Anyone fishin' Grove Lake? Heard rumors...

Posted

was out on waska and it was 6 inch gill after 6 inch gill..

its funny how you hear a lot of talk on this site but no pics

terrible fisherman you will have to let me know exactly where those bass were caught, I know a couple guys that would LOVE to do the lake a favor

Posted

It is probrably because there are people like yourself that will just criticize what people take from the lake. To avoid all that people would rather not post pictures. We could go on and on about this, but I would rather prefer to read about fishing reports. Better luck fishing next time out!

They were catching them on the drop from the sandbar to the hole in front of the high school. I don't think you can keep them in the winter though since it was all smallies they were pulling up from what they told me

Fishduck...sorry I missed your post. I was already out fishing and not by a computer...and then we headed out to Monster Jam with the boys early AM the next morning. Back VERY late last night. It rained most of Friday night and I would say there was 2 to 4 inches of water/slush on the lake the next morning. It was certainly messy. Nice freeze coming starting Monday and thru the week so that should firm everything up. It will be rougher in some spots once it freezes however.

Wetline...I have heard the smaller sunfish are getting more aggressive and the bigger ones hang back. People putting cameras down are seeing the same thing. I believe once the food sources are eaten down, the panfish should get more aggressive.

Yes...small mouth can not be kept at this time of the year. The smaller large mouth are excellent to eat from Waska...I usually keep them up to a couple pounds. Large mouth are hanging out with the panfish and I see a lot of them along the weed lines as well. I have a house in 13.5 ft. and we see bass every few minutes on the camera.

Marlonb has a very good point. I have said this before...people that come in to the store often comment that they read the forums but will rarely post anything due to the backlash they see others receive when they post. I would post photos...but I don't know how to. I tried learning last week and I think I am getting it down now. I will give it a try...here are the walleyes I caught last Sunday (see if this works)...

walleyes%201.17.10.jpg

Friday night we only caught two smaller walleyes...but a friend of mine set up about 300 yrds away and got 5 eyes and his dad got 2.

It looks like you have the picture thing down already smile

I would like to say that i have given up on Waska for awhile, 16 hrs of fishing and no food for me to eat. I really hope the sunnies start to bite soon, my wife won't go out anymore!!!

Posted

I was out on Waska this last weekend and didn't catch a thing. I am thinking about going up north to see if they are biting.

Posted

What kind of rumors did you hear about Grove Lake? Crappies,Sunnies or Northerens?

Posted

lakers11---I heard crappies.

Posted

I don't know...some people that come in are having no problem catching nice gills on Waska...and then others can't get anything. Certainly a lot of fish down there when you put the camera down. I haven't been after panfish lately so I can't give any personal information. Go with small jigs and small bait.

Lake conditions are good even after the rain...everything has frozen up again with the cold temps. Might be some rough spots but for the most part not a problem getting around.

me and my dad have a 24hr guided trip certificate he got off some auction on the radio.

it expires on february 12th.

we are thinking of using it this weekend. how is the fishing?

Posted

Hummm...who is the certificate offered by?

Posted

is there a good spot to fish pan fish and some walleye planing a overnighter this weekend

Posted

Did I hear correctly that it's winterama this weekend in Glenwood? Lots of activities on the ice around the glenwood side if that's the case.

Posted

landdr what time do you open on sat I need to stop and get a good starting point plus the hot bait for the day

Posted

Hummm...who is the certificate offered by?

i cant remember.

Posted

Landdr i was thinking of taking my 4 year old son fishing tomorrow and was wondering if you could point me in the rite direction for some panfish or northerns. the size dont matter at all just hope to catch some. thanks

Posted

Hey Landdr, they still getting a few eyes out in waska? Also anyone fishin out on Amelia, villard or leven doing any good?

Posted

Fished just east of Priest Point Sat. from 10am-7:30pm. Never caught a fish. Lost 1 small pike at the hole. Could easily see the bottom in 15 feet of water and only saw a few tiny perch.Still had fun though.

Posted

With the full moon just taking place i would think that some walleyes would be biting at night... especially with the fairly stable weather, i know i will be out trying even though i swore to give up on waska!!

Sorry guys...I was out of town late last week and thru the weekend at a sport show in Rochester. For some reason the computer at the hotel would not let me on the site to give updates or answer questions. It was a good show however and I gave daily seminars on "Small Property Management for Whitetails". It is a really good seminar and will get you thinking about your property or where you hunt...I will be giving this seminar at the Deer Classic in March as well if you want to stop by. I will also be at the NW Sport Show in March but not giving seminars at that event...just a booth.

Updates...I am just getting back into the swing of things but from what I have heard so far is that if you work around you will get your sunfish...and nice sized. There is a good sunfish bite out from Lakeside now and one fella reported back that he had his limit of nice fish by 1 pm on Sat. in 14 to 16 fow.

As with all lakes in the area, and maybe the state, the late algae and zooplankton has provided a lot of late season food sources for the panfish in deeper water...probably the same thing going on with Reno. We are hoping this food source will be eaten down soon and the fish will get more active and even more into the weedlines searching for new food. Time will tell.

I will have to check with more people on the walleye bite. The core group that I fish with said they "seen" a lot of walleyes but could not get them to bite. Like I have mentioned before, the walleyes that we catch have a lot of "bait" in the bellies and often bait that was dead and most likely scavenged off the bottom. For example, my last walleye had 8 fathead "heads" and two tails in it. That could only mean it was picking thrown away heads and tails from people jigging. Kinda like Noonan's Park in Alexandria...the ducks there don't need to fly out to feed in the fields or ponds when they can just wait around and get full when people throw them food. smile

Jake...was that certificate from me for Waska? I did give some certificates out to organizations for fundraisers so just checking. Take a look at the certificate and let me know if it is one of mine.

Hunterjames...how did you and the boy do?

Teach'n'fish...I agree and I will be putting in some time on the lake as well. I love sleep'n on the lake...best sleep ever...so I will probably do an overnighter or two. Let me know how you do and I will do the same.

I don't have a vexlar or camera, and was just wondering if anyone had any suggestions on where to start. I have no problem on drilling holes and setting up a few tip ups in trying to find them. I would just appreciate an educated guess on the depth and area of where to start. I fished away from Crappie Town in about 16 fow a few weekends back and had little luck. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks for all the information that everyone places on this forum.

landdr, i stopped at ur shop on saturday and you werent there! i was gonna have my dad talk to you about burning the CRP.

the cerficate was for hunts resort. we bought some eurolarvea from ur shop, and almost every single one had cocooned it self and was useless.... just letting you know

the fishing will almost nill, landed 2 pike and 2 perch between my day, mybrother and i. sadly, every fish was landed by me.

a small pike came in and was checking out my splitshot. so i slowly raised my jig until it could see the waxworm wiggling, suprisingly it took it.

then i put on a TINY 1" crappie minnow i got from your shop, and i let my rod sit, looked down the hole a while later, and a a nice pike was looking at it! i picked up my rod just as it hit! if i wouldnt have looked down the hole when i did, i would be short a rod for sure!!!

the pike was only about 4lbs, but a blast on 2lb test!

Sorry I missed you and your dad...would have been great to see your dad again and talk about the burn. If he wants, I can give him a call as well. I was out of town at the Rochester Sport Show and did not get back til late Sunday night.

Euro...I hate to hear that. Next time you are in I will take care of that. I know the week prior, with all the rain, there was not as much fishing so the bait got carried over...but I told them to clean out all the cocoons and make two containers into one. Wheels fell off when the boss was away. frown

Nice pike on light line! They are fun.

It seems the panfish bite is starting to pick up a little. My prediction was that the forage in the lake would slowly get eaten down until the fish get more hungry...that usually happens in January but this year is a month behind due to the cold August and warmer September. Sounds like a pretty good bite out from Lakeside in 14 to 16 fow. Weekend weather looks to be really nice so hopefully will have some more aggressive panfish.

Thanks for the post and catch ya next time!

Nice photos...but even better video! That is pretty cool. Let's do a pheasant hunt and/or dear hunt next year for sure. You can come out look at the 30 to 40 does and 5 to 7 bucks...I will take the camer as you harvest one. smile Great editing and music selection.

How about a day out soon to video some of the walleyes that come in and if we can hook into a few? That would be great video as well.

Hey...there is the "Ice Fishing Get Together" this weekend as well on Saturday...Advanced Tackle Innovations and the Jaw Breaker Jig are sponsoring it...registration starts around 9 or 10 am at Fish On...you should bring the camera and video down for that event...and fish in it of course. I think there will be some great pics and video opps. I think there is $50 for the biggest fish as well as other prizes too. Just a lot of fun and the weather looks great. I have some cocooned euro for you as well...got em set aside just for you. smile

Thanks again Jake for the great photos and video.

Let me know if you are coming down. Registration starts at 9am. Get you signed up and give you some spots to head out to. Great to get some video of some guys coming in to register, etc. to add to the character of the piece.

I have to coach 1st grade basketball at 10:30 and then back again...Daddy Fish On will be covering.

I would expect some descent pike during the day but there are walleyes during the day in the area I would recommend you to go...but the bit picks up @ 3 and prime time is 5 to 7pm...but fish can be caught until 9 or 10pm.

Keep me posted.

Caught a muskie yesterday about 4:30 yesterday..shiner and hook in 13 fow on the Glenwood end. I saw it on the camera and it attacked the minnow from 8-10 feet away. fun to watch.

Hopefully everyone is doing well.  I haven't had a whole lot of free time this winter... Between house projects and work projects I have been plenty busy.  Have managed to get out a few times this winter now. Ice conditions are definitely better than last winter.  Finding 12-15 on the lakes I have been on around home.   Fishing has been very good on some local lakes and pretty quiet on others.  The body of water I was on yesterday, we found fish hanging on a deep portion of a back bay.

👍 i knew that..just razzin him!!!!   thanks for the update.

Just getting settled down now.  The kid and her family plus a buddy and his family came with.  Had to get everyone set up and get a couple pizzas into em.   19 inches of ice.  We drove till we came to crack that had softer ice about 13 inches.  Veered off and spread out on some structure.  One little walleye so far.  One missed.  Half dozen marked.   Good crust of snow about 2-3 inches on the east side.  Getting out toward the main body of water the snow patches and bare ice are about 50/50.  We have about 1/2 - 3/4 inch of snow here.  I’m able to move around without cleats for the set up but need to pay attention.  I’d be comfortable by myself but I’m still used to falling down, so… 😉

Think it was work today, off tomorrow.  Still has to load up and drive up after work?

It's turning into a great ice year. We just need the snow now!
