440 is south central MN. New Ulm area.(mostly riverbottom land by Fairfax) Private land and only 1 other hunter using the land for the opening week, so they have 4 weeks with hopefully? no pressure.

Hooks, those are nice prizes.

Huntingmaxima, glad you found us. Good luck in So. Dak. Where are you going? I spend a week in the black hills every fall.

Sabo, happy to have you with us too. Sounds like you got a good spot.

Cooter. You taking some rookies out who will get the first shots? Won't hold that against you. I did that last year, took a first timer. Five minutes into his first day-a 25 pounder! I shamed him into taking it to a taxidermist. 25 years of turkey hunting and I have never shot one that big.

Good luck to all, stay in touch.

I meant more the after-hunt cheeser bar stories makes your kill #'s go up grin.gif. Once had a guy at the Woodshed (Bloodshed) in Hager City tell me about a 6 foot turkey he shot. I think Cooter's heard all my stupid WI stories by now.

I've hunted WI a handful of times. Mostly up and down the river across from Red Wing near Plum City. Two tags, as well as another opportunity vs. MN definitely makes the kills go up! Agreed.

DD and I are hunting MN together, maybe WI? I'll be with a bow in MN and the WI season we drew overlaps. Decisions, decisions. Both if at all possible!

Was down at the river a few times. Mike and I had been doing pretty well. Check out the pics in the "Big Eye's of 2008 post".

Ahhh, so he's one of THOSE guys who'll do anything to get his picture in the paper? (or on the web?)

I'm starting to get a clearer picture of jnelson now...

That's the best part; I'll concede that 'rak is a better walleye guy than myself, but that night I dinged the biggest. Of course he goes out two nights later and gets a bigger one.....but I won that night!!!

Taking pictures with other people's game should be against some man-rule. Man-foul or something. grin.gif

We have a first time turkey hunter in our group so he pulls trigger first - although I'm not sure if he'll get out of school for Thurs or Fri. Thus I'll likely have Wed morning to myself. Plus, his dad(the third in our group) is capable so those two can hunt together and I can go alone....though I want to help and be there when he gets his first bird. Have to git er done Wed!

Just got back from SD. Never fire a shot. I passed on guite a few jakes, but my brothers were on the lucky ranch this year. We came back w/our birds but I struck out. The birds are still in big flocks, needs to warm up to get those hens going.

huntingmax, it's tough hunting out west when the birds are all flocked up. Still nice to get out in the woods though huh?

Better luck next week.

Huntingmaxima,

If I remember correctly you still have another chance here. Even though you didn't come home with one, it still sounds like a good time. Good luck for round 2!

I think that maxima has another "shot" here in MN. Then I have May 1-5. Was there someone else that had "D" as well?

Can't wait to see the pics and score sheet Monday! I should be hunting right now....my uncles is just infested with turkeys at the moment. His brother-in-law got one right away yesterday and just sat in the blind watching. He said it was jakes and tom 3:1 over hens and claims he saw half a dozen hens. My old man hunts there next week.

I have a great area but due to the distance and gas prices won't get much scouting in. I can't guarantee anything although I've been 100% for years. No offense if anyone chooses, but I go home empty before I yank one on a jake. I will guarantee I'm gonna giver er hard! If we had next year's zone structure in place this year I'd be more confident. Good luck maxima!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
