Twisters, swimbaits, plastic lizards or just about anything can work on certain days. Experiment with baits and color till you find one that works. Use the lightest jig head possible. I have been using 1/4 oz in 20+ fow, and down to 1/8 in the shallower stuff.

That's probably why I haven't caught much, I'm using too big of jigs.

In a few weeks it won't matter too much once the fish go bonkers. Attention to details has helped put a few fish in the boat every time out for me during the slow bite. I would have missed a lot of bites that I had if it wasn't for a sensitive rod, and quality line. I'll be out somewhere this week to try again before I go deer tipping.

Sure hope others had some better luck than me on the river this weekend. It was poor to say the least. frown

Well DTRO, it sucked for me to. I was hoping that someone caught some fish as well. Guess not. All I caught was a sturgeon.

The bite will turn on yet, I'm confident of that.

Just hope I'm there to catch a few smile

oh yeah, to the guys we seen Sat morning walking through the woods in full camo with guns and a dog and zero blaze orange, not only were you breaking the law, you have a death wish with those slugs flying around shocked

Went out for about 2 hours today in the same spots where I caught fish last weekend and early this past week. Today=Zippo! Not even a nibble, nothing. It was downright nasty out!

Do you think the eyes will pick up yet, or its gonna be tough sledding from now on?? I would think if we get a few decent days now in the 40's they should bite like mad?? What do the walleyes do on the river after a giant cold front like this, this late in the fall? I dont want to get my ice fishing stuff out yet!!!

Tried a spot this afternoon south of Chaska aways, ended up with 3 walleyes and 1 sauger all about 15". Caught them all on floating jighead/flathead drug along the bottom. Nice to finally get into a few.

Tried a few spots yesterday..with nothing to show again confused I caught fish in this spot a week and a half ago and its probably around 6-8ft deep. Now after all this cold weather it seems like there isnt a fish within a mile of this spot. The river also came up quite a bit too(more than I thought it would) With the cold weather do you think they moved on to the next deeper hole?? I'm about ready for some ice!!

carp-fisher, would you mind telling me what kind of structure you were fishing? I am probably going to be heading out in a little bit around the chaska area so hopefully i can catch a few.

I poked around the chaska/carver area this afternoon and ended up with just one 12" eye, which went back of course.

bassboy,

I've caught my fish in slack water areas around deep holes. The fish seem to be holding where the current isn't too strong. I thought about trying the chaska creek mouth area as that is a similar sort of set up, but I didn't. It might be good to check though.

ok thanks for the help... i have fished down by the chaska creek area a couple times this fall but i have spent more time down by the bridge than in the slack water. I know there is a very similar spot to that a couple bends down river that i might have to go check out after the vikings game today.

Well between the vikings losing and the zero fish caught it wasnt the best day. O well it was good to be able to get out on the open water and im still looking forward to going out next weekend when you dont have to worry about those deer hunters!

The bite has picked up somewhat in the past few days. I don't know if I would call it a hot bite, (we fished HARD) but we managed to catch and release several with several more to make a meal out of.

Thanks to Capt Fireman for being our guide this weekend. smile

Here's one that went back in:

Maybe a guy could use frogs and catch um too eh dtro?

Might not have to wear ear plugs when I mow!      That’s a spendy one.  It wasn’t hard to find one of those for $6k.  Comparatively and Ariens of the same size is $4,200.  A home owner grade JD for $3,900.  You could get into a commercial grade Z700 for maybe $8k.   I think the work I did today with mine would’ve killed that one there.

On the south end...   This year's MN Fishing Opener weekend was not only great weather wise, the walleyes and saugers were caught in good numbers.  A main fish gut hauler working with a number of resorts commented it was one of the most productive opening weekends he has seen based on the amount of fish guts collected after the weekend. The goto presentation was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   Four Mile Bay held good walleyes in 12 - 18'.  Not a surprise as the walleye bite on the river during the spring season was good and as of late, sturgeon anglers have been reporting catching walleyes on sturgeon rigs.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 12 - 15'.  Across the south shore, 18 - 22' was holding good numbers as well.  As you can see, there are lots of fish around.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well.   As a reminder, the limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers hit the lake.  10 - 15' of water was the norm.     Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season continues through May 15th and then closes until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes were caught in 18 - 25 feet of water, a little deeper than anticipated.  Points were good as were areas with structure.  The morning and evening bite was best.       As water continues to warm, go to spots for walleyes will be neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays.     The goto presentation was a jig and minnow.

I found this dock wheel floating in Black Bay. If it's yours or you know whom it belongs to, go and grab it.

Most years for opener I drive up on Thursday. This year it was Friday afternoon so I figured bait would be tight. The only place that I stopped was L&M in Virginia. They said that they sold out of rainbows by 11am. I got crappie minnows and never needed the rainbows. All my walleye were caught dragging raps. The crappie minnows....well, you know what they caught.
