Fishing Report for last week 6/16-6/21

I love this site and wanted to let everyone know how we did last week, since so many posters here have helped me figure out the fish and keep an updated report on how the lake is doing. I only make it to Mille Lacs once or twice a year so I can honestly say I do not know the lake as well as the locals but am learning with the help of knowledge and this site. My wife and I fished the MUD from around 7:30am until 8:00pm everyday from 6/16 until 6/21.

The week started out slower, but picked up as the water warmed up throughout the week. From 59.5-65 degrees. We ended up with 114 fish for the week. Our best day was Thursday the 19th with 34 eyes. 13 of them on Thursday were 26.5 - 27.5 inches. Out of the 114, 16 were keeper size and all others were in the slot, most in the 22-27 inch range with none over 28 inches. We were there to have a good time and catch the wife the pigs, so we were targeting the bigger fish when we could. We fished nothing but mud, and found the fish at numerous flats mainly on the edges and outside, and intermixed with the huge balls of bait. I am not sure if they were bugs or perch, but several puked 2 inch perch coming out of the water. Of those fish 4 were tagged.

Nothing new on presentation. Long snells with varied hook colors from red, char, purple with glow beads. Very light biters and caught 98% in the corner of the mouth. I do not believe in giving them too much line to avoid guthooks. Seemed we marked a few fish here and there, and after a couple slides they were gone. Then we would search around the flat and find a bait ball and start catching again. Do not get in the pack and stay there, if you can't resist the pack, work the edges and outside away from the ball of boats! We moved several times to different flats, and caught a few then they would shut down. Then we would move flats depending if the graph showed fish or bait. Mornings were the best bite until 11:00 or so. Slower you can get the boat the better.

Long story short, we had a great time staying at Fishers again and will be back. Not as soon as I'd like though. The mud should be on fire like last year in a matter of days I would assume. I think we did great for the reports I am hearing, by the way my wife kicked my butt for numbers for the week! Good Luck

I also fished Friday and Saturday. We fished shallow rock and gravel with bobbers. We fished Friday morning from 8am-12am even though it was calm we picked up 14. Then we fished the evening and picked up 12 more. We fished Saturday from 10am-2pm and picked up 20 fish. We had 2 over 28" and had 10 keepers. 6 of those 10 were 17 to 17 3/4 and very fat. I wish I would have weighed those 6. Didn't make it out to the mud but it sounds like it's picking up out there. Good job Miller.

Welcome to FM!!!! Very good post.

Again if you want the bigger fish , hit the Mud!!! Good to hear that the purple/chart bead (mn Vikings color as i call it when I use that) is starting to catch more fish. I always go to that if the traditional red hook isn't producing.

That is one of my favorites.

That was great post miller and glad to have you around. Sounds like the slip bobber rock and gravel bite is on fire right now.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
