Okay, so I have a MN license. Can I fish from shore on the WI side of the Croix?

I dont think so, If you fish on shore or transport fish in Wisconsin you would be considerd fishing in Wisconsin. Same goes for Minnesota shore fishing if your from Wisconsin. That would be my logic I could be wrong. I hope I'm not because I'm only allowed one wrong a year grin

Another question I also wonderd about if one fishes a body of water that has legal fishing after the season is over for the rest of the state and you get pulled over and checked and you are say 30 miles from that body of water how do you prove the fish was not taken from a local lake. Or is your word good enough.

You know curt i wonder on that last part too... especially when I'm hunting pheasants in Nebraska and I'm truckin thru MN with a buncha dead birds in the back. Especially if I stopped to hunt some more on the way home

And I agree about the shore fishing thing - on the water you're fine with a MN license, but if you are physically on WI ground you better have a WI license

Just stand in the water. cool

Kidding aside, I've wondered that same thing for a while. I called and didn't get a clear answer from the WiDNR. Anyone else have any luck finding this out?

MN anglers are allowed to shore fish on the WI side, and vice versa. Check page 42 of the rules and regulations.

Thanks JB, I would suggest to have a clear story on hand in case you are checked while traveling through Wisconsin. Do the rules state anything on transporting the fish if in Wisconsin. These rules might be a little murky and up to the CO for determanation.

Hermy! Negatotry on that one Good Buddy! You can fish the river with a Minnesota License or you can fish the river with a Wisconsin License. or I suppose you could fish it with licenses from both states if you are in doubt and want to satisfy the CO from either state. But if you are on the Wisconsin shore you need a Wisconsin License.

Because the St. Croix is a border water and because Wisconsin permits fisherman to use two lines, Minnesota Fisherman may use two lines while fishing the St. Croix.

Now I could be wrong so I would call and check but I disagree. I think you can fish on the Wisconsin side with a Minnesota license. In college we fished the Mississippi near La Crosse, which is a border water. We got checked by the CO's all the time and we all had WI licenses but fished on the Minnesota side. I dont think it would be any different on the St. Croix would it? I could be wrong but thats what I think.

This is the exact quote from page 42 in the rules and regulations..."anglers may launch and fish from either shore and may transport their catch by the most direct route to the state in which they are licensed".

My favorite shorefishing spot on the croix is on the WI side. I think it'd be pretty silly to allow Minnesotans to launch their boats in WI, but not let them fish from the shore.

Take a copy of the regs with you when you go. I would assume that all the CO's know the rules, maybe the sherrifs don't or something. I don't assume anymore, just take the regs with you. But you are legal to do so.

Second that...I've been checked by WI CO and Sheriff with a Minnesota license on the Croix. It's considered border water so you can use your Minnesota License.

There is a part in Hudson that connects to the Saint Croix that everone assumes is the Saint Croix but it's actually a lake in WI that you CANNOT fish without a WI License. I was pointed that out by a very nice WI CO.

I'll add thirds - if you are a MN res with a MN license, you can fish from shore on both sides of the river. I grew up in Ortonville and the regs regarding this issue are the same for SD border waters as they are on the Croix.

Actually I am a WI res. with a MN license. I am just going to buy the WI license anyway. I'll be making a trip out there in July so I'll need it anyway.

Hermy,

To fish the St. Croix you must be licensed in the state you reside. WI residents must have a WI license and MN residents vice versa, so it's good you'll be getting a WI license.

Good luck and hammer them! Turk

you have to transport your fish to your home by the most direct and feasable route.

yes, 4th or 5'thed? any resident of the state they reside holding a license from their state of residence can fish either shore or on the water.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
