New pup whining

Ralph Wiggum

Recommended Posts

We just got our first dog this weekend. He will be sleeping in a crate/kennel. Any tips to help ease his anxiety? Once he gets to sleep he's fine, but he whines and whimpers for quite a while before he nods off. He's 11-weeks old.

Thanks.

When we raised labs, we would put an old wind-up alarm clock in the crate, under the blanket. It was suppose to imitate the "heartbeat" of the mom, it seemed to work pretty well.

The only thing that really works is to let them get used to it and cry themselves out. Once they get used to the crates, the majority of dogs that I have had loved it and would sleep in there even when they weren't told to.

Good luck!

That's what I figured. We'll just suffer in the mean time crazy

He actually doens't mind the crate. He'll go in and lay down on his own, but if I close the door, he starts the sobbing.

You might want to try covering the crate with a blanket when you put him in it for the night. It worked for a friend of mine that got a puppy from me. They all go through it and it won't last long.

I've put a radio in the room and at times that seemed to help some. Other then that. Just let him do his whining. You don't want to go in and calm him as he'll catch on that is how to get you to come in the room.

Yep, we went through it too. We covered the kennel with a blanket, and put a talk radio right outside the door so she could hear it but we couldn't. Most of the time that worked. Some times she would whine or bark in the middle of the night. I let her outside once to go to the bathroom and then back in the kennel. If she continued to whine, I picked the whole kennel up (with her in it) and carried it to a room in the basement and closed the door so we couldn't hear her. Don't let her think that if she whines she can get out of the kennel. It took 3 or 4 weeks for us before she would sleep through the entire night without a problem.

Which talk radio station? Don't you run the risk of having a seriously screwed up dog if you put on jason Lewis or some other goofball.

I built a whelping kennel about 4 x 8 in the garage. If you put some shavings down on one end the dog will go and do it's business in the shavings. An old towel or blanket to sleep on is also needed, water as well. With the dog in the garage the noise wasn't an issue. I used a combination of NPR and Soucheray to allow the dog to develop a more balanced view of life.

NPR to Souchie eh? Now that's a swing...!

Actually NPR to Lewis would be a beetter way to balance... ultra hard left to ultra hard right... Souchie is almost in the middle just a little right of center... much like most of America.

NPR would be a great way to get your dog to heal on the left! hehehe, but I'd fear he'd let all the birds scurry away and and I prefer that he'd pee on a tree rather than hug a tree!

Good Luck!

Warm the blankets or whatever you put in with him in the dryer. Get it warm - some have used a hot water bottle for the pup to cuddle next to

My lab did that too. I remember having to move her from a different room, to a farther room, then the basement, then the garage one night because it was so bad. It wasn't that she needed to go to the bathroom, just didn't want to be left alone. I tried the clock thing and don't think that it worked. But I personally think that the way you handle it now makes a big difference for the rest of their lives. Don't give in, it'll get better by day and eventually won't be a problem at all.

He is getting much better. His whining is usually very short-lived now--even non-existant if he's really tired. Ear plugs help a ton smile

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
