Sounds like you have the "disease" too. smile

It is very addicting. One thing just leads to another. Very satifying shooting critters/targets with your own roll.

Hey there WG. How have you been? Do you have all those guns shooting straight? It was an awful summer here. Had the boat off the lift once and never did get up to Elbow Lake to shoot. Made it over to Morris a few times but not as much as I wanted. My wife had some health issues and ended up haveing surgery so I stayed close to hpme. She is on the mend now that the weather is getting cold.

WG and Waska, I have only been reloading for a couple years but I do love it, especially the finding what works for each gun and what the magic recipie is. Not sure if we will get a seperate forum but feel free to add posts and questions in this forum. I think there are more of us reloaders out there.....

Glad to hear she is on the mend. Hadn't heard from you in awhile and wondered what was up.

Guns are shooting good. The driver is a little off kilter though. smile Had a pretty good season which ended on a good note. Have to send you a pic of my last target sometime.

Had Bertskie stop in this morning. Looking for barrels and was heading north to talk to the master.

Pigs:

Lets keep pulling/promoting for its own category as I think you are correct. More "roll yur own" guys out here and guys that are curious and want to learn more and get into the hobby/sport. There are other websites that address this but why not here too? Seems a good fit.

I agree WG, but I would like to keep it a little low key, I too have been on some of those other sites and there gets to be a hoity toity mentality at some of those sites. I have stopped posting on a site because the moderator was always quick to be judgmental and jump down peoples throats if they didn't agree with his views....

Posted

WG, What is Bert thinking of this time around? I am not happy with my old 788 Rem. .223 so I am thinking of a .223AI. More than likely go the Savage route again. If I sold insurance I would be more apt to look at Remington, but....... wink I would be more excited if I didn't have more work to do on the 6BR!!! We will have to post some pictures from time to time and see if we can drum up some excitement here on FM. More to come!!!!!

please do and start new posts, not just add on to this one please

Waska:

BV is thinking of a BR chambering again plus a used PPC barrel as well just for shooting critters with his PPC so he doesn't use up his good one. I understand John is having BV chamber a 6BRX and actually has the reamer and barrel already. He might be considering the LR league for the first time in 2010?

A .223AI? With that short action I would consider going the .204 route or if you don't wish to purchase new .204 brass going with a 20 Tactical and your old .223 brass will work. My next varmint exterminator will be one of those two choices.

Picks:

Yeh, some of those sites are not worth visiting but on the other hand some do an excellent job in keeping it open and informative. Let's see what develops.....

Thanks,

WG

okay, so you guys start by making this conversation between you a post in the regular forum, that will spark interest since this was a general how to post and you two definitely have knowledge. I wished I was not in the metro and could get more trigger time in. I have an ar-15 that is amazing and a 243 savage that is truly more accurate than I have been able to prove.

I am working on it.... Give me a little bit of time and will get something going. Have to go shoot some roosters first and then will get back here later.

Say, what you have there in your avatar?

For quite a few years I've thought about getting into reloading, mainly so I can get out and shoot more, other than just 22's. This definitely has me thinking about it pretty hard.

I'd mainly just be reloading .308, .30-06, and .222

Sure, rub it in that you are out hunting while I am working....

that is my Remington 870 express with the Boyd's thumbhole stock from Cabela's. It has the rifled slug barrel on it with open sights. I shoots 3" or better groups at 100 yards off the lead sled. After buying my AR-15, I fell in love with the idea of thumbhole stocks, it is a more comfortable hold for me, but it does add weight to the gun

Working on a friends .222 now. Have 6 recipes ready to try at the range when I get a chance.

Nice idea with the stock choice on your Rem. Thought you would like to know that I am still chasing roosters.:) Nice weather but muddy here in SC SD.

try posting this as it's own thread, you will get more responses, I don't currently load for 7mm-08

Like picks said start a new thread so as to not get buried here.

I have a friend with a 7-08 and have some reloading data for it.

I am gone for a few days fishing though so I won't be able to get to the data until next week at this point. Will be happy to get you what I have then.

picksbigwagon, Nice post! You have studied well. I started in the '70's with 20 & 12 gauge shotgun loading, I started metallic cartridge reloading (mostly handgun, some rifle) in '87. Calibers I load are .32 short, long and Magnum, 9mm, .38 special, .357, .44 mag, .45 Long Colt, .454 Casull & .480 Ruger, in handguns and .243,.308, in rifle. I agree that it's one of those 'hobbies' that you can/ should really get lost in just due to the concentration involved. It's odd how +/- .2gr powder can change your groupings, but it does! Again, Nice Post, Keep yer powder dry grin! Phred52

Worked up some recipes on a friends Savage .223 recently:

Here is my reloading center.

hunting.jpg

Group of what he had been using for factory rounds; Don't be checking my math here as I was rounding that day. smile

100_3467.jpg

Group using my .223 load for my Remington.

100_3468.jpg

Group using my brothers .223 load for his Remington.

100_3469.jpg

Went to less than half without hardly any effort at all. Will tweak the load a little to try and squeeze just a tad bit more out of her if I can. Need to do some measuring and possibly try some seating depth changes and some very small changes in powder charge.

Shoot straight,

WG

Regarding the 7/08. An easy powder to work with is WW748 with WLR primers. That combination gives good performance and normally very good accuracy.

For the 308, have shot more of these than I would ever want to try and count. Lots of good powders work well in it as it is very flexible...WW748, IMR4895, IMR4320, IMR4064, Benchmark, Varget, R15, N135, N140, N150, N540, etc. Best bullet ranges are between 150-180 for most purposes. Have used these in barrels ranging from 18-32" and twist rates from 10-13.5" with bores of .3065" to .3080" to good effect. It's a cartridge that is very hard to find a combination that won't work.

pbw, how do you like your case trimmer? I have looked at those, and also have been eyeballin hornady's case prep center for a future investment... how abut the powder measure/scale? Is it pretty much nuts on accurate or do you still need to watch it and tweek your loads by hand?

Is there a big advantage to the auto charge scales or are they a waste of money? Big C has one on sale right now, and I am thinking of getting one... I like to measure out each load, but I am working on prepping 1500 pcs of 223 brass to load up, and also am looking into reloading a pile up for a few different handguns in the future... so looking at doing a lot of rounds, but still want to maintain the consistency, but don't want to waste my money on things thats don't work, (i bought a case prep assistent) and i don't thinkit saves a lot of time, but makes it easier one the ol fingers....

Thoughts are appreciated

Posted

I started reloading using a Lyman 55 powder measure. I now use an RCBS 1500 Chargemaster and would never go back. It is slower than the 55 but I seat the bullet while the next charge is being thrown.

Posted

+1...... I used to hand measure out my loads but now with the charge master, I get consistent weight measurement and seat the bullet while the next load is being measured.....

Posted

For handguns I use a powder drop on my Dillon 550B. For rifle I use the RCBS electric powder scale and then hand drop each load into the casing.

Posted

right now the Hornady auto charge is on sale for 199 at the big C store... Which is about 50 bucks less than RCBS's charge master... both seam to have the same accuracy etc... Just thinkin maybe its a decent idea...

Posted

I would go for it........it is a big time saver and it is definitely a great way to reload

Posted

I probably will get it ordered up here... still working through prepping all the once fired 223 brass i bought... Yi yi yi it takes a while to do it right! But I am still enjoying it, and its relaxing...

That’s one worth adding to the resort archives!   Yeah, I’ve seen several places closing their accesses in the past week.  We got out last Saturday night in our old house - my friend I sold it to let us use it - but I think we’re done?

Those are some nice lakers. Admittedly, I just hit BWCA lakes in the spring when they come up shallow - so I cheat!   I fished LOW two weeks ago and caught a good sized pike on an airplane jig. It swam around and collected one of my buddy's lines and then slipped the hook on the hole's edge as well. The fish that get away are always the ones to remember.

Highbanks just posted thos on book of faces.  Said there access is closed for the season.

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing remains strong on Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters continuing to offer both day houses and sleeper fish houses. The bite has been good in most areas, and ice conditions are among the best in recent years.    Some ice roads now extend more than 20 miles out, with resorts and outfitters working hard keeping anglers on schools of walleyes and saugers. With nearly 40 inches of ice in many areas, auger extensions are necessary for those fishing on their own. The March forecast predicts daytime temperatures above freezing and overnight lows below freezing, helping to maintain solid ice conditions through the month.  Resort guides and outfitters are on the ice daily monitoring conditions where they travel and fish. Anglers are sorting through smaller fish but are consistently catching limits of walleyes and saugers, along with jumbo perch, eelpout, pike, tullibees, and even a few crappies. The one-two punch of jigging and deadsticking remains the most effective technique. Jigging spoons with rattles, lipless crankbaits, and jigging rap-style lures are producing well, while deadsticks with a live minnow a foot off the bottom are catching less aggressive fish. March is prime time for trophy northern pike, with tip-up fishing proving to be highly productive. It was a great week for big pike and should only get better through March and into April. On the Rainy River...  As it has been most of the winter, walleye fishing has been best in the mornings and evenings using jigs and minnows. Sturgeon fishing has been solid, with some large fish being caught. Anglers should check with resorts before heading out, as ice conditions on the river can change quickly due to current and runoff during the day. Up at the Northwest Angle...  Fishing remains very good. Resorts continue to move fish houses to keep guests on active schools of walleyes, saugers, perch, and pike. Big crappies are still being caught just over the border in Canada, and those interested should check with resorts for the latest conditions and guide services. Lake of the Woods being border water with Canada has an extended ice fishing season, with fish houses allowed on the ice through March 31st.  In addition, the walleye and sauger season is open through April 14th. Pike fishing never closes, and perch and crappie remain open year-round as well. Whether booking a day house rental, sleeper fish house, or resort stay, there is still plenty of time to plan a late-season ice fishing adventure.

Van Vac can be a tough hill to travel on.  I parked in the upper parking lot in 2014 and went out fishing in a snow storm.  I think we got about 10 inches of snow that day and they didn't plow at all.  There was no way my front wheel drive caravan was going to make it up the upper hill so I spent the night in my van.  I had prepared for that possibility so I was quite comfortable in the 0ºF night (just started the van up once during the night to heat it up.  I went out fishing again the next day and when I came back they still hadn't plowed the road to the parking lot (late March).  So I towed my snowmobile trailer to the top of the hill with my snowmobile.  Then I made a circular path in the parking lot so I could build up my van speed to go up the hill.  I think it was about 15 attempts to go up the hill before I finally made it to the top.  What an experience.

Burntside Lake is a beautiful lake and very convenient to get to.  I started fishing it in 2010 when it got to difficult for me to travel into the BWCA while I lived in the twin cities.  I averaged 1 laker/day up to 2018 when my success started to decline.  That was also when I quit going out on snowmobile and just walked to fishing spots.  That probably also contributed to my decline.  My average the last 3 years has been 0.4 lakers/day.  Now that I live in northern Minnesota I think I will travel into the BWCA more for lakers.   My longest Burntside laker was the skinny 33 incher shown in the 1st picture (2020).  This fish weighed only 7#-15oz, and I think it was at the end of its life.  My biggest BWCA laker was 34 inches and weighed 13#-3oz (2nd picture from 2008).  I also caught an 11 pounder in the BWCA in 1999 (3rd picture).   My goal is to someday catch a 20 pounder.  I had one up to the bottom of the hole once that I think was over 20 pounds.  I was jigging a large airplane jig near the bottom when I thought I snagged the rocks.  When I was able to finally move the fish I knew I had a huge one.  I saw its head at the bottom of my 7-inch hole and had a hard time getting it started into the hole.  I reached for the gaff hook but the jig caught on the bottom of the hole and the fish was gone.  Ever since then, I chisel the bottom of my holes to guide the laker's head into the hole.

Quite a bit a matter of convenience but it was pretty good in the late 2000’s; early 2010’s for me.   It’s fully outside of the B-dub, and expansive, so plenty of places to try.  But never go out there with expectations beyond spending time on one of the most beautiful lakes the state has to offer.   You should count yourself blessed to get 1 trout iced but 5 trout days can happen.  Biggest I’ve gotten out of there is 32 inches.  Average had been 24-27.
    • mbeyer
Is Burntside "the Laker" spot to fish in the area? Is that a matter of convenience or is Lake Trout populations far better there than any other lake??
