Today should be mainly sunny, high 78F with winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Tonight should be mostly clear, low 52F with winds SSW at 5 to 10 mph. Wednesday we should see a few clouds, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the low 50s. Thursday should be mainly sunny, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Friday we should see a few clouds, highs in the upper 70s and lows in the mid 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by me, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. It looks like the lake was the big winner this weekend. People did catch plenty fish in Four Mile Bay directly southwest of the green marker in the channel, but it wasn’t quite as good as the lake. Where we were having our best success was right outside Lighthouse Gap. We started fishing in 22 feet of water, but by the end of the days found ourselves fishing in 27-29 feet. The Walleyes started moving out because of heavy fishing concentration in the 22-24 foot range. We were anchored and jigging all weekend, but I did see some people drifting and still pulling in some fish. On Sunday we had a little less wind than on Saturday and it seemed to be that when the wind picked up we started to catch the Walleyes…there’s something to be said about a “Walleye Chop”. If you plan on anchoring on the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold, Red, and Chartreuse/Gold) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend. You can purchase your Jigs and Frozen Shiners from the same place that I get them from, Log Cabin Bait, which is about ¾ of a mile south of the Wigwam on 172. I hope to see you all up here, but if you can’t make it, keep checking out the fishing report…I’ll give you all the hard facts as soon as I find out where they’re hiding next. Good luck and Happy Fishing to all! Thanks for fishing with us and visiting with us at the Wigwam Resort on Lake of the Woods.

Happy Fishing to all, and to all a good day!

Can someone specify where Lighthouse Gap is? I will be going up on Friday for a few days of fishing and will be staying at Cyrus Resort. I know the fourmile bay and pine island areas but not sure where the gap is.

Thanks!

Lighthouse gap is the east gap of pine island and Morris gap is the west gap of pine island.

Good luck to all at the walleye classic opener!

Today we should have mainly sunny sky, high 73F with winds W at 10 to 20 mph. Tonight we should have clear skies, low 47F with winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Thursday we should have sunshine, high 72F with winds NNE at 5 to 10 mph. Friday we should see a few clouds, highs in the low 70s and lows in the upper 40s. Saturday we should have a mix of sun and clouds, highs in the low 80s and lows in the mid 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by me, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. Thirty 26 - 30’ on the US/Canadian border should be the place to start your day. With the heavy rain and winds we had a few days ago, the lake has been turned up a bit, but the bite is still good. Frozen Shiners and Chubs can be used with similar results. A “Walleye Chop” helps considerably, but with a light wind, we’ve still been having success. The best method has been anchoring and jigging, so if you plan on anchoring in the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold, Red/Black, and Chartreuse/Gold) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend. You can purchase your Jigs and Frozen Shiners from the same place that I get them from, Log Cabin Bait, which is about ¾ of a mile south of the Wigwam on 172. Well since no one else is posting here, I figured I would throw in my report. We attempted to fish Friday but the storms wouldn't go away. Finally got out around 700 pm and managed one keeper and one throwback. Fished saturday in 30 fow as Log Cabin bait suggested and had our 12 keeper walleye in 2 hours vertical jigging with white and pink 3/8 ouch jigs. Couldn't buy a keeper sauger. Decided to let the dogs run on Pine Island for a bit and then went back out of Morris Pt gap and decided to drop the down riggers. Caught many more fish but no saugers. Fished Sunday morning for about an hour and a half in 30 fow again just west of the border. I couldn't keep my white jig on the bottom. Doubled up frozen shiners were hit by fish as soon as they hit the bottom. Didn't have any stinger hooks with so I missed a ton of fish. We had two 21's that were released. Once the front came through, the fish shut off. All in all, still beats working!! Lots of boats out there on Sat. At one point there were over 150. Lots of the charters were in the area too. That is always a good sign. Can't wait to get back, it may not be until after 7/17 though...Good luck everyone!!

6-3-10 I hope everyone had a fabulous Memorial Day Weekend. For all those lucky people who had the opportunity to fish Lake of the Woods this weekend were not let down. The “Walleye Factory” produced mind blowing quantities of Walleye, along with a hearty side of size. Just in my boat in three days we caught 25 over 20 inches…the largest being 28 ½ inches, which was caught by an excited 10 year old from New Richmond Wisconsin, Greg Weninger. Congratulations on the great catch! I think we might just have another future Lake of the Woods regular on our hands after this weekend. If you have the opportunity to fish Lake of the Woods, don’t miss out!

Last Thursday and Friday afternoons I had the distinguished pleasure of fishing with a few gentlemen from the Twin Cities area, brothers Pat and Mike Carr. The first day was pretty awesome from start to finish. We started off about ½ mile west of the US/Canadian border in 31 foot of water. The fishing was fantastic and the action was steady. There wasn’t a break for more than 2 minutes without a bite, which kept us extremely busy throughout the morning. As the afternoon approached we decided to head up to Knights Reefs to give them a shot. For the first 2 hours the fishing was awesome, but the afternoon got very calm, and as if the light switch was shut off the fish stopped biting. There is surly something to be said about a Lake of the Woods “Walleye Chop”. Day two wasn’t so nice…the weather that is. We tried to go out twice and both times the winds switched and storms returned, which didn’t allow us to fish all day. The Carr’s weren’t at all disappointed though, they said that the first day was awesome enough. Well thanks guys…hope to see you back soon.

Today we should have plentiful sunshine, high 76F with winds light and variable. Tomorrow night should be partly cloudy in the evening with increasing clouds with periods of showers after midnight, low 54F with winds light and variable…there will be a 50% chance of rain. Friday there will showers and thundershowers likely, high 71F with winds SE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 60% chance of rain. Saturday we should have showers, maybe a rumble of thunder, highs in the low 70s and lows in the low 50s. Sunday we should have showers, maybe a rumble of thunder, highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 50s. Today’s fishing report will be provided by myself, Tom Briggs, Billy “The Sniper” Kloos, and Kevin “Tall Tale“ Olmstead. 30’- 32 feet on the US/Canadian border should be the place to start your day. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold & Chartreuse/Orange) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend and week. Tom headed up to the 9 footer today and had great results also with the same method, lures and bait. Fished out of Arnesen's on the 4th-6th. Pretty good bite going on, seems like when the wind died down so did the bite. Covered a fair amount of water on Saturday from Gull Rock to Archies to 12 mile to Elm Point and Whiskey Flats. Found fish at all areas, mostly 26-31 ft, jigging and pulling/drifting bottom bouncers and spinners. Even pulled some Lead and Glass Raps on the south side of 12 mile and hit'em pretty good.

The Fish Flies have started there hatch and are starting to swarm the main land, which isn’t to good for fishing. We anticipate this to last for the next few days until they start dying off. So where I’m going with this is, the bite maybe a little slow this week because of the Fish Flies.

This weekend 31’- 32’ feet on the US/Canadian border was the place to be…it was on fire! I have never caught so many big fish at one time in my life…Lake of the Woods baby, Lake of the Woods. Frozen Shiners and Chubs can be used with similar results out there right now, but I still prefer the frozen Shiners. A “Walleye Chop” helps considerably, but with a light wind, we’ve still been having success.

The best method has been anchoring and jigging, so if you plan on anchoring in the big lake, the best type of anchor to use is a spike anchor with at least 100’ of rope. 3/8 oz Jigs (Pink/Gold & Chartreuse/Green) with frozen shiners were the golden tickets this weekend and week.

Tonight we should have partly cloudy skies, low 44F with winds NW at 10 to 15 mph. Tomorrow should be cloudy with occasional showers for the afternoon, high 67F with winds ESE at 5 to 10 mph…there will be a 50% chance of rain. Tomorrow night we should have rain showers in the evening will evolve into a more steady rain overnight, low 53F with winds E at 10 to 20 mph…there will be a 70% chance of rain. Friday we should have showers, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s. Saturday we should have a few showers, highs in the upper 60s and lows in the low 50s. Sunday we should have plenty of sun, highs in the mid 60s and lows in the low 50s.

My father, son, and I fished out of Zippel Bay resort June 1-June 7. June 1-4 saw tons of eyes. We had 2 days where, conservatively, we caught 150-200 per day between us. My son counted one day and quit at 56 (June 4)--not even our best day. Probably 100 or so fish in the slot with 6 or 7 that were 27 and 28 inches. Casting spinner baits in 4 mile bay looking for Northerns my father caught a 24 inch eye in 4 feet of water in the reeds!

Sunday winds cooled the bite, but on that windy morning (5 hours) my father and I caught 25 with one at 28. Son caught the same amount by himself in his boat. Sunday night was sunny and calm and really stopped the fish. Left with our 4 eyes each and 2 saugers each--15 inch saugers but skinny.

Our best fishing was west of Zippel in 30 feet a bit to the west of Twin trees or Two trees just before The Fields. Used fatheads on jigs (chartreuse, green or yellow) as well as frozen shiners. On the terrific days we caught them on anything--crawlers, leeches, etc. Son got a few nice ones trolling in 16-20 feet off the Fields as well. When lazy a slip bobber worked well.

Good luck!!

May be a little far from Zipple but I have had some pretty good luck fishing the mud near some of the Rocky Pt Reefs. Glow Red 3/8 oz Jig and a minnow, and 34'has been my best depth. I'm gonna give her a shot again tomorrow, hopefully the rain stays away and she dont blow too hard.

I was up last weekend and we fished in 31' out from the Gap just west of the Canadian Borader. Anchored and Jiged with a frozen shinner. If you are trailering a boat it would be worth it for you to come over to Wheelers and leave from there. If you have a good sized boat, head over from Zipple to the group at 31'...Approx 075 degrees from Zipple.. Good luck the kids will catch fish...

That area Kaz mentioned is not far from Zippel. It is easy to find and

there will be boats in the area. This is as sure a thing as you will ever

get in fishing. Enough fish to keep a young one interested.

Good Luck and have fun.

There was just a report in here a day or 2 ago. It was a great report and it sounded like they were fishing in the Zipple area, twin trees and the feild area. I think it was in the lake of the woods fishing report thread. Maybe worth checking some of the other threads in LOW section.

good luck!!

Boar,

Take a look at my report further up. We had terrific fishing West of Zippel in 30 ft just before the Fields. When they were stupid we cought them on anything--leeches, slip bobber,s fat heads, frozen shiners, jigs etc. trolling worked for my son shallow in 20 feet or so with diving plugs.

have fun,

Wahoo

we caught them East as well--just before Morris Gap in 25-27, but best was west.

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!
    • leech~~
      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
