I know what you mean I have caught alot of crappies myself. I only keep 7-8 fish each time out. I could easily keep a 10fish limit, but then 7 could be my limit. They have been some good eating. I fish all around the lake, every body sits in one spot but if you travel around I have caught some real nice fish away from the pack of houses. I fished a different lake, hit the gravel area, caught several sunfish all over 9 inchs.

You guys did better than me. I was out last night near the courthouse and could only manage a hand full of fish. Definitely not all over 10 or 11 like slugger.

I think he is the only one with limits of 11+ inchers out of buffalo!

With 500 people on the lake tonight....its really no surprise not everyone is catching fish. There will always be some that do but thats alot of pressure out there. I pulled up to the lake at around 4:00 and drove away laughing.

Last year someone explained the 4 steps on how to measure a true limit of 11 inch "Buffalo Crappies"

1st..Push the mouth together and bump the nose to a wall or board.

2nd... Pinch the tail

3rd.. Do NOT measure the fish with a old tape that is missing the first 2 inches.

4th.. Most important.. Have someone else measure them for you.

LOL!

I went out again today from 3 am to 7pm for kicks with my dad and neighbor for fun and not keeps

Morning was really slow only about 15 fish around 10 in bit started at around 7:15ish

All day long only 2 perch (good thing for tv)

The the 3:30 pm hour came all I can say is WOW. I alone caught around 30 fish. Dad and neighbor around 20. It died off slowly at 5:30

It was a long day but well worth the excitement

There's a certain combination of bait and lure they can not resist. They just come up hand hammer it as soon as it gets down there. I was really surprised how aggressive they were even with this weather.

Oh and Vex Guy...I have a 11 in stick and they all were as long or longer last night than it.

Bigslugger, You must have some steroids in that special combination that makes them grow an extra inch or 2 as they're coming up the hole!

Our family has been fishing the lake for almost 30 years doing our at times 40-50 fish nights, like you're experiencing, and we've never able to locate those elusive 11" fish limits!!

I think that 11" stick might have a broken tip! grin

I swear on my life they were 11 inches or more.

Bassislife quick question. What's with the really light coloring on the crappies in Buffalo. They look extremely pale, like they are sick or something

That could be some of that Barry Bonds Steriod Bait they have been eating!

hehe! grin

Just keep having fun catching all those 11" plus, I'll have to settle for those smaller 9-10 inchers like the other 500 people out there.

Slugger, have you been going back to the exact same spot day after day or have you been moving up and down the 20 foot break?

They probably are sick...like I said in an erlier post take a walk along the lake in the summer time and look at the shoreline full of hundreds of dead rotting fish. Its not exactly one of the cleaner, healthier lakes in the area. In fact its rather disgusting. Fish seem to taste fine though!

I've been moving around the lake, but keeping in that 20' range and have had fair luck with both jigin and dead stick. Mostly crappies but a few eater walters 14" to 16". The 3:00 to 7:00pm

seems to be the "Hot" time. The glow lures are the ticket for me.

If you see them on the vex and they swim by, bring it up and zap

it with a lite, drop it back down and they come back. I'll be out tonight with the radio tune in on the Game...Go VIKES!!!

Did anyone see that big article in the newest Outdoor News about Buffalo Lake??? The guy told where to fish, when to fish, and even how deep to find them at different times of the day. Just what we need for that lake, more pressure.

Noodledoodle,

"If you only had a brain" If you were not so loud down there on that early ice you boys could have caught a few more fish yourself!!

Not many people know about that bite, so keep it off the air!

FYI.. They're still hitting!!

By the way....What in the world are you trying to say in your own language anyway??

PS: read up before you begin to slam!! We caught 10-12 eyes per night , not by the hour! Like I said.. We were quiet!!

I also saw Carney's report. Must have ran out of bullets and arrows. If it walks, crawls or flies it dies. He needed something easy to write about. What easier then fishing crappies, notice he didn't write on how to catch walleyes.

I also want to thank the guy that finished drilling holes for me. Power auger ran out of gas, a first for me.

At this point I think we are long past worrying about pressure on Buffalo Lake. Not exactly a big secret. You could build a grocery store and a mcdonalds out there and they would thrive.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
