Buffalo Lake Fishing Reports

Recommended Posts

I think if truck loads of small gravel rock were poured, on to the ice in late winter over the shallow humps, in the spring this could maybe make more spawning grounds for walleyes.

That would be a great idea, but isn't it illegal because of altering the lake??

All lake alteration have to go through the DNR. Anyway if they do it who do they need to go to for approval.

BradT that thing is awesome....does it get up to a decent speed?? Maybe you could put a nitris kit on it! No matter what it has to beat walking.

It's a 19 horse, It only goes about 8mph, but it has lots of power to spare. I might have to change some pullies this summer, I'd like to get about 15mph if I can.

I was out on Buffalo Saturday afternoon (roughly 3pm) til 8pm last night. It was very dead. The fish were there, but had absolutely no interest. Had 3 between the two of us, and that was no easy accomplishment. Was curious if others had any success or not. I will say that when I got out and scooped up some crappie minnows to use... they were bigger than what I normally like to use. Always seemed that the smaller the minnow the better the success for me in the past weeks. The weather was pretty nice with virtually no wind. Maybe tonite would be better before the next snow storm (if the weather reporters can actually get it right).

Buffalo will more than likely be fairly slow for the remainder of the season, its just gotten to be that time of year and that pressure the lake is getting is no help either.

We had pretty much the same exact thing going on. 5 between a buddy and myself and we had to work hard for them. Marked them all night, lots of lookers very few takers.

With the large amount of people on the lake last night, the fish got confused and did not know what they wanted to eat.

Was out on Buffalo last nite with my 4 yr old son caught 6 crappies between the 2 of us in an hour lost an additional 6-8. Gotta love the excitement your ice fishing experience becomes in your portable when you have a 4 yr old with you. Was out this morning in 2 different spots from 630am 9am caught and released 5 more 10 inchers by myself. I agree fishing has slowed down out there, but there's plenty of aggressive crappies out there away from the groups!!! and a little shallower water.

Saturday was the radar run I got there late in the day. Lots of sleds running, the top speed I hear of was 132 mph. Talk about wind chill. I decided to take this weekend off from fishing, too many people, help time to find new ice. Brad I was thinking of making a 3 wheeler, Go kart type rig for fishing. Maybe next fall.

Does Buffalo Lake even exist anymore?? Talk about going from Hot to Not!! Looks like a ghost town out there now. Whatever fish are left in there probably have an IQ of 180.......

was out there on friday, plenty of proof of how packed it was out there by the piles of trash everywhere though. Went out of the boat launch by the park, ice was looking a little iffy by the launch(most of the ice was fine but you could tell a spot where someone had broken through that first layer of about a foot or so) Anyone know if you can access the lake by any of the other 2 boat launches. (either the small dirt one by the park, or the other main one across the lake? Still have my house out there and hitting it one more time this weekend.

thanks

I'm back!! Was out catching too many fish the past 30 days and no time to post!!

The signs might be some old ones from when the guy with the big plow went for a swim earlier in the year.

The thin ice warnings are there because a couple people dropped their fronts ends in right on shore. Where the concrete part of the access is, people would take it too fast and the ice bacame worn out. Nothing to worry about. Move over about 5 yds and your good.

On an off light precipitation today. Hoping the weather this weekend will be nice so I can get out and crappie fish and check the weather. My yard has standing water and the driveway is a mess. Lot of lakes are near standard water levels which is good. Heard they are done stripping eggs on cut foot. Shaping up to be a good opener. Last year fished open water 60+ days and 28 different lakes. Hopefully bump both those numbers up this year

I don't think its 100% accurate, you are just relying on other average joes to report precipitation. But I think most numbers there are right in the ball park, especially when you see consistency among multiple reports in a general area.   It's probably more accurate than what the weather terrorists say on the news  which usually only reports metro areas. cocorahs is good for getting rural area reports you just might not have as many reports to go off of

Thanks Mike.  I've been looking at bags of it for years but never wanted to chance wasting good meat on it.  I have a gas and charcoal grills, but really love the flavor of charcoal over gas. Most of the time it's if we have time to use one or the other.

On the south end...   The big open water, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  The bays and tributaries of LOW such as Zippel Bay, Bostic Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  The lake is in good shape for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. The many bays and backwaters of the lake have been receiving attention from spring pike anglers.  Some pike have already entered the bays, spawned and gone back out to the lake, but there are still a pile of fish to be had.   The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Another great week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  The bite has been very good and lots of fish of all sizes are being boated.     Sturgeon are being caught from Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River all the way to Birchdale, about 42 miles.  There are many boat ramps along the river to make life easy.  Starting from the east going west...   -Nelson Park at Birchdale (About 30 miles east of Baudette) -Frontier (9 miles west of Birchdale) -Vidas (Near Clementson Rapids) -Timbermill Park (East Baudette) -Peace Park (International Drive, Baudette) -Wheeler's Point (mouth of Rainy River)  The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Up at the NW Angle...  The Angle is ice free.  Resorts are gearing up for the fishing opener which is expected to be excellent.  The late ice bite was very good and the walleyes are in good numbers amongst the islands area of the NW Angle.
