Choosing the right GPS Help!

zasteeg

Question

I am interested in getting a GPS. I would like one that I can use in my car as well as have the ability to use on lakes. I'd like it to be able to show me directions and download info on lakes that I'd like to fish (in Minnesota, Canada, and Iowa.) . It can be older, that's no problem for me because I'd like it to be affordable. I'm pretty new to these that's why I'm asking for help. What should I be looking for that can be used for both car and boat?

Thanks,

Justin

Lowrance XOG its around $219.00- 269.00 it does trun by turn navigation speech also. You can also put in the Lake Master Pro and Navionics for lake maps. Its Easy to use also it comes with a mount to put in the car. Go to lowrance website or do a search for it.

Lowrance H2O. You can take it anyplace, and you can buy chips that give incredible detail on many lakes from either Lakemaster or Navionics. If you go to the Lakemaster website they sell a package with the GPS and the chip. If you really want to get into it Lowrance has a multi-disc set of maps that allows you to download detailed maps onto a chip and put the chip in the GPS. If you went that far you would be amazed at the level of detail. I have found it very useful on road trips out to the middle of no place and have only gotten confused for maybe 2 minutes before I found my way.

There will be long discussions about whether you should go with the color of B&W unit. I have the B&W cause of limited $$$ and I decided that the detailed maps were more important to me.

The XOG is very nice but keep in mind that it is not waterproof so when on the boat keep that in mind if it starts to rain or your in big water..as for the h2o very nice unit but doesnt have turn by turn for highway..still can use it for the car but if you put a location it it won't take you there turn by turn it will draw a straight line to where you want to go as the crow flies and will tell you how far off course you are.. won't take you by roads..

Yep, if you're looking for turn by turn the H20 won't work for you. It is great as a portable unit though.

I dunno if your interested in a car/boat unit only or if you want one that you can use as a hand held, but I own the Garmin 60CSx, and it is the best GPS I have ever used. The antenna is very strong, and I can even get signal for it inside some buildings. A little on the spendy side though, I paid $450.00 for it last year and I have used it for military purposes and for navigation in New Orleans when I was there on leave.

I just purchased the Lowrance Expedition Color $300 + $100 for the 2008 lakemaster chip.(hope I made a good choice) Just getiing used to it, I can let you know how it goes, although I've never used anything else so I won't have anything to compare to. I do know so far that it uses AA batteries rather quickly, but I'll be using the 12v adapter in the boat & truck. L2f

So would you say the XOG is a better all around unit than the Expedition-C ?

The XOG is the right idea, but with bad execution. Screen is to small and hard to see in sunlight and the waterproofing is pretty weak.

If Lowrance gave it a bigger, better screen and made it more waterproof they wouldn't be able to keep them in stock!

I predict you will see them, or somebody else do just that in a couple of years and they will sell like crazy. Why, you could even buy your wife one for Mother's Day (and use it on your boat) wink

I think "The Lee" has something there. After reading a lot of posts' about Lowrance problems I think Garmin would be a better choice to look at. It was mentioned on another thread Garmin has a great GPS line being that is what they primarely focus on.

No I would still buy the Expedition over the Xog but I do 95% fishing. the Xog is one of the only cross over units that does all. Look for more to come in 09!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
