What seams to be the best depth out there for the crappies?
I fished a weedline and only got sunnies and two crappies. But that was Sunday in the actic blast.

22 - 24' of water has been really good! Fishing anywhere from 2 - 10' off the bottom has worked really well for me!

Minnowdangler71, I'm sorry, we don't rent overnight, too many problems.

All of our houses are in sunfish, crappie, northern pike areas.

We shy away from walleye spots, because walleyes can be so inconsistent and they bite best during hours that we don't rent.

Rainman,
Shoot me an E-mail, I have a question for ya.

I was just wondering if anyone can help me. i want to take my son fishing for crappies on lake waconia an i want to know where i could go to get some in the afternoon early evening hours. I dont know the lake and all of the names of reefs and bays so any help would be greatfull

Hey Crappiedad,
They have been hitting well on Pilsbury in about 24-26 feet of water, around 5:30 the bite has been the best til well into the evening. The suspended ones have been a little more active, i have caught some up to 7 feet off the bottom in these areas. So don;t be afraid to fish about 4-5 feet off the bottom. Just head into In Towne Marina to ask how to get to pilsbury reef. It is around in the next bay from waconia bay. crappie minnows and larvae have been the best. The guys at intowne will point you in the right direction. If we get some more stable weather in the next couple days, they will really bite good, i think you and your kid will have a blast. The size isn;t the best, but you should have action. Good Luck and Good Fishing!!!

I have to agree with jiggingspoon, I have had good luck in 23' in wagners off by myself. I also have luck in the morning from sun up to about 10:00. If you want bigger slabs but less bites, you could try Harms pt also. Stop by Intowne marina if you have any other questions, they're very helpful and friendly! Good luck!

Thank you jigginspoon and smallmouth. I need all the help i can get. I dont know if i and my son will get out this weekend or not. I might go and buy a new gas auger. I am tired of hand drilling holes I am getting to old to do that stuff. So the action is mostly at late afternoon or night then right. I just remember about 6 years ago I went out right in front of the marina and i could not keep the the lines in the water. The crappies were bitingf good. what happened everyone I talk to where i work in waconia does not like lake waconia. keep me up to date maybe we can meet sometime. my e-mail is [email protected].

I was out again today with not much luck. The clock was my biggest challenge. The past few weeks I've had success on sunifish and perch throughout the day, with crappies nonstop from 5:30 on. But today was a different story. After talking with some neighbors, We've noticed a little hault to the action. Has anyone else noticed? I wasn't able to check out the crappie acation, but today's sunnies and perch seemed a bit slow compared to the previous weeks.
I hope afer this snowstorm (which I am still waiting for) I hope the weather will snap and give us some more action.

Sat was the slowest day of the year for me so far, 3 of us fished from 4:30 until 11:30, caught 3 crappies total and 8 small walleye. At 7am Sunday morning the small walleye started pounding the minnows, caught 15 eyes less than 13" from 7 till 7:45am. Decided to move the house, was going to drop it in Pillsbury, but decided against it when I saw all the houses. Put 'er down near Kegs in 20'.
Lots of fish on the Vex but only two biters, a 9" crappie and an 11" eye.
The fun part of the new move was drilling the hole, dropping the camera down the hole and coming face to face with a crappie.
Will let you know how the Wed night attempt goes

Was out in the middle of Wagoners Bay in 22-25 feet. 3 of us caught about 25 Crappies, nothing big, mostly 8 1/2 inches to 9 1/2, just an occasional 10. using minnows. forgot my depthfinder, which I know is a big sin, know I'd have done better with it. it IS fishing in the blind. Has anyone tried the deep hole NE of the island, or know if that is worth a try. Thanks.Jack.

Am I on drunk or is there another million houses on the lake since two weeks ago? I was out Friday night and did well on Craps with no one within a football field of me, and then Saturday I head out with the young'un and it looks like I'm in the middle of a block party. Where'd everyone come from? Is it because it's so easy to get on the ice this year? "Cuz the fishings Ok but nothing to write home about. You could catch the same size fish pretty much anywhere/any lake.... Not complaining so much, just curious what's up.

Posted

Intowneguy- I'm drunk, but still see the houses.
Some moron put up a permanant next to mine so close we can shake hands.
It's getting pretty ridiculous out there.
I agree with you on the fishing. It's good, but nothing outstanding.

Pulled my house for the weekend and hit a private lake just N of Mille Lacs. 28" Northern around 6lbs but not much else.

Returned to Waconia last night and picked a spot from me new map from FishingMinnesota. Must of been a good pick because there was a city of houses right were I wanted to sit. Oh, well went a little farther South. Right between Wagners and Pillsbury in around 22ft.

Was hitting nothing with minnow. Had to leave at 8:30.
8:15 toss on a glow ant and a waxie.
Four craps from 8-9 inch.

Has anybody been out lately? I'm curious on how the bite is? I'm planning on a Superbowl fishout. Might as well- I can always listen to the game while I fish.
Just hope the weather will cooperate more than what they are expecting.
If anyobody is planning on being near Pillsbury Sunday, let me know. We can toast to next year's Vikes.

carverfshrmn- I should be out there most of the day and into the eve. I'm in a tan permanent - homemade looking. I don't know if that helps or not - they all look like that.

Tank, Will keep an eye out, just found out we will be hittin it on Saturday afternoon too, so hope to have some info for ya!, Hey InTowne what is up?

Fishtank,
I might be headin' out this weekend too, maybe I'll see you out there. Hey...

Nice joke, as much as i love the vikes, it is very true.

Was out on tuesday night and tonight and did very well on the crappies. suprisingly tonight was much better and picked up about 80 crappies with my buddy and we kept 16 nice 10-11"ers, they weren't huge but they stuck out from the other ones we were catching. Good eaters, fished from 7:30-9 on tues and 6-9 tonight. For a while i couldnt fish with 2 lines they were biting so well tonight. The vex was just full of fish the whole time. It was a blast.

Haven't been to Waconia, Are the houses pretty thick? Went to Prior and everyone seemed to have enough room on the crappie holes.

Last night was pretty slow and friggin' cold, especially since the requlator on my stove decided to die on me. Need to go to Northern Tool at noon to buy a new one. Caught only 3 8" crappies and only one 10" Eye. Vex was pretty much lit up all night but couldn't get the fish to bite. They would follow bait up from 18' to 9' then drop back down, tried small, med,& large crappie minnows, wax worms, fatheads, small to med shiners and Bio-bait all with different presentations just couldn't get many to take the hook.
Let you know how the weekend went on Monday, Sat sounds good, hopefully the weather will stabilize a little to make the fish more aggressive...

Spent afternoon and last night in Wageners bay, took a while but did get a nice limit of Crapps all 10-12" In the afternoon, they started biting off the bottum but towards 8-midnight, then they were suspended at about 10' in 23' of water. Waconia should be hoppin this weekend with the annual snowmobile swap.
Good luck everyone!

snowmobile swap??? When does that start? Is it by the marina or where? thanks

Posted

Hey Guys, Headin out today, What's up, still a zoo out there? Hoppin for crappies, keepers, any ifo out there?

Posted

The snowmobile swap is usually in the ballroom parking lot. How thick is the ice out there? Is my lazer hand auger going to cut through? I am planning on going out this weekend.
Thanks

Cuz like I said, he was breaking off a lot and they were like gold at the time.  Guys an't giving up anything when combat fishing, I'm sure he pissed off some folks running around jumping in and out of open holes. 😉

🤔why didnt ya "leech" some of them black flies from the guy!!!!!🤗😂   awe come on....wanderer would of said it too!!!!😉
    • leech~~
Au, yes the black fly, aka the looper bug.  I remember the first time I was introduced to it.  There must have been 20-30 guys out in front of the French on the ice. This one guy was running from hole to hole and pulling fish, but he was also breaking off a lot.  When I finally got close to him, he said he had 2lb line and just the bug on the end and jigging.  I think I had about 6lb line and some jig with waxies.  I jumped in my Suv and buzzed up to the bait store in Two harbors "which is closed now" to get new line and bugs.  By the time I got back and fishing again the bite must have been over!  Spent the rest of the day laying on the ice staring down the hole, ton's of fish went by but not bite!! ☹️    I used to get up at like 3:00am to drive up from Brooklyn Center, fish until dark and drive home.  When I had more of the wander spirit.  Heck I remember when I had no brains or money in the spring, getting up at like 2:30am, driving up and fishing every stream for about an hour that I could get to from Duluth to Grand Marais.  Then driving all the way home the same day.  🤪

Last day of myself hunting before I help my friend with new clients. Back on the bigger marsh, mainly teal but 5 fulvous whistling ducks. A medium size duck but they fly and decoy like Canada geese, big circles and glide in. They are noisey birds

Kettle, sounds like an awesome trip. Never see drake bluewings in MN during the season. For the bridge my pucker factor would've been 11, and that's walking across both ways!!

Gotta love META, right????  Naw, they ain’t tracking’…

I did the looper steelhead thing in front of the French River once.  It was fun. I got one looper but the sight fishing aspect of it was the most fun.   We saw a couple guys limit on steelhead up close to shore and learned the black fly was the way to catch ‘em.  We didn’t have any.   My first 40+ hour day that I can remember.  Went to work Friday morning, Van Halen concert Friday night, too jacked up on the way home to call it a day so we loaded up for the North Shore.  Fished all day, drove home Saturday night.     Those crazy kids…   Chequamegon Bay and the Apostle Islands have always been a want but an undone deed.  The wander spirit has faded from my old traveling buds.  They like to stick to what they know now.
    • Wanderer
      Oh, he knows…. 😉
    • SkunkedAgain
About 20" of ice in Black Bay., although that's just based on how far my auger went before breaking through.
    • monstermoose78
I would love get the cohos through the ice.
