Getting serious about pool 6

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

Great site! Glad I found it, with all the reading I've done it is obvious that this is the place to get the best info. I spent the end of last year screwing around on pool 6 with my 14' 10 horse mainly around PI and right by the bridge to WI from Winona. This year I'm getting serious about my fishing and just got a new 17' tracker pro team along with some new gear. I mainly spend my time chasing bass and casting for northern. Im planning on heading out this weekend and just curious where would be some good areas to fish on pool 6 or even the Winona area. Seems like with the dirty water and fast current I should stay out of the main channel. From what I've read the walleye are what I should go after stayin in the eddies fishing 8-10foot range. Im just looking for any other info/advice. I would love to go after some bass but I think its too early still. Thanks in advance!

First of all let me welcome you to HSO and you will find answers these guys and gals here are the best.I fish mainly walleyes on pool 6 and have come across a few shallow areas out there that had a few northerns in them a week or so ago but they may have spawned and move on but maybe not.I would say try around the shallow out of current areas with deeper water close by where we got a few it was in little bays and even a few in the eddies. As far as bass well i dont target them but maybe someone in the area will chim in and give you some imfo.I would also say there are lots of backwaters that never get fished dont be affaid to be the first to try them you just might be in for a great day on the water.I was out earlyer this week did ok on the eye's look for eddies with very little current if any. Also you mentioned PI your allready in great area there.Hope this helps.

Thanks for the welcome, hopefully someone will chime in soon about bass. I did a lot of top water last year but this year I'm going to use more tubes and jigs.

Prairie Island, they have a camp ground and a couple boat landings (one above the spill way, and one below) and I believe the winona marina is at the end. Here is a map.. The black line I made is the spill way/dam(on the wi side)and the blue dots are the boat landings. I fished this area for bass and sunnys all last summer with great results.

Thanks for clearing that up, I camp there all the time.. I just normally refered to it as deer park for some reason and I guess I didn't pick up on the abreviation of Prairie Island.

Look forward to hitting it up in a few weeks when school's out.

Can't beat getting out in the boat on a nice warm day, when the fish are bitting that's just a bonus to me!!
