I have not signed up yet, but as of now it sounds like I am going. I am planning on bringing a buddy that is not an FM'er. This will be my first ICE event!!

Hmm... a flashing strobe light on top of Cory's fish house sounds like a good idea to me. grin.gif

priorbass,

Glad to see you'll be able to make it to this one as well. I might have to turn your ear for a few minutes to let you know what I want to order for summer fishing.

To everyone else, see if you can grab Bill (priorbass) for a minute to show off the rods Midwest Rod and Reel built for Cory. I have one of their Tactical Ice Rods and love it. And, I've heard nothing but good things about their open water rigs.

Sweet Bill!!!!!!!!!

Just in time for Valentines Day! Now I don't have to go shopping......Your the best!

I can't wait to do a seminar at the Ice Series on Saturday.......Here are a few topics.....Let me know which you think will be most helpful?

"Flipping.....Not just for summer!"

I will go step by step on how to flip to your ice hole.

Or

"Skipping! Not just for snowmobiles!!"

This....I will take you step by step on skipping, and pitching under docks.

Both of these seminars will be done after the weighin on Saturday!

All aboard! Who's in for tomorrow?

There's no excuses. Warm, no wind. There's still plenty of ice. And, it's a fun lake to fish.

You're going to go fishing anyways, may as well do it with your friends at FM.

I know I saw driections to the Rush Lake event somewhere.. but I am a moron and cant find it to save my life... I know how to get to the baot landing on East.. but we will be on west.. correct?.. So, tell me how to get there please... Cory?

Just walk across the ice grin.gif

From 35 you're going to want to get off on 361/CR-1 exit and go west like you're going to East Rush. You will follow CR-1 west but instead of just going straight, you're going to want to take a left on CR-7. You will follow CR-7 all the way around and eventually go past the south end of East Rush (in the distance) and then the south end of West Rush. After you pass the south end of West Rush you are going to want to take a right in CR-4. CJ's will be down on your right off of CR-4.

Cory probably has a faster/better way, but that will get you there...

See everyone tomorrow!

Good Fishin,

Matt Johnson

Hey Deitz!

Take the Rush City exit go West the road will curve to the north following the lake, go past the public access to the first paved road to the West (County Road 2) Go 2-3 miles to County Road 4 (First paved road going south, just past the park) Go a couple mile to CJ's, they have a sign on the left side of the road, approximately a mile south of the West Rush Public Access.

Any questions give me a call! (612)801-0809

Looking forward to seeing everyone!!

Ray-

Willard and I will make it out there. We might be a little L8 and probably won't fish. I still want to pay the $15.00 for a good cause.

If you see a Silver Dodge Ram (Missing A Hood) frown.gif that would be me. I look forward to meeting all of you guys.

See you tomorrow!

What happend Cory I didnt see your name on the leader board at all? But I did see ya got a couple raffle prizes or atleast I thought that was you. We didnt do to well. Only ended up with 4 perch and 2 nice sunnies. 1.3 lbs oohh. Was gonna say hi to some of you guys but I was in a hurry because I had to be to work at 3:30 at Dennis Kirk so didnt get a chance. Man those boyscouts really hit those prizes hard huh. I was 1 number off for that lx-1 marcum. Oh well still was a fun outing and I'll be looking forward to next years event. And I also has a question Can a guy buy any of the fishing mn merchandise anywhere else besides on the web. Id like to get a hat like matt johnsons and get my name embroidered on there so people know who I am. A couple of you might have noticed me I was the only one there wearing an eye patch.

Fisherman69,

I was standing to the right of you during the drawings. Ya, those boyscouts did seem to have a good time.

It was fun to meet some of the leaders, and WOW what a great day!

Cory,

It was nice to meet you, And I will definitely take you up on your offer. Now, that this is all done with, I guess you can take that strobe light off the top of your fish house grin.gif Although, it might be nice if you left it on there tongue.gif

Thanks again to the Leaders for a fun day. Let's do it again next year!

Yeah I guess I didnt notice you but thats probably because I dont know what you look like and I had a patch on my right eye. LOL. Im looking forward to a smaller tournament next weekend on a lake I actually know well. So you can bet Ill be doing good in that one. I was suprised though at the quality of fish I cought. I figured since its such a popular lake that they wouldnt be but I guess I was wrong. One of the sunnies I caught was close to 9" long and I consider that pretty decent for this area.

fisherman69,

Yea, I didn't expect you to know who I was. But, anyways, I was wearing a forest green hooded jacket, just in case you might recall. But I remember seeing you, no offense, but it is kind-of hard not to notice a person with a white patch over his eye standing near me. Hope it isn't serious.

What a great day!

Got out about 7 am to a spot I picked out that Matt Johnson and I could take the boy scouts to. Got my son all set up for panfish and a tip-up out for pike and started drilling holes for the scouts. About 8 the scout arrived and were just getting set up when my son started yelling that he had a flag up. Talk about excitement, those scouts packed around to get a look at the action. With little coaching my son landed this very nice largemouth.

20050212image00021vt.th.jpg

We chose to release after the pics rather than try to get it to wiegh-in alive. We guessed around 4.5-5#. Now that got the scouts fired up to get fishing. About 1/2 hour later the winning Pike was caught right next to the scouts. Again the Scouts were very excited seeing that monster.

20050212image00101zj.th.jpg

The scouts were catching some panfish to keep them fairly entertained. There were also a few flags that went off in the group. Couple broke off and lost on the way in, but it was very cool to see the mad dash of scouts every time one went off.

20050212image00122vm.th.jpg

Spending the day with the Scouts was a very good reminder to me of what it should all be about. I think they all had a good time and all went home with a handful of prizes including one happy kid who won the Marcum Lx-1.

20050212image00215pe.th.jpg

My sone was able to wiegh-in a basket of 7 Crappie, 10 Jumbo Perch, and 4 Gills. He had 7.5#'s and release the big Bass. Would have taken the second place trophy but I was very proud of him not having any qualms about setting the fish free. But I think I will get him a trophy anyway. After the event Matt Johnson, Deitz Dittrich, Ray Esboldt and mt son and I tried afew spots and landed on a great Crappie bite that Ray and Deitz found earlier in the day. What a way to finish off a great day!

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
