpine Rental houses last night 12/28 and caught about 20 fish (11 keepers). Most were caught on a deadstick, plain hook (#4 or 6),shiner hooked through the back, and 4-8 inches off the bottom. Alpine uses Rogers access so we were on the south side of the lake.

Jerome has some very nice, clean, and comfortable houses plus he works to put you on fish.

13.5 to 15 feet of water. in the mud. We wre also doing good in as well on the sand but the houses drifed over so we pulled them.

Thanks guys, sometimes when things are going hard you wonder if what you’re trying to do is even being effective. When one gets feed back like that one can’t help but keep going full throttle.

Today we unleashed our new weapon, the big plow and man is it effective. It throws snow thirty to fifty feet, takes a minute to put on and thirty seconds to take off. I can hit a four foot high drift seventy five feet long and go through it like butter without even having chains on. The best part, I can cruse at thirty miles per hour and see with no problems.

Today we are taking down the flag, it’s going to Afghanistan to be flown over there and they are sending us one to be flown here. We look at it like those boys are defending are freedom and we are making the most of it. That’s why we do what we do, because we can.

Fishing slowed some today but the day is far from over.

Thanks for the report. How far out did Jerome have his set up? I'm heading up on Monday with another couple. Jerome is as honest as they come and alway treats us great. Looking forward to the wife catching some fish.

Probably a dumb question, especially since I was looking this up the other day...but your houses are on the south shore, right? whistle

Yes we are on the south shore.

Fishing is still slow with folks caching about 20 - 30 a day per house on the average.. We are looking for some new spots that may produce a little better; so far everyone has been pretty pleased so far. I just know that it can be better. Most house have been around 20.

Dead 5-10

Slow 10-20

Ok 20-30

Good 30-40

Fantastic 40 & up

First thing I have to say is WOW, each year we go up there and stay in Waskish Minnow Station's fish houses and I'm more impressed with each visit. I think it is hard to find a better operation on any lake. Kelly thanks for bringing my son and I more minnows out there, I thought 4 scoops of minnows would of been plenty enough for the two days...man was I wrong.

Monday within 30 minutes of getting into the house bobbers were going down and jigs were getting hit hard. We caught 25 walleyes from 13-16 inches by 9pm. Then we had a slow period only caught 3 walleyes the next 2 hrs, but then all heck broke loose from 1130pm - 3am we caught 25 walleyes ranging from 17-23 inches. My son was saying "really dad" every 10 minutes rattle reels were going off. Total for the first day was 50 plus walleyes.

Tuesday started off catching a couple of fish each hour during the daytime, allowing us to get some sleep. Then we hit a real slow time for about 2 hrs nothing???? I was wondering if we should of kept more of the fish from the previous day, but we still had the night bite yet. Then at 330pm my son had his pole lying down on the floor and the next time I looked over it was half way down the hole before he grabbed it...BIG PIKE. He battled the fish for 30 minutes before it came in view of the hole, my god its head was the size of a football. I reached down to get it and it did the famous head twist and that was it gone...So if anyone catches a pike with a glow red rattling varmit in his mouth thats the fish...But the memories of him fighting that fish will live on forever.

So for the two day total we caught 70 plus walleyes and bought back 8 nice 16 1/2 walleyes. Best bite was from 11pm-3am both nights, plain red hook and glow red gem-n-eye on the rattle reels, and glow red rattling varmits and lindy flying rattlers on the jig poles.

See again Feb 21-23, my son wont be they since he will back at college, but I will bring more cast of characters to experience the Red Lake magic. Again thanks for a great experience.

Well we are sitting here on red right now....seems to be no problem out of West wind with a 1/2 ton and wheeler house...people all over the place getting out. Got up here Tuesday bout 11am.....caught some fish...night bite was probably the busiest...I seemed to be the only one tending to the rattle reels and was VERY busy. Daytme bite was very slow...hoping tonight will be much better. Have no fear and come on up with your vehicle...ice is in great shape...strong 15 inches where we are at. Good luck all.

just returned from renting a portavilla 4-man shack for the first time.. very good night bite monday (20-30)on the rattle reels but shut off the rest of the next day and only got about 5 the next night.. "That's Fishin"

And one question.. If i have plans to bring a house for a weekend can we just stop in, pay the road fee and go?

The roads are very much appreciated for how much effort goes into preparing them for the season.

wow...you guys rocked the house! We had one of Kellys the next nite and it was actually pretty slow. Most of the fish were 14-15 inchs, and very soft biters. Thats fishing...

2 thumbs up to Waskish Minnow Station's operation though, we'll be back!

We've never fish'd Red Lake. Reserved two 4 man houses for the 22&23 thru Portavilla. What size generator should we bring or do we need to use one of yours? What type of lures and bait are usually used that time of year? Can't wait, it really sounds like a great time.

We fished red quit a few times in the crappie hey days.We used mostly crappie minnows then and once in a while fatheads.I would think now most guys go with fatheads since the walleye bite is better than the crappie bite. As far as baits boy the seem to bite good on many different lures kinda depends on there mood.We used to like northland glow jigs.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
