Out Saturday as well but went through Adrians. We hardly found anything, moved around quite a bit. Caught 5 in 26' and graphed only a few more than that. 4 saugers, 1 walleye, plus 1 whitefish - can't leave that one out.

From the looks of things out on the ice, fish were scattered and there were few to be caught. Lots of people moving around, portables and permanents scattered everywhere with plenty of guys just hanging outside their house and walking around. I'm sure someone pounded em but I don't think he was anywhere near us.

Good luck this week.

We were in 20 fow in the gap and had fish biting all day on Saturday. For the shallow water we only kept 4 fish threw back one 27 incher but caught primarily saugers. I also knew groups in 28 in the gap and 28 off adrians road and 26 off adrians road. Sounds like we did well in comparison to them.

Went out of adrians for the weekend in 28 fow, got lots of fish on the vex coming to look at the chubby darter, only 3 hit it, but lots would follow it then go hit the dead sticks with plain hooks. Biggest was only 15 inch, but numbers were high caught about 20 by myself. If your looking for good time team crush will be at the north american ice fishing curcit on 1/9/11 in winnapeg. Lots of nice fish to be had up there.

Big Red over and out

Two of us fished out Adrian's road. Cory sent us out Friday at 1pm to 25 to 30 foot of water. We set up in 28 foot. Fished Friday afternoon, Saturday, and Sunday morning. Fishing was slow. Caught 20 or so, kept 9, mostly Sauger. Went to shore on Saturday night, found the cleaning houses FULL of nice sized walleye that were caught in 23 to 25 foot. We would have moved shallower if we had more than 3 hours of fishing left.

The fish and bite were more like mid-Feb, than the weekend before Christmas. I do not know if Cory was trying to put us on fish or keeping everyone spread out.

We fished on 22 inches of good ice. No water coming up through the holes. Heading up again before new years.

This past weekend of fishing wasn’t stellar by any means, but we still caught fish and it was better than last weekend. One thing I will bring up right away this morning is, if you’re fishing on your own, fish the contour lines, humps and dips out in the bowl, that’s were the fish will be traveling. If you don’t know where they’re at, get a GPS system with a Lake Master Chip for Lake of the Woods. I know that some people make it sound so easy, but you have to work for them, just like anything else. The majority of fish that were caught this weekend were in Lighthouse Gap in 26 – 30 feet of water (mostly in 28-29 feet). I did talk to a few guys that stayed at the resort that said they lined up on the US/Canadian line and drilled holes, but there was only one guy catching fish, and it was one right after the other. When that happens, don’t watch him, drill a hole and help him out, because you’ve just found the fish. It was a matter of 50 feet from the bite, to a none existent bite, and some days that’s all that it takes. The weather should be stable as we move into the Christmas holiday season, which should get the fish biting. It’s only a matter of time before they turn on, so don’t miss out when it happens. The last thing I’ll say today is, “that’s why they call it fishing, not catching”…God Bless and Merry Christmas!

We fished out of Adrians on the 17,18,19,and 20th in 28fow. My wife did really well, as she always out fishes us guys. She always uses a gold jig. I was using a pink/gold glow. Had at least a dozon on that I lost right toward the top, don't know what that was about. Didn't limit out but stuffed ourselves on a couple of good fish feeds and brought home 10 Saugers, 4 Walleyes and a jumbo Perch. Ice was great. Roads were great. Heading back up over New Years!

Hey CaptainGary i'd try tweakin my hook and sharpening it with a lil diamond stone if i was loosin alot of fish. Or maybe just changing jigs completely.. Then again we all have one of those days where they just like to get off.. But i guess thats part of what keeps us coming back.. Thanks for the report grin

Just got back from three days of fishing off pine island. We did pretty well all three days. Got good numbers of sauger, pretty much just had to wait form them to swim by; walleye were pretty tough to pick up for us. Tuesday we got into some quality sauger, got 10 over 14". I picked up 4 walleye on monday, 2 tuesday and 2 yesterday - biggest was pushing 17, smallest as 15". We fished 25-29' the entire time; wasn't hearing much positive about the shallow bite so we didn't even try it.

Hot lures changed day to day. Monday jigging northland glow green was the ticket, Tuesday my buddy iced 13 in two shakes on a pair of gold gem-n-eye jigs. I only had a pout to my name until I changed it up and started wholloping them with a glow w5 jigging rap. Wednesday we tried deepest yet, drilled and found fish waiting for us! I started out good with the glow w5, wound up using that, a beat up stop sign with just a tip of glow paint remaining and a glow pink frostee on the dead stick the rest of the day.

We sat out fishing until 10pm Monday night in my buddies fish house for the solstice. Only marked two fish after dark, so no surprises there! Planned on fishing further west Wednesday, ended up heading back out on Adrian's to help my buddy get his house up and rolling. tired

JP: First of all great reports, good information and honest too. Just wondering if Jodie used to work at Riverbend? I've been going up there for 11 years, and if she is one and the same she was a good fisherperson back then too, so don't feel to bad. LOL

I've noticed when I start losing a lot of minnows it's to those crafty little Saugers that have learn how to just grab hold of the tail of your minnow just waiting for you to set your hook. I've had them grab hold and I've just reeled up with them hanging on all the way up to a couple 3 - 4 ft under the ice before they let go. I usually try catching them and throwing down the other holes to bother the other guys with me, lol. I think they have been caught and release so many times they have learned how to just take the minnows, lol. Keeps you busy trying to hook them for sure.

Just returned from low fishing was great for me and my wife in 28 fow caught lots of saugers. Then fished shallow in the mornings and evenings in 9 fow in front of Pine Island. We caught afew 17 and 18 inchers also had a 28 incher, 3 25 inchers and a 22 incher. Using red glow stop signs and frozen shiners. Border Bait has lots of live and frozen shiners. Happy Holidays and good luck fishing, going back up tomarrow the 26Th. Hoping the fish are still in the shallows.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280

20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.

Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
