I would expect you should be able to get some reports soon. I am pretty sure they had their annual 2 day fishing tourney this weekend. That is usually when the lake gets hit the hardest. I was not able to get up there this weekend but if I hear anything from my folks I will pass it on.

I will be interested to see the reports. I've never fished Roosevelt btu drive past it on the way to our cabin a little farther north. Have always wondered about Roosevelt, have always wanted to drop the boat in there .......

my family has a cabin on Emily lake. I have fished Roosevelt a few times for walleye. I have caught a few, I don't think it is a lake for catching numbers of walleye, but from what I understand there are some big fish in there. It is very deep and clear. I know guys troll out deep at night for suspended eyes.

Roosevelt is a tough lake. From what I've seen, its a quality, not quantity lake. Unless you're talking about sunfish, which run very small. I speed troll quite a bit, trying to stay along the edge of the steep drop-offs which are characteristic along most shorelines, and I've picked up one walleye in the last 5 years. Its a good approach for pike and bass however.

I've also tried trolling over deep water at sunset or after dark, and only managed to catch a buzz.

It is a tough lake but fun to fish if you have a couple of spots to try. going out their blind would be tough, but fishing along most of the shoreline and just outside weedlines you'll pick up a few bass and the occasional northern. Its the eyes that got me hooked there arent very good numbers but there are some big ones that are waiting for someone to hunt them down. Goes for the lake trout aswell.

Best advice I can give you on that lake is stick baits, trolling, sun at tree top level and look for surfacing Ciscoe and long lining.

Are the lake trout more of a winter deal?

Actually more of a non-existent deal. Check out the DNR test-netting report on the lake. They're thinking about halting the stocking program because the trout don't seem to be surviving.

Fished it hard for a few days a couple weeks ago and it's was a dead sea out there....morning, day and night. Bass, gills and walleye. All the wonderful secrets I know, nothing panned out.

Lakers....I quit fishing them 10 years ago. Not much for lakers out there. I thought they haulted the stocking program several years ago, at least there was talk back then. Surprised they still do.

  • 2 weeks later...

Was fishing the rock bar just out of woods bay and the weed line that seems to go out to the middle of the lake(really only 15-20yds)but seems like forever in the dark. Anyways, picked up a 12inch crappie and a 9inch sunnie at about 11p.m. a couple of rock bass and that was it. We felt a little nosey but were overhearing some guys not too far from us talking to another boat about their sucess at the island(which I had no idea there was one) with a 26inch and a 32inch eye. If anyone has fished by this island if their is one I wouldn't mind a few pointers. I've put a bit of time in on this lake but haven't came up with any eyes. Always seem to catch something else which is fine. If you do get up there stop in at the gas station in outing and take a look at the monsters they been getting out of this lake it's almost unreal...

Will be chasing them crappies and eyes this weekend hopefully have my uncs mirra craft otherwise will have gramps 16ft duck boat anyone had any good luck the past few weekends. Will probably hit woods bay pretty hard and the weed/rock bar that comes out. Always get a few fish in these spots just never eyes and this seems like too good of spot for them. Might have to find that island aswell heard they get some big ones out there but have never seen it but then again don't venture to the north end often. If anyone is going to be up there this weekend give a reply and maybe team up and find these monsters.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
