Wabasha backwaters

4 posts in this topic

How are the backwaters in the wabasha area looking? Is the ice pretty much gone yet? High water? Probably gonna be another 2 weeks before I'm down there, but just curious how things are looking now.

Most places are getting hard to get on due to the high water and now warm temps. Ice fishing will be done for the most part this weekend I believe, with the exception of the marina's and maybe Wilcox... Anything near the main channel or with a fair amount of current will not be fishable from the ice.

Yeah, I want the ice to be gone. I have the itch for some open water crappies...or in last years case, perch and largemouth bass.

Did hear of some crappies being caught up around the red wing area through the ice.

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
