i still don't know where this red barn is?!

If you have a GPS the Red Barn landing is here.

N 46-07-779

W 93-00-783

Take it easy going down the road on that side of the lake as it is always icy! frown

Marshall, I'll drop you an email. I was thinking of heading up early about 6:00am or so. Maybe I could just swing by your place and we could follow each other or maybe just meet at the gas station at the Sandstone exit off 35W?

Hey Reinhard1. Nice meeting you today. I was talking to mabr and we are going to bring the small grill along and do some grilling at lunch on Sat. So, not sure how much Sausage you have but maybe you can bring some and I will bring up some Johnson villes or some thing to share as well. Not sure who all is going to make it up to Grindstone sat, but we are going to meet up by the Red Barn landing and do some lunch and a little BSing before heading back out fishing. See you up there. wink

I am planing on bringing up my two burner colmen stove for lunch time, not sure what I will be cooking! Should we say noon for lunch time by the red barn? I am so excited as this will be my first trout outing this year.

Yes, lets meet at 12:00pm noon at the parking area by the barn. Make sure you have some different kind of baits from waxes to minnows as you never know what your going to catch there. wink

great. i'll be interested how they did. always some guy's there during the ice season. there is a shallow shelf that comes off from that west shore and then drops off quickly. i have also fished the south shore at the drop off and deeper. well i guess i've fished every foot of that lake over the last 40 years. good luck.

I was wondering during the winter are there any other accesses on grindstone that you can drive a pick up out of, and what is the current ice condition? Trying to head up this weekend to find some rainbows/Browns if anyone has any advice on what type of jigs/bait I didnt fair to well last time.

Is there a place on south west corner you can go out of, or do you have to come from the main access on the north end.

i think most of us will be there all day. smelt will be found all over but i tend to notice more in water at least 70 ft deep or more. that's just me. you will see them suspended at those depth 25 to 30 ft down as a rule. the north east bay is a good spot to try. there is usualy a trail of truck tracks heading that way and a lot of holes punched close together and that would be the area. good luck.

If I remember correctly, there is a drive on spot on the south end of the lake, right off the main road.

there is some good info on this thread if you look over it. the public access on the north end and by the red barn are the two places i get on the lake. people drive on the south west end but i'm not sure if that property belongs to the bible camp or not. that is were the bible camp puts their dock out in the summer. people do drive out from there but it is a fairly steep hill there. if i fish that end i usualy park on the parking area on the road and walk out with my gear. minnows, spoons with minnow heads or waxies or eurolarva. fish shallow for rainbows [less than 10 ft] or just under the top 10 ft in deeper water. good luck.

wow i never thought i'd see the day when people piled onto this lake in such mass other than opener. there arent that many fish to be had. kinda like givin up a little metro hot spot. once someone gets on the topic the fish dissappear.

I usually find the smelt school over deep water anywhere 60'+. I had on occassion found them in 30' zone when I couldn't find them in deep water. They like to hang out mostly in that 30' zone.

There is a campground that owns a little strip of land on the southwest end and some times you can drive on there but it is a bit of a hill there. Some years they have it posted and some times put up a snowfence. I did see a guy in a truck go in from there two weeks ago when I was up. The ice was about 14" or so two weeks ago and people were driving trucks around, not sure what the snow is like this week but it wasn't to bad then.

so this is the only lake that has a thread? there are about 8 of us that i know of in our little get together. this thread has existed for quite awhile. i have fished it for 40 years and never seen much pressure on it except on ice opener and open water trout opener. even then there is no mass as you describe. this is not a secret lake and trout are put and take. ask anyone who has fished it and ask them how many times they have filled out their limit. call the dnr and ask them how much this lake gets fished year around. the boat landing in mid summer on is very shallow and difficult to access for boats of any size. there are get toghethers all over the place and no harm is done. why dont you come on out and fish, there will be no "mass" to worry about. good luck.

Dude relax, it's just a few guys on here meeting up to go do a little fishing. For some it's their first time on the lake or fishing Trout so not like we are going to clean out a lake that were just learning where to fish. It's not like it's going to be the "Burntside Bash" or anything!! grin

just a couple of pages back you asked me for advice on this lake, then you and your friends [small mass] went out and smoked them trout as you said in your post. so i hope you dont feel guilty for telling anyone that you had some luck. look this lake will not get fished out, as a matter of fact the fishing is getting better all around as far as i'm concerned. you wanted to get toghether some time and fish so come on out on saturday. good luck.

yea i went with two guys and i was the only one who caught any fish. thats no mass in my book. i said i caught fish but like H-E-double toothpicks would i give out my spots to a bunch of randoms. i have fished with my buddies for years and know that they wont give up my hotspots. a group of a bunch of random people chances are they wont all be as tight lipped if they get on the fish. i hope yo all do get some and have fun but crowds are not the way to go while trout fishing. 2c

I'd hate to see this lake get to crowded cause of an internet posting... Good luck tomorrow guys and if you have success be responsible and do what you would want others to do and dont advertise it all over just want things to last even if it is put and take lake. They can only put so much in and eventually the pressure will catch up

On the South Shore...  The focus for many this week is the ongoing deer hunting season which is a big tradition in these parts, even for avid walleye anglers.  There were some that either already harvested their deer or are more into catching fall walleyes than hunting.     Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.  Cold weather is in the forecast in the upcoming days and weeks so that is also getting many excited. The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     Vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is catching most of the walleyes, saugers and jumbo perch.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well, but most reports are talking about good numbers of eaters.    Jumbo perch are coming in good numbers this fall which will serve ice anglers well.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      There are good numbers of walleyes and saugers across the south shore which is setting up nicely for early ice.   On the Rainy River...  There continues to be good numbers of shiners in the river, and consequently, there are good walleyes in the river as well.     Walleyes along with saugers, pike and some sturgeon are coming in up and down the river.  Most walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.   Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the key. Some anglers are also still slow trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  As temps are getting colder, most are in the woods hunting and not fall fishing, however, for those who bundle up, fishing continues to be excellent.     A nice mixed bag with walleyes, saugers, perch, pike and crappies being caught. Very good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

I hunt in the rifle zone so I don't have a need to use a shotgun to hunt deer, but I would be looking at this if there was ever a need to.   There could be state legislation introduced next summer that eliminates the shotgun zone completely.  It has bipartisan support.  Wisconsin removed theirs years ago and MN is usually later to follow.  They've tried to pass it more than once and it came up just short both times.  Probably just a matter of time.

      Oh, h e l l no!

      Screw that, here's whatch need!  😆   Power-Shok Rifled Slug 10 Gauge 766 Grain Grain Weight: 766 Shotshell Length: 3-1/2in / 89mm Muzzle Velocity: 1280
    • Wanderer
20 ga has become a real popular deer round in the last 5 or so years.  The rifled barrels are zinging those sabot slugs with rifle like accuracy out to 100 yards easily.  Some go so far as dialing in for a 200 yard shot but really, by 150 they’re falling off pretty low.   I have a single shot Ultraslug in 20 ga that shoots really well at 100 yards.  Most everyone I know that has bought a slug gun lately has gotten the Savage 220 in 20ga.  Problem can be finding the shells you want.
    • leech~~
My son always bugs me about getting a nice light over-under 20ga for grouse hunting.  I say Heck no, I'm getting a 3 1/2" 10ga so I can put as much lead in the air that I can!!     So, I'm keeping my 12ga.
    • 11-87
That’s almost exactly what I was thinking.  Have slug barrels for both   One for turkey and one for deer.      I have a 20ga mosseberg as well. (Combo came with the scope but never used.   I always liked the 12 better
    • leech~~
Wanderer is right on the money and covered it well.  I was wondering too if you had a slug barrel for one of your guns?  If so you could make that your slug gun with a scope, and the other your turkey gun with the Red dot.  As you can afford it.
    • Wanderer
Kinda depends on if you want magnification or quick target acquisition.   More magnification options and better accuracy with a scope.  You get what you pay for too so get comfortable with a budget for one.  Tasco and Bushnell work but I find they lose their zero easier, have low contrast and don’t gather light well in low light conditions.  That said, I’m still using one I haven’t replaced yet.  Vortex has been the hot brand for the past several years for bang for the buck.  Good products.  Nothing beats Swarovski though.  Huge dough for those.  Burris is another decent option.   There are some specific models for shotgun/slug hunting in the economy brands and bullet drop compensation (BDC) reticles.  Based on experience I’d recommend not falling for that marketing ploy.   Red dots are usually lower magnification and easier to get on target.  Reasonably accurate but don’t do well with definition, like searching the brush for your target.  I put a HAWKE red dot on a .22 for squirrels and it’s been good.  For turkey, that’s probably the route I’d go.     If your slug shots are normally not too far and too brushy, I’d think a red dot could work there too if you’re only buying 1 scope.  You’ll be better off dimming the reticle to the lowest setting you can easily use to not over shine the target and get a finer aim point.   If you don’t have a slug barrel, you might appreciate one of those.  I had a browning with a smoothbore slug barrel that shot Brenneke 2-3/4 inch well.  The 11-87 would well fitted with a cantelever rifled barrel.
    • 11-87
Looking for recommendations on scope or red dot    I basically hunt turkey and whitetail, live in southern MN. So it’s all deer/ shotgun    looking to add a scope/ red dot as my eyes don’t work like they used to to with the open sights.    my gun options are 11/87 12. Browning BPS 12    not looking for the most expensive or the cheapest    pros and cons of one over the other
