Pool 2 or Pool 3 Question

Recommended Posts

Hi everyone. Iim new to the Mississippi and here is the area I would like to fish. I would like to fish the backwater areas close to Cottage Grove by highway 61. Is this considered pool 2 or pool 3? Does anyone know any access points where I can launch my boat? Also I have a 18.5 foot boat with a 150 that is a deep v type boat. Will I be ok on this part of the river? I have never been on the Mississippi before and am hesitant on going out there for my first time. Any tips would be greatly appreciated. thanks!

By Cottage Grove and 61 is still Pool 2.

Where 61 cross’s over the Miss by Hastings is Pool 3. The lock and dam that separates the pools is just up stream of the 61 bridge.

I thought they have a Boat launch in Hastings. You would have to go threw the lock and dam though, to get to the waters you want to fish.

It is easy once you live threw it, with out having a heart attack! grin.gif

That or I know you can find one in Grey Cloud and go south. Where it is I am not sure of, but I someone should chime in.

I haven't been to that part of the river as I just hit out of Lillydale for the first time yesterday. The river always intimidated me. What I did was stay in the middle going up stream trying to stay in the deeper water and watched for deadheads as we went. We had a good ride up. Not really intimidated by it anymore, but you have have respect for that river.

I went one last time yesterday afternoon with a friend for a few hours.  We each got one, and we each missed one.  Raised about 20 birds at four spots, plus one deer.  Unfortunately, the season is now over.   It was a superb season though.  Second best season I've had with this dog.  She just had her 13th season.  I hope she can do it again next year.   I'll be sorting my sock drawer now for a couple months...

He can have this one!  Haha!  We shoulda maybe stayed on top in 14 but we could see the bottom so clearly and it was shallower than we really wanted.  The quick deeper water check yielded perch and pike right away, so we moved.  Caught plenty before dark, now pretty quiet.   I have a hunch the bay WILL fish shallower than the main lake we’re used to.   16 inches of good ice out here.

Thanks for reminding me to make sure that one is in the fish house!  It’s tradition that we watch that on the first trip every year.

We (my wife mainly) are monitoring the pages of the big three pretty closely.  Not Mille Lacs though - we don’t go to the big one closest to us - haha.   We’re still shooting for Winnie tomorrow but might have to shift to Red if we can’t get out there yet.  Spent all day going through gear.  Bought a ton of bait.  Sharpened my spears and saw.  Way too much gear.   I also found out I forgot 1 ciscoe in my long rod box from my Ontario trip in March. Gaaggggghhh.  Everything out, washed with Dawn in hot water and set out to dry.  Still stinks but not like a punch in the nose stink.  And like me, after a long weekend fishing, after awhile I hardly notice the smell anyway.
