No im on the outlet side. Thats a friends house at the access. They have had to pull there fair share of people out of that access. Let me know how you do. I may put the duck boat down on the lake so i can sneek out in the a.m. Look 4 a 14' drab green boat and say hi.

Cannon lake bridge is always a good spot, especially right now. I have seen tons of people there lately.

Hiya -

Going to be down in the Northfield/Dundas area one day this week, and will have some time to kill. Thought about packing a rod and getting my feet wet while I'm there.

Not looking for anyone's secret spots, but, generally speaking, how wade-able is the Cannon right now? Can you get around a little on foot? And what's there to be caught?

C&R, so anything I catch is going back...

Thanks for any info.

Cheers,

Rob Kimm

Its very low you should be able to go where ever you very well please, as long as you dont find a mud hole, also the Straight river has some awesome smallie action.

Posted

I've caught lot's of smallies in both the Straight and Cannon rivers using #7 original chartreuse. Both rivers are very wade-able

You could find some Walleye and Catfish also. Spring Brook is in that area so Brook Trout might be possible too.

Goodluck!

I have some Family that owns property on the river in Dundas, I have not fished it lately, but have talked to a few that were wading by when I was out there visiting.

Bite was kinda slow, but fish were there to be had, sounded like very small cranks, jigs, and even flies were turning a few smallies and some rough fish.

River is way down so the pools are congregating the amounts of fish, along with the blow downs in the river.

Good Luck, and have fun.

Hiya -

Thanks for all the info guys - really appreciate it. LC - would take you up on it if I had any idea when I'd be able to get out or for how long. This is a total seat of the pants deal, and I might not have time to get out at all. Thanks though...

If I get out, I'll report back...

Cheers,

you probably wouldn't even need to wade, my dad and i got quite a few fish (carp, redhorse, and smallies) by just using crawlers on the bottom or bomber minnowbaits fished in deep or rocky areas

Going to a welch campground and wondering how the fishing is in this river. What do you mostly catch and what should i be using? Cranks, live bait.... topwaters??

Posted

I've gotten sheephead, pike, and smallies in that stretch. Jigs and twister tails, inline spinner, bait if you want a little bit of everything the river has to offer.

Good luck.

i read in another thread that you catch bowfin from the cannon river. i have recently started fishing it for carp and bass and i would love to add the bowfin to my lifelist! what would you recomend this time of year for cannon r. fins? are there any around northfield? is it even worth targeting them right now or should i wait until next spring?

thanks

I've seen lot's of dead ones (and a couple alive and swimming) below the morristown dam when I go down there for the spring silver run...unfortunately that's about all the info I have for you.

I'm sure you could sill find them this time of year on the Cammon. A few weeks ago A guy I was fishing with caught a Bowfin below the Kings Mill Dam. Where ever you find young (small sized) fish on The Cannon River Bowfin are sure to be around. Look under dams where the water wil be well oxygenated from the falling water. This will concentrate the bait fish. Bowfin can gulp air off the surface and this will sometimes give there position away.

KTapper hase been on them all year and fishes them at night. He could help you with the bait "Q". Cut bait and Worm should work.

The reason I target them in the spring is that it is the time of year when the female weigh the most. There are a few people on the web site that are looking for the State record. So I'm giving them a run for there record.

thanks for the pointers. where is this dam located?

Posted

Faribault. Next to Lacannes Marine.

Coming from Farmington, Follow Hwy 3 till it ends at Hwy 21. Go left. Take a right at your first stop light. Its down about a mile.

It's the dam that hold Cannon and Wells lake.

Bowfin tend to push fish up and corner the bait fish. Then they will swim back and forth just down stream keeping them pinned in.

Another way to find the dam is, It is just north of the traffic light on Hwy60 by the Wal-Mart. Near I-35.

thanks everyone, i don't know when i'll be able to get down there, but when i do i'll report my luck

I don't think you would have to go to the King Mill Dam to find one. Any where there is a dam on the Cannon river will do. If you see people catching small fish just fish alittle farther down stream (not much though, just on the down sreaam side of the school) and there is a good chance the Bowfin will be in that area.

Hey guys summers winding down for this college student and looking to get some fun fishing day outings in yet this summer. See that you guys are talking about white bass and such on the cannon chain. I have heard about the dam at the end of it in Cannon Falls by the cannon river. Was just wondering if we would have good luck fishing the cannon river.

I took my boat out on cannon today, which took me about 15 minutes to get off the access, and realized how low the water was. I could not get up the river to warsaw, and could not get through the bridge to go into wells. There were sandbars where there should not be sand bars showing. In my estimate, the water is down roughly 3 feet. I know they are working on the king mill dam, but there is no way the water will come up before winter. Are the fish going to freeze out this winter?

Or a better question could be, if there are any fish in the lake are they going to freeze out this winter. (I have fished it about 10 times this year and caught little other than bass)

Posted

they are probibly not going to make it. we would need 4 to 5 inches of rain to even get the water running.
