2020 Lake of the Woods Fishing Reports & Info

Recommended Posts

We fished on both Saturday and Sunday just outside of Morris Gap in 16-17 feet and the fishing was actually quite good for us. We got lots of saugers mixed in with some decent walleyes. Two of us got a nice sized limit of walleyes and saugers on Saturday in about 2 1/2 hours and on Sunday we caught and released quite a few fish until we quite fishing around 12:30 to head home. We marked many numbers of baitfish and larger fish all the way from west of Morris Point to Lighthouse Gap on both days.

We did try pulling cranks for a bit to hopefully catch something large but without success so we started jigging where we were marking lots of fish that we thought were walleyes. We released a number of slots both on Saturday and Sunday and a couple of 5 lbers were the largest we released. The action wasn't like it was in the summer but we didn't expect it to be. I'd call it good fishing.

I didn't really notice a problem with water clarity.

Fishing Report 12-2-10: Today should be mostly cloudy, high around 15F with winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight should be partly cloudy early with increasing clouds overnight, low -2F with winds light and variable. Tomorrow should be cloudy, high near 20F with winds SE at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night should be cloudy during the evening a few snow showers developing late, low 9F with winds ENE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 30% chance of snow. Saturday we should have a few snow showers, highs in the upper teens and lows in the mid single digits. Sunday should be mostly cloudy, highs in the mid teens and lows in the low single digits. Monday there should be clouds giving way to sun, highs in the mid teens and lows in the upper single digits. The report isn’t the report I wanted to give, but like I always say, “it is what it is”. I just got of the phone with Al with Morris Point and he said that they will not be letting anyone on the lake from their location till at least after the weekend, and if you can’t go out of Morris Point you’re not fishing on the big body of water. He said that he will go out there today and check conditions again, but he stated that there is heavy snow on the ice and he’s going to take great caution. He also said that after the weekend if it’s safe maybe next Tuesday or Wednesday that he will start dragging a trail and he thinks that sleds and 4-Wheelers will be able to get out there and start fishing. But, there also might be a possibility because of the heavy snow that fishermen might only be able to walk out there…I will find out the skinny and let you know when it happens. We do have Northern fisherman fishing Tip-Ups and spearing in Four Mile Bay and I guess they are driving sleds out there, drilling holes, or walking to a spear house and fishing away. By the way, just as the fisherman were slamming the Walleyes a few days prior to the heavy snowfall the Northern fisherman are slamming the “Big Slimmers” in the bay. I still recommend extreme caution after the recent snow fall. The ice wasn’t that thick and with the heavy snow it has weighted it down and made it unsafe. What we need now is for much colder temperatures to freeze the ice through the snow that’s acting as insulation and not freezing the ice as quickly, possibly leaving many wet slushy areas on the ice. If you do take a sled out onto Four Mile Bay and start Tip-Up fishing, be sure to have some big bait, the big Northern Pike love them big, and once again be very safe. I will keep you all informed as to what’s happening on “The Worlds Best Hard Water Fishery”, Lake of the Woods. It will happen soon enough, so keep checking out the report for the latest news. So how come your report differs from Brien Ney's Report? He claims that you can get over pine off adrians road and once over pine there is good ice and no snow?

I just got my report first hand from Al with Morris Point this morning. How long ago was Brian's Report? We just got slammed with about 10 inches of snow the past 2 days on 3 to 5 inches of not to good of ice, which would change everything. I'm sure you can fish out there if you want to take your life into your hands, but we are erroring on the side of safety right now. I have seen a couple guys walking out there, but this is just a few guys. Like I said we error on the side of caution. I will stop in and talk to Brian personally and see what he has to say.

Just be safe and happy fishing!

Ok, I just got off the phone with Brian at Adrians and he said that as of this morning he did mark a trail from the Adrians Road (right in front of the Wigwam) to Pine Island and there is 6-1/2 inches out on the lake after you get through some rough stuff. He also said there were about 8 portables out there this morning, but to still cross the bay with much caution (3 - 5 inches with snow on top). He said that if you have sleds you'll be able to get there through the bay, but not from Morris. I hope this clears things up, and we hope to see everyone up here within the next few weeks. Be Safe and God Bless!

Not to be rude, but if you would have read the posts in the forum from brian you would have seen they are all in the past few days. I see since your original post you have talked to him and cleared things up. which I appreciate. Thanks! It was just kind of weird seeing 2 different reports from similar spots on the lake. (although i can understand some of the issues at Morris Point. They had alot of rough ice out in front of their place as of last week.

LOW Fishing Report 12-4-10: Today we will have snow showers tapering to some flurries this afternoon, high 18F with winds NW at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 30% chance of snow. Tonight should be cloudy, low 7F with winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow should be mostly cloudy with snow flurries possible in the afternoon, high around 15F with winds WNW at 5 to 10 mph. Tomorrow night should be mainly cloudy, low 3F with winds N at 5 to 10 mph. Monday we should have clouds giving way to sun, highs in the low teens and lows 2 to -2F. Tuesday we should see considerable cloudiness, highs in the upper teens and lows in the low single digits. Wednesday we should see considerable cloudiness, highs in the low teens and lows in the low single digits. As of this morning Al with Morris Point is allowing snowmobiles and 4-wheelers with portables ONLY off of Morris Point’s Ice Road. The same goes for Adrian’s Ice Road (snowmobiles and 4-wheelers only), which is right in front of the Wigwam. NO WHEEL HOUSES quite yet, there was an eager beaver yesterday that tried to press his luck and put his wheel house right in the drink in Four Mile Bay…when will people learn! I know everyone is in a hurry to beat up on the fish, but keep your pants on and we’ll get there very soon…safety first always! The people that are currently fishing on the lake are in 18 – 22 feet of water and having some consistent success. Yesterday evening, I was sharing a few stories with a couple guys in the fish cleaning house, and they said that they where out from Lighthouse Gap and there was about 8-1/2 inches of ice where they were fishing. They also said that because of the wind we had last week, about a 20 foot wall of snow blew into Lighthouse Gap…that’s crazy! There are most defiantly more Saugers being caught than Walleyes right now, but I’m sure that will change in the next few days as more people are exploring their favorite fishing holes west of Pine Island. As of today we plan on brining our permanent houses out to the lake on Monday or Tuesday, and we’ll be fishing on Wednesday or Thursday for sure. I have yet to get out there and drill a hole and wet a line; I’m giving it a few more days to harden up just a tad bit more. I will keep you all informed as to what’s happening on “The Worlds Best Hard Water Fishery”, Lake of the Woods. It will happen soon enough, so keep checking out the report for the latest news. Thanks for the reports JP.

Do you know how much snow is on top of the ice out in the main lake area? I'm hearing there's quite a bit of slush west of Pine toward Morris. Are you hearing the same thing out front of Pine?

Thanks

My dad, buddy and I fished this past weekend off pine. Saturday was a pretty good start to our ice season, we got a nice mix of walleye and sauger. Sunday was SLOW for us.

Saturday in 21' we had a big spurt from 10-12, then another from 1-2:30. Biggest landed was around 17", lost a few nicer fish as usual. Sunday we setup in 22' and had a slow time of it. We moved in shallower towards the west in 19' around 11am and it was dead as well. I moved back out deeper after noon. I did get a nice fat one just shy of the cut-off as we were packing it in for the day. The ice is looking nice, play it safe and have fun!

Today I was out with one of our Ice Guides and I put a little video together...this is current as of today! The lake looks great out there, but still only 4-wheelers and sleds with portables. After seeing today's conditions I would have to say that a wheeler is better to bring at this time.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day.

We had a great response to the video, so I think I will try to do this most of the time. As we get to fishing tomorrow I'll have a ton more information on what they're actually biting on. Today I heard of plenty of Saugers and 2 Walleye over 28" both with all gold stop signs.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!

ok boys,

hate to be the devils advocate here but,

heard monday night from a baudette fella in a local watering hole, that a few rigs went in the drink, and most of them were resort rigs, but not one word of this in the reports for two days.sooooo, did we break through or are the stories getting streched, or just slightly covered up. but he did have a cell phone with some pics on it of a downed rig that he passed around the pub. safety first.

Sounds "fishy" to me. I doubt the resorts are gonna cover anything up that would put people (paying clientele or potential business in the future) in peril. Sounds like typical "bar talk". "most of a few" rigs that went down were resort rigs??

I heard Sportsman's dropped a small ford ranger with plow through the ice working on their pine island crossing this past Saturday. It was in shallow water near the island.

Part of the business IMO. They aren't out to cover anything up, or worse yet, lead us over anxious fisherman into danger. Road guys on Red drop wheels through nearly every year. They also keep people out of those areas, and don't let anyone out before it's safe for the rest of us. I trust the resort owners and appreciate all their hard (understatement) work. We are their livelihood, and they'd like to keep us around to come back, IMO.

sorry for helping this get off topic- Hope we can get some fishing reports in soon. I'm hoping to provide some by next w/e. Good luck......

Today’s fishing was great early and tapered off in the afternoon, but not before Shane “Wiggles” Burk set the hook on a monster 29-1/4” Walleye, which I got on video for all to see. We were fishing in 22 – 23 feet of water in one of the Wigwam Ice Houses. The majority of fish that were caught today were Saugers, but the Walleyes are starting to move in. It was apparent to our guests whom were also having success catching the Walleyes. The hot colors out there today were Gold and Green Glow. Bait is still essential and nothing works better than an Emerald Shiner on Lake of the Woods.

Just got back yesterday (Dec 8th) from two days of fishing. I saw one ranger in water in Bostic Bay and heard two other vehicles thru at 4 mile bay. All were resort trucks dragging fish houses (you would think they would know better!), I do not think drivers even got wet as they got out before sunk.

Fishing was average, caught 22 and 25 fish each day. Biggest was 27.25" (gigantic belly), 1-23", 5- 18 to 19" all released. Caught plenty of eaters mostly walleye very few saugers.

Pink and glow were best colors. Very few caught jigging (20%) mostly on set line (80%).

May I ask what was the best bait? Fatheads, shiners, ect..... Thanks in advance!!!

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!
    • leech~~
      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
