I am on the bubble, won't know for a couple of hours if I will spend the rest of the week in Wisconsin or home? I will keep reading and posting as things become more clear. I'm 34 and like Miller Lite! I have a Fish Trap II and a 6x8 portable to offer up. (If I'm around)

A night during the week would work best for me. This weekend I will be at the Muskie Expo Saturday Morning and Tackle Swap Saturday Night.

I'll keep looking for what comes together.

Tonka Boy I know you're down for when ever except for Sunday.

Who's down for Thursday? Walleyes29 I see that day doesn't work for you. How about Fri Sat? Anyone else?

Also, where to go? Tonka Boy this is your call, Spring Park??

MGD - Miller Lite?? I'll need to hold off till the weekend to drink otherwise I'm game.

So who's down for Thursday after work? I can be there by 6 maybe a little sooner. Sat I'm thinking afternoon through after dusk.

Now that you truck is broken, you need my help! I see how it is. First it's the 4 wheeler, than you want to use the Vexilar, next it was my fishing rods and now you want me to drive you out and show you where the fish are! Sheesh wink.gif

I need to start charging.
I like Thursdays. Just one step away from the weekend.

Figures, Wife has to go out tomorrow and help a friend learn some belly dance stuff. A free pass for me in other words. I'll see if I can get out thurs but I kinda doubt it. From time to time my skirt billows up over my head and the wife gets the best of me. I'll keep watching in case it happens to change to wed. or I'll do by best to get out thurs. Had a good time with tim l and look forward to meeting others. THis site is the best thing since... I don't know. I have a frabill ranger twin and a frabill speedshak xl laying around. Lets get the fish on!

had my days screwed up. Was thinking today was tuesday. Anyways, chance of snow wed night and into thurs. Wednesday sunny highs in the 20's. Thursday cloudy, snow? in the 30's I believe. Somthing to keep in mind. With enough beer however, temp and weather is not as much of a concern.

who would be in for doing something next week - say an evening after work? Not sure if there is a night that we all have free - it would be cool for us all to meet up and sleigh the slabs... I'm pretty open it looks like for next week...

oh yea, I'm 30, drink Miller Lite, Fish Trap guide....

Hey Moby,
shoot me an email and we can swap numbers if your thinking of heading up to Red ([email protected])... We'll be on URL Thursday evening until mid day or possibly later Friday and then to LOW Friday into Sunday. We're going out of WW and renting a sleeper shack.. If you happen to be up at Red give me a ring and we can get together and cover some water... A friend of mine got into some 16" crappies 2 weeks ago up there and it sounds like a lot of people were doing well last weekend, so I'm hoping we find some of those slabs... I went with my dad to Anandale... No kids yet, although my wife is due in April with our first (fishing buddy on the way, hehehe)... My fishing time will be limited end of March into April, but I should be back in business by May...

Keep me posted on how you guys do this week. Doesn't look like I'll be able to get out before the trip. Next week looks open. Good luck!

hey walleyes29,
where did you move here from? Tonka is a great lake in the metro... We fish it for musky/walleye in the summer. I haven't done too much crappie fishing on that lake, but intend to start doing more... there are some real slabs in that lake if you can find them... hopefully we can all meet up and exchange some info. and tip a couple back (okay, tip a few back...).

Anyone fish that crappie tournament in the spring on Tonka? I've always thought about it, but never entered. Seems like it is always a real nice fish that wins that tournament.

I have always thought about fishing the contest but never have either. Mabey this year. Depending on weather and location. I only have a lund 12'but wide model so not too bad, with a 15 horse. It's in great cond but small. put the vex in and friend just gave me a humminbird 100 for it. Have had it in grays and wayzata on tonka but do not know how or where to fish at all. I have 2 seats so am always looking to find someone to teach me a thing or two. In the past don't usually have a problem getting out Saturday mornings and or Sunday mornings. Like to go as early as possible. I'm in the same situation on open water as ice-I love to fish and have fished for years on 1 or 2 lakes with minimal sucess. No one in my family fished but me. Only caught a couple of eyes, smaller crappies and lots of northerns over the years. In other words this is an invitation for off ice fishing as well to you guys if you don't mind a small boat.
Lets get out and fish this week!! (and next...etc)

Woo Hoo! Well fellas it looks like ldwsmith, Tonka Boy and I will be going out on Thursday night.

I would like to get out on Sat too, and possibly Friday as I have that day off, but will be spending the morning downtown fighting my traffic ticket.

Any ways, this goes out to Tonka Boy to add to your theme song collection.

It looks like it is settled. We'll be heading out to Goose Island Thursday evening. We'll be out around dark, fishing until our arms cannot lift another fish!

If any others would like to join in on the fun, you're welcome to stop by.

By the way, the crappie contest is a blast. Fletcher's gets to be a little nuts, but fun none the less. If you plan on entering the contest, make sure to be at the launch EARLY!

See you on the ice!

Iceman12,

The crappie contest is usually on a Saturday, mid-April. I looked at both the Gander Mountain site and the Fletcher's site and neither mentioned the contest yet. I would expect you'll see some advertising soon.

The cost is roughly $3/person.

Hey tim
I know you like the sunnies. My neighbor was telling me last night that he used to fish on tonka and get a lot of sunnies. He said he fished Grays Bay near where there used to be a bait shop. Said where it drops off to 26'. I made him show me on the lake map. I'll show ya next time we meet up. I don't know how to describe it as I don't have my map book here.
I had a guy call me about my speed shak xl last night. I thought I'd ask you first as you said you may be interested. After I hear from you I will call him back.
Getting ready to head to sarah in a few minutes.

Ahh.. the Crappie Contest, I Can't wait! I had a blast last year. A mix of snow and rain hitting your face going 35 mph across the lake. What a feeling! I think I was one of few who did really well that day. My group caught about 30 crappies with 15 of them being >10.5 inches. Had a couple next to the boat that would have placed in the top 3 but my friend was slow with the net. I earned those fish. My buddie and I pre -fished for 2 days straight, and until the last hour of the second day we hadn't caught a crappie. That last hour was all we needed though. Can't Wait. I already got the open water fever!!

On the South Shore...  It's deer hunting season in MN and not many are out fishing.  Those that are fishing are taking advantage of the unseasonably warm weather and excellent walleye and sauger bite that is happening across the lake.   The best depths on the south end of LOW are 22-28 feet of water.     No surprise, vertical jigging with frozen emerald shiners is the program for most anglers.  Anglers are going through a lot of frozen emerald shiners as the walleyes and saugers are all mixed sizes.  You will catch small ones and your eaters.  Depending upon where on the lake you are fishing, some slots and big trophies are in the mix as well.    Anglers are also reporting very good numbers of jumbo perch this fall.  Watch out for an occasional pike or even lake sturgeon mixed in with the walleyes.      Good numbers of fish are staged in great spots for the upcoming ice fishing season. On the Rainy River...  Good numbers of shiners again in the river this past week. Typically, if there are shiners, there will be walleyes, and there definitely are.     Walleyes are coming from various spots from Four Mile Bay to Wheeler's Point, to Baudette all the way to Birchdale.  With so many anglers taking advantage of the deer hunting season, there are not a lot of boats on the river.      Walleyes are being caught in 10-25 feet of water in various stretches of the river.  The bait and consequently, walleyes, are moving around.  Once you find some fish, you will be rewarded. Jigging with live or frozen emerald shiners is the way to go. Some anglers are also still trolling crankbaits upstream to cover more ground and find fish. Both methods are producing solid results. Sturgeon fishing remains strong.  The catch-and-release sturgeon fishing is open into the spring when it changes to the "keep season" on April 24th. Up at the NW Angle...  For those not in the woods hunting, fall fishing continues to be excellent.  It is areas with structure holding walleyes in this part of the lake.  Points, neck-down areas with current, shoreline breaks, and transition zones from rock to mud are all productive locations for walleye right now.     A nice mixed bag with perch, pike and crappies being caught as well. Good muskie fishing with the colder water temps and shorter days.  Some big fish and some good numbers are being caught amongst the islands.  Both casting and trolling is getting it done.

Yes.  No lightning strikes in the area on Saturday and a tree was burning.  The squirrel hunters have been a nuisance this year with more activity in our area then we have ever seen.  This was the 3rd fire in the section of woods in the past 2 weeks.  Most definitely not caused by natural events.
    • leech~~
Stop, trying to make everybody feel bad that not in the woods!   😟  😆

Haha!  No… In other news: All the cell cams users that I talk with are seeing some daylight movement of adult bucks since yesterday.  No deer hunters want to be at work right now.
    • SkunkedAgain
The water temps on the west end Friday were 45 in HeadOLakes and 44 in the smaller bays.

You didn't Sluice um! 😆 I was driving 94 passed Runnings in Monticello yesterday late after noon and saw a huge, thick dark brown 8 point running alone the freeway with its tongue out.  Thinking he was after a girlfriend! 😜
