North Star Fall Walleye Classic

Recommended Posts

Posters will be being circulated very soon for this fall's tournament so keep your eyes peeled for more information or call the Wigwam Resort. Limited to 75 boats, paying $10,000 to the winner if there's a full field. Fishing will be fantastic as usual. Once again there will be a $500 bonus to the highest finishing team in a Lund boat. Don't miss out.

The sooner you get signed up the better postition you

get on the roster. First entry is the first one out each

day. This is a great event to start fishing these classics

because the fishing can be close by. Thanks to Lund for

the extra incentives.

Lets get the field of 75 teams and have the 10th NorthStar

Fall Walleye Classic the biggest and best ever.

Let's try and fill this one up.

Curt, I dropped off the posters at the radio station today.

Until they lower the cost of these, they are not going to fill. You just are not going to get local residents to pay that.

Is the entry fee vs. payout fair...yes. It's just too much for the current local economy.

Since they raised the entry about a $125 from years past and $3.00 gas it's going to be tough to get even close to filling up.

That's what I've been saying...The ones who fish it say, no the entry fee is fine, but for me it's way too much...about $200 is my limit, but then again I'm a cheapskate. I think they need to ask themselves, do they want a huge pay-out for 1st place? or a full field? I would love to try fishing one or a couple of these, but It's a tad too much for me (or my wife to let me) fish it.

What do ya'll think would be "low enough" for the locals to fish it?

This isn't just a local's tournament. North Dakota, South Dakota, Canada etc... are all represented too along with quite a few locals as well. Lots of people are talking about how expensive it is but have never actually fished or have been a part of it. I have met so many great people up there and they have become great friends of mine so that right there in itself is priceless for me. I think if you guys gave it a shot you may have a different opinion afterwards.

I'm not saying it's not fun. I'm sure it's a blast, most tournaments are, but it's still gonna cost $450 a team to enter. A $200 Tournament would be just as fun and cost less to fish...

It doesn't matter to me, I'm just stating "my point of veiw" on the situation, take it for what it's worth (probably not much), but after a couple more years of only a few entries, maybe they will lower the cost?

If it fills up, I'll be the first to admit that I'm wrong.

In 2006, they had 57 teams signed up for the fall tourney. That's a pretty darn good turnout if you ask me.

The Fall Classic always gets the most entries of the 3 anyhow I'm pretty sure. Been runnin longest, went from 333 to 450 at the last increase,, and they dropped the max teams # to 75. Folks are into this one bigtime and I don't think that 117 bucks will keep too many away who've been doing it in the past.

Can see how daunting that amount of coinage can be though for those who'd like to give it a try.

Competitive crews in this one makes it more daunting yet for sure.

Then the never know October weather, probably snow and blow this year again maybe huh!!!

The fall event draws pretty well, I dont know if it will

fill but I think it will be close. $10,000 first place

check and nice money down a ways.

The spring and summer events are the puzzle for me. At

450 bucks not everyone can or will enter but it fills up

at 50 teams. It seems real odd that 50 teams wont enter

a tournament with 7500 dollar first place money.

I think there must be another reason but I dont know what

it is.

The big time tournament anglers should all come up for

a 2 day deal with a big cash prize and reasonable entry

fee, yet they havent showed up in any great numbers either.

The word is being spread for this fall event. A big effort

is being made to get 75 teams entered and fill the field.

I know Kevin Olmstead works very hard to make this a well

run fun and competitive event. Everyone has a heck of a

time and you sure learn alot.

I understand budgets and if its not in the cards to enter

try to get away and come watch, spend some time jiggin

in the Gaps, stop at the Wigwam, watch the weigh ins

and maybe buy me drink.

If lowering the entry fee will fill the fields then I

would be in favor of it. I know that some new regs will

make running these deals more expensive next year so

the prize money would suffer. But if the roster is half

full the prize money is half.

Its a bit of a dilema but an event worth the effort.

See you all in Oct

These tourneys are well run and a blast to fish even though ive never got a check back in one ill still fish them. it seems odd the summer classic had the same # of teams as last year and the entry was cut in half so not sure about lowering the entry fee. the more yu put in the more you get back! ive talked to some guys who say the entry is to much hey its only 225 a piece, then these same guys blow $200 in the pool tab machine on the way home from the lake for 10 minutes of fun. still makes me laugh. i would think a whole weekend of tourney fishin with friends would be a way better investment to me.

Yes, this is a great tournament, along with the spring and summer ones also. Kevin and the crew do a heck of a job putting this all together and a great time is had by all.

The thing is anyone has a chance at cashing a check, look at the team that won the summer tournament, (even monkeys fall out of trees).

Lip-Ripper, have you been on the lake lately? Have not talked to you since the tournament.

This year you will probably see some pwt pros sign up because there is no more pwt tourneys after next week so they will be itchin to do some fall fishin.

I think $225 for a chance to win $10,000 is fairly reasonable. And the best part is that you get to take that chance while fishing!

Folks can drop that in the Warroad casino in a short while without probs!!! Games of chance. When I do a tourney I like to think anyways that I have to use some skill, knowledge or whatever, add confidence also, then I have better odds on a reasonable return.....With a chunk of luck.....A safer bet....Ya right!!!

Opener and the week after were good.  Not the numbers we normally get but better quality in the East End.  Not surprised on the weights for the Auto City a.  Usually for us we only catch a few slot fish but we averaged 3 a day for 10 days.  2 overs, biggest 27 inches.     Our best luck was 12-16 feet for quality.  When we went deeper we caught more but smaller.  Bass were really starting to heat up.  For me little earlier than normal.  Found some nice Bluegills the day we went after some panfish.  Dock fishing was as many as we wanted per usual.

We will be up on June 8th for the week. It will be our 13th year in a row staying on the lake.  I hope the walleye are hitting the bobbers by the time that we get there.

Those are some fine specimens. Great job

I'm quite shocked to hear that a walleye tournament is still doing a live weigh in.  Virtually every event these days around here is doing a catch, photo, and release format.   Regardless, nice work.  Congrats.

On the south end...   A great week of fishing with walleyes and saugers caught in good numbers.   The go-to presentation, again, was a jig and frozen emerald shiner.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.  Other minnows worked also, but emerald shiners are a favorite of anglers for good reason.   The Lighthouse Gap area, Morris Point Gap and just in front of Pine Island held nice fish in 17 - 21' of water.  Various schools of walleyes and saugers across the south shore.     A quarter ounce jig in gold, glow white, pink, orange, chartreuse, or a combo of these colors tipped with a minnow worked well again.   Some big pike and jumbo perch being caught by walleye anglers. On the Rainy River...  Some nice walleyes were caught on the river this weekend, although most anglers normally head to the lake.  12 - 15' of water is holding some nice fish.   Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River is closed until the keep season starts up again July 1st. Up at the NW Angle...  Some nice walleyes being caught along with a mixed bag.  12 - 25 feet of water.  Points, neck down areas and bays with warming water were holding good fish this week.    The go-to presentation was a jig and minnow as on the south shore.  A mixed bag as is common around the Angle.

Nice work!   Here's two words you hardly ever hear anyone say anymore.  "grateful and humbled"

RLG, thanks for the shout-out!     Jeff and I are still trying to wrap our heads around what happened this past weekend.  We are humbled and full of gratitude  for having won 'The Classic' for a second time.     We practiced through all the rain on Thurs and the wind on Friday and found six different spots holding big fish.  Fishing was good on both days with several 'overs' in our catch...but would it hold up for another day?   We didn't know.     On tourney day, we made a long run to our first spot where I lucked out on a 26.5"er on my second cast.  Jeff followed up with a thick 27" er a few minutes later, which turned out to be the big fish for the event at 7.26lbs.  We finished out our limit and weighed-in at 10:30 am for the welfare of the fish in our livewell.    There were some big weights in this event which would have won in most other years, but - for whatever reason - this was our day.  Everything just went our way.  Again, we are just super grateful and humbled by this success.  We also want to congratulate all the other anglers who did well and give a big 'thank you' to the tournament organizers who put on such a great event!

I had a good start to the season on opener. Fishing was slow but consistent. I had four eaters in the box by lunch dragging perch raps. Crappies were biting. I haven't been up since so don't know how things have changed since then, but I'm sure the walleye continue to migrate out into the main basins.

Let’s start this by congratulating Brianf and son for winning their second City Autoglass Walleye Classic last weekend. These guys know how to fish.  We just got to the lake for the season. Chores are almost done and I’m ready to fish.  red(new dog is more yellow)labguy

I tried starting a 2024 Lake Vermilion Fishing Report topic but it doesn't show up on this board.   Maybe somebody else knows how to do it?
