Sarah Saturday 09, The re-cap.

Recommended Posts

The weather was against us, the wind came up and tried to blow us all away, the rains came, it snowed........and a good time was had by all.

Right off in the morning, Pdog and Trouble showed up and started fishing. Shortly thereafter, a bunch of other fellas showed up and started fishing. I worked both landings, driving back and forth getting guys going on the lake. If I missed anyone I apologize, but I really tried to hook up with everyone at the landings and get them on the ice.

Regardless of the wind, we set up and started fishing.

Not everyone needed a shanty. Some of the fellas drilled holes, toughed it out, and played the run and gun game.

The thing about Sarah is it's shallow, and clear. The fish are skittish so we have to drill, set up, and wait. Do this the right way and things can work in your favor.

Back to base camp we went after icing a few nice fish. Once again, Mrs boilerguys chili was a big hit. Can someone say Chili Dogs?!?!?! Big huge thanks to her for cooking and keeping things in order at base camp.

After some really good chow we went to some of the spots we fished in the morning, and picked out a few new spots. Move around and fish and good things can happen again. Yup, there are nice walleyes in SW MN lakes.

Here's muc with a real monster. grin

When it was all said and done, some dandy perch were iced also.

UMDSportsman with a real dandy.

Even the event host managed to land a couple of keepers.

Pretty much everyone caught fish. I can't say everyone caught monsters, or anything worthy of taxidermy, but a good share of fish were iced today. We all met people, made a few friends, caught fish, ate chili.......heck, even my father in law showed up and caught fish ( I'm thinking he may actually want to bolt a blade onto his Jiffy). I'd say it was a good day despite what mother nature tried to throw at us.

Mrs boilerguy, Kennedylovesfishing, and the future Mrs UMDSportsman hung out in the perm house most of the day. I found some new fish house wall art, and that's pretty cool. They're probably a lot smarter than we are as Mother Nature was somewhat mean to us today. Big thanks, once again, to the gal crew for the chow and warm house when we needed it.

I'm still a little concerned about Riverrat and his Sarah Skunk. grin He said he caught a few but I didn't see them. Being a fisherman he may be inclined to stretch the truth just a tad. Did this actually happen? I don't know if we'll ever know. What I did learn today, however, is that if we're ever in a drought in July I'm taking the Riverrat fishing on Sarah. We've fished the lake together 4 times, and all 4 times it's rained. Twice in the winter. Not to knock the guy too badly, he did an excellent job finding questionable ice and eating chips. Also, he brought some of the best cookies I've had in a long time.

Fish were caught, friends were made, chili was eaten, good times were had by all. Now the end of the day comes, and the question is asked......can I make it up the landing?????

He made it!!!!

Good times.

I'll be at the perm house for a while in the morning. Definately not the place to fish. Yes, there are a TON of little dudes in that area, but nothing much bigger than 4 inch perch and the same size crappies. My perm house is straight out from the west side county park landing.

We iced most of the fish on the north side, a ways off the main point. If you go out there you will see at least one hole drilled in every snow drift. there are a couple perm houses in the area.

Caution, Riverrat and muc found some ice on the south side of the airators that should be avoided with vehicle traffic. No, they did not go swimming, but I've been told it's not thick enough to drive on.

No cookies or chili for this guy but that "Apple Pie" was good! grin

What no pics of the "Man Van" climbing the hill? The windshield wipers broke shortly after that making for a fun ride home!

Good time, o.k. fishing for me.

Nice fish Jeremy!! "I got 2"

It was a good time, nice to meet some of you guys. I made sure I took a shovel to check out the landing before i took a run at it. Wish I had a truck yesterday, but it all worked out, didn't get stuck. (Knock on wood) Saw all you guys laughing at me as i drove off the lake. Good timing with the pic. Luckily those guys cleaned out the landing yesterday with the 4 wheeler. Thanks guys, sorry i'm horrible with names.

I will be back out there sometime soon, the Sarah Skunk will not continue for much longer!

It was a great GTG, fishing wasn't outstanding, but consistent enough for everyone but me.

Nice to see everyone again and meet some new people and the chili was delicious!

Good recap Eric. Nice to see you all were able to catch fish and share some laughs. The food? Well, that's a no-brainer.

Thanks Eric for putting this together. The Chili was awesome anlong with the dogs. I finally caught a walleye on Sarah but a mounter it was not.

Bonus was I poped two roosters on the way home. The last two for the season for me.

I also caught a Sarah walleye but the downside was it measured a mere 8 inches.

It was good to see all that were there and boy Mucc, thanks for the apple pie. Good to see you to Kennedy.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
