Landdr, we are heading up for a weekend of fishing Alex area lakes. probably starting with Minnewaska early Saturday morning. I'm assuming the bait shop will be open for some shrimp and other delicious fish bait?!

glenn, you shouldn't have a problem. I just came off the lake a couple hours ago from that access and you can go anywhere. There are some rough areas where the slush has hardened, but there was no problem going around them and making a new path.

That is good to hear. I was out earlier, and the plowed roads are all messed up. Had to walk out to fish, truck would have gotten stuck.

AWESOME to hear. thanks.

Sniffer,

You walked out yesterday, Wednesday? Which landing were the plowed roads bad?

Posted

I have heard the roads are rough due to the frozen slush but other than that they are drivable...just take it easy. I went out this morning to set up renters and I though the roads were fine and did not see any slush. I am going to check the off-road snow a little later today to see what that looks like.

A guy dropped off a Frabill Speed Shak XL he wants to sell if anyone is interested. Looks brand new.

Has anyone been out in front of Glenwood public beach? Any word on sunnies biting in front of Lakeside?

I have been trying to fish out from the Sherif landing area, I wouldn't recommend going off trial. Lots of slushy areas yet. I can't get to any area I like to go. If you meet someone while on the trail, one of you has to back out to find an area to pass. Also have tried out from the beach, same issue, had to park the truck and pull my portable to get to the area I wanted to fish. Glad I don't have a house out on Minnewaska this year. Might be able to get around on top of the half frozen slush with a 4 wheeler. Right now not worth the risk for a couple walleyes. If you are brave enough to try bring a shovel and tow strap.

I sent a group out to School Bar Two this afternoon because they wanted some walleyes and maybe some sunfish during the day (in a little shallower). They called in and said the Sheriff Landing access and road was fine all the way out and had no problems. I would agree on meeting someone on a narrow road...someone is going to have to go around or back up...but all in all the travel on the lake is good.

I went out to Crappie Town this morning off the DNR Landing...solid roads all the way out and in good condition. No slush on the road or even along the road. Everything that I can see is frozen out there and no problems around the houses.

Had several groups that used the Sacs Landing road today and they said there were no problems...a little rough where the slush froze, but other than that it was good.

I am sure there can be some exceptions out there, but all in all it is good, ice is good and the fish are biting. I wouldn't have any concerns with having a house on Minnewaska this year...in fact I have three of them out. I have seen nothing but happy customers so far. smile

I was out on another lake I fish and it was bad. A few slushy areas. Waska is good but a little rough from the freeze up.

Anybody else have any info on the condition of the ice. There are mixed reportsd on the condition or slush on the ice. Was going to pull the house out tomorrow afternoon, but not if there is alot of slush on the lake. Thanks for the info.

Marlonb...I have checked most of the accesses and have people reporting back on lake conditions as they go out. DNR or Hunts access are all just fine...little bumpy due to the freezing slush but other than that these roads will take you right out to Crappie Town. Pretty good bite for sunnies, crappies, pike and some walleyes in that area. Roads out from Sack's Landing and Sheriff's Landing are also bumpy but frozen. No doubt you could find some slush out in untraveled areas but the more traveled areas are pretty froze up. I walked out on some open "untraveled" areas yesterday and those areas were froze up hard. I don't think an vehical would have an issue and definately not any issues with ATVs. I think you will do just fine and the fish have been pretty cooperative.

Little windy today!

Should be open around 7am. Wife will be covering from 10 to 11 as I have youth basketball to help coach...then back again. Not sure if I will get out fishing as my back slipped last Sunday while out fishing...too much bent over pulling slabs out of the hole! I am not getting any sympathy from my wife for some reason. smile

Still getting very good reports today on the panfish bite and lake conditions. I sent some folks out to some walleye spots but no report back yet.

Thanks for the update LANDDR. Going to try make it up tomorrow. Hopefully the wind will settle down some.

No problem.

Winds are supposed to go down over night and around 6mph mid morning with 2 to 4 thru the day. Sunday is also supposed to be really low winds. Looking like a great weekend on the ice! smile

Always calm and 65 in the fish house!

Hey kyle im working in the cities and would like to get out one of these weekends just wondering how much ice is out there? Can i drive anywere on the lake or is the slush a real issue?

Posted

Cities...what the bleep are you doing down there! Ha...definately a few fish back here that are happy you are down there! smile

15 to 17 inches of ice...maybe more but I haven't drilled any new holes for awhile since I haven't needed to move the houses. I have not seen any slush since it the temps got down really low after New Years. Might be some out there but I have not seen any and no one thru the store has reported any on the Glenwood end. I have heard of slush on the Starbuck end but best to check with that end of the lake if you are going that way. I will post any concerns if I see or hear of them.

"Drive anywhere"...anywhere there are roads, more traffic and hard cover...but you are on your own if you go exploring new areas. It's a big lake! smile The places you usually fish should be good to go. Stop in when you are back home. Sunnies and crappies are doing really well and finished off another jar of pickeled northern today. Jars are empty so time to replentish the stock.

What's the best time and place to catch crappies on Minnewaska now? Any suggestions? Time of day/night? Depth?

Posted

You can catch crappies on Waska during the day but the best bite is from around 5 until 8,9 or 10. I don't know how late they go as there have always still been crappies coming in when I leave.

16 to 17 fow.

Good luck!

Landdr, send me an email.

would like to head out fishing and do that "jake on the lake" show we have been talking about doing for a while.

Thanks Landrr.

No problem.

Jake...email sent.

Just got off the lake setting up a renter. Used the DNR access and it was in great shape. It has been plowed out and is relatively smooth. I also drove off the road to test the areas that were slush a couple weeks ago and those are also froze up...were actually more smooth than the road. smile Few drifts out in Crappie Town were houses have been but fairly easy to get around and set up. I wouldn't have any concerns bringing fish houses out.

Drilled some new holes...haven't done that in awhile. There is way more ice than there was before! I didn't measure it but I went past my 15 to 17 inch depth so I would guess there is 20 to 24 inches. I will measure it when I go back out. I actually drove my 1ton truck out this time.

I put the camera down just to see what was going on and there were sunnies swimming around. Adjacent houses were catching both sunnies and crappies already. Shrimp were working good. Should be a good bite today...really nice out on the lake.

Landr, are all the roads decent? i'm comin up tomorrow to do some away from the crowd type of fishing, and possibly get shrimp from you if you open early enough..lol. Wanna try scouting a bit to see if I can find a few bigger fish

Posted

TJ...roads are fine...you shouldn't have any problems.

Definately a slower bite tonight. The fish were there...just not cooperating. I did not get out until late and so I just started on crappies around 5:30 or so. Ended up with a half dozen but marked A LOT of fish. I could get them to chase but just wouldn't commit. That's fish'in. Someone comments on the high pressure being a possible issue.

Beautiful day on the lake today and tomorrow is supposed to be nice as well.

Went out all day today. It was depressing. Didn't mark much. Moved around some. Fished 8am~7PM. Few crappies few dink sunnies. a lot of 2in perch. really cold. Someone parked on my friends clam. Actually on the snow flap of the clam. How rude.

Walleyes are mainly a night bite every time we’re here.  First flash bite is 5-6pm then a lull until 9 or 10pm.  Sometimes quiet and sometimes busy all night to the point of pulling lines in the wee hours of the morning so you can sleep a little.  Then, 95% done by 9am.  You hope to get some perch later morning and early afternoon.  That’s WITHOUT moving.  A person can improve by getting more mobile of course.   We don’t spend much time at the lodge but my wife will have a drink while I clean fish.  I think the bloodies are still a thing for most from how many get ordered.  She said she’s not a fan but she’s particular about her bloodies.   It gets to be a busy place!  Seems like it would fun to hang out if fishing wasn’t staring me in the face!   We usually don’t have an issue getting our walleye limit with bonus jumbos, pout and pike.  We’ve seen all that so far in 24 hours but slower than we’re used to and most of our walleyes are either too small to keep or in the 18-23 protected slot.  About equal numbers that way.  But we can’t get to our best spot due to a crack so I don’t know if we could be doing better or not.  Marking fish but today they seemed spooky.  I’m not the only one who commented on that either.  Turn off the lights, and keep your noise down.

Hopefully everyone is doing well.  I haven't had a whole lot of free time this winter... Between house projects and work projects I have been plenty busy.  Have managed to get out a few times this winter now. Ice conditions are definitely better than last winter.  Finding 12-15 on the lakes I have been on around home.   Fishing has been very good on some local lakes and pretty quiet on others.  The body of water I was on yesterday, we found fish hanging on a deep portion of a back bay.

Just getting settled down now.  The kid and her family plus a buddy and his family came with.  Had to get everyone set up and get a couple pizzas into em.   19 inches of ice.  We drove till we came to crack that had softer ice about 13 inches.  Veered off and spread out on some structure.  One little walleye so far.  One missed.  Half dozen marked.   Good crust of snow about 2-3 inches on the east side.  Getting out toward the main body of water the snow patches and bare ice are about 50/50.  We have about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of snow here.  I’m able to move around without cleats for the set up but need to pay attention.  I’d be comfortable by myself but I’m still used to falling down, so… 😉
