Has anyone fished this lake? Done a little research and it looks like a good lake. More interested in ice fishing it than anything.

Doop, Snowbank is a solid ice lake for lakers and walleyes. While there's good walleye water and some good laker water on the motorized side, a lot of laker folks drive out on the ice road to the BWCAW line and tow their gear further in on foot.

If by research you mean you've looked at a map, then you get the picture. Some of the nicest laker water is over the line.

I've only fished snowbank a few times. Most of my time is spent on Bside because laker numbers are better, size seems better (from the folks I've talked to who fish Snowbank lakers), and you can drive/snowmobile/ATV anywhere on Bside with no restrictions. The last is probably the biggest reason I stick with Bside. More water and all easily accessible, and if I want a wilderness experience I'll walk into Trout Lake off Vermilion.

I'm not saying there aren't big lakers in Snowbank, because there are. Just a personal preference thing. Not that I'd pass up a trip to Snowbank with someone who really knows that lake. There are a handful of real Snowbank experts in the area. I'm just not one of them. gringrin

Doop,

Have fished this lake in the winter for 30 years. Is a fair lake trout lake in the early season. By the third and fourth weekends, slows down a lot. There are some northerns to be had in the southeast corner of the lake, but not many fish for them there in the winter. Virtually no walleyes caught in the winter.

It does, however, have a very good walleye population and in the summer can be very good at times. Probably better known for it's summer smallies.

Ken, I think you and I are going to have to make a trip in there just after laker opener next year. gringringrin

I'd heard better winter walleye reports word-of-mouth than what you said, so I wonder where they go in winter? Have you winter fished for them in the shallower bays or out in the deeper water?

Steve,

Snowbank walleyes are a lot like Burntside walleyes. Clear water and good feed makes 'em finicky at times. I've fished a fair amount of Snowbank for lakers and a little for northerns in the winter, and have never come across a walleye even by accident.

A trip to Snowbank? I think it can be arranged!

I used to fish Snowbank quite a bit in the winter. Like Stfcatfish, I moved over to Burntside because of motorized access to all parts of the lake. Seems like on Snowbank, the majority of good laker water is on the BWCA side, and I don't have that much ambition to hike long distances for them. That being said, I've caught some lake trout on the non-BWCA side and seen some nice ones over the years. Smitty's is a great resort to stay at and they keep a real nice road maintained throughout the winter.

Regarding the Snowbank walleyes, the summer bite was real good about a half-dozen years back. I haven't been in there much since. While ice fishing for lakers, I caught a chunky 18 incher off the bottom in 72 FOW one time. I also saw a guy catch one out of about 50 feet, that time it was a real nice 25 incher.

Snowbank was always fun after dark in the winter, you'd catch lots of eelpout. Rarely any over 5 lbs, but they were plentiful! We would try fishing for walleyes after dark, but I'm not sure I ever caught one while trying that...just the pouts.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
