Wondering if the fishing was still as hot at Leech as it has been? Will be in Hackensack this weeekend and thought about fishing leech for some walters in between some gills and crappies. Have not heard as much talk this week and was curious how people have been doing...maybe the bite is so good people haven't made it back home to their pc yet!!..... grin

My neighbor was on Leech on Sunday. They put a fair day of fishing in but, caught quite a few jumbo perch and an eye. I don't know what part of the lake specifically. Knowing this guy it was a poke here and a poke there...

I will be at Woman LL beginning Saturday with two of my sons (and my mom!!). Have not been up there for years. Not much of a walleye guy. Will be chasing the bass and crappies mostly....unless I stumble on some dumb walleyes. Should be interesting. I will report back.

I had a couple half day trips booked for Monday Am and Tuesday PM on Leech.

Monday was great... We caught around 25 walleyes with 21.5 being the largest. We had tons in the 12-13 inch range. I sent my clients home smiling with their 15-17 inch walleyes.

Tuesday I took the same couple out, the evening started off slow.. it was pretty windy out of the NE. We did manage to boat around 20 walleyes but really had to work for them and they came late in the evening. We had several doubles and even a triple shortly before we left. The ride home had some good 3.5ft rollers heading back to the landing on Stoney Pt. We couldn't buy a fish on a shiner... all leeches and crawlers.

We call it Ginzer's Rock. It is on the shore of Bear Island about .1 mile south of the north tip of the island on the west side. There was some paint on it last time I saw it. Its bigger than the average rocks in the area.

Ok, Im sorry. This question will be off-topic. But "B@ssmaster", I have to ask. What is the length and weight of that ginormous smallie you are holding? Wow, is all I have to say.

Its nice to hear the fish are biting as I will be heading up Friday after work and staying until Monday. We are going to be staying and going out of Hiawatha Beach resort. Only question I have I know you guy are catching them bobber fishing but what are you using for bait? Should I get minnows, crawlers, leeches?? Any info is appreciated

We've been doing good on both fatheads and leeches. mostly jigging with both gold and green jigheads. Last weekend gold seemed to do the best. Kept a couple of limits on Saturday during the middle of the day. Don't know how many 12 - 13 inchers we tossed back. Good luck!

Hey thanks for the info, can't wait to get up there. We were up there last year and just hammered the Walleye's out in Walker Bay.

Thanks again.

Was up last weekend. Biggest were a pair about 25". Few eaters too. Drifting lindys and jig. Shiners and leeches worked. Worked mostly the humps and pine pt.

I skipped out of the boundary waters 3 days early to go to Leech this past weekend. The fishing was terrible up where I was in the B-dub. First night on Leech just hung around Stoney with Some raps and Plastics. Only got 2 pike. Others around me had caught a few eyes though, live bait. Friday morning I was on Grand View flats and caught 7 eyes, 3 pike (one was 33"), 2 broken lines, and a 35-40" muskie that snapped it as soon as he saw me. Then my motor died (electrical short somewhere) and I had to troll all the way back to The other side of Stoney. lot of fun there....

I couldn't figure out what "the B-dub" is, then it clicked.

We did really well over the weekend. We also fished pine point and just nailed the eye's. Fishing in about 9' fow using either leeches or shiners they were hitting both. All the fish we caught were 14"-16" with a few over the slot that went back in the water. Only thing about this past weekend was the wind both Saturday and Sunday the wind was horrible 20mph at times. Yesterday morning the lake was glass no wind.

I was also up on the week-end and did very well. Limited out on 16-17 inchers with jigs and leeches. Also many 12-13 inchers that went back. I only went out in the mornings because I was entertaining relatives that don't fish. Caught most of my fish in around 9 ft of water. This is my third summer on Leech and is by far the best fishing we've had. I'm normally a bass fisherman but am starting to catch on to the walleye habits. I am suprised to see them in so shallow this time of year but the bass are also still on their beds in some areas so I guess its just a late season this year.

Im taking the wife up there Thursday. We are putting in at Stoney point. I'm thinking of starting with crawlers and leeches on lindy's. We are going to start around duck point in 8-12ft. I see Pine Point is still producing fish, anyone fished snake pit in the last couple of days?

I agree with fishfurfun, it is addicting, when they really start biting!!!!

On Saturday I counted 30 boats on Pine, everyone was fishing in 8'-10' and most people were using shiners. The best luck we had was trolling along in 9ft going between pine point resort and I think it was called grand vu (yellow resort) if I remember correct. Good luck and have fun

  • 2 weeks later...

Bassman25,

Sorry for the slow response, hadn't checked this thread in a while. It's a bit of an optical illusion, it wasn't as big as it appears. It was only a 20.5" fish. Guesstimate it at about 6 or 6.5 lbs. Released to fight another day.....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
