I heard from a guy that it works good for the light biting walleyes. When you feel a fish grab the bait lightly, give it a buzz and they latch on. I haven't used one.... Just passing this along.

Good luck.
My brother got one for Xmas. We had the Aqua View down in a clear lake down here and watched it work. Sure puts a nice shimmy in the jig and minnow. Didn't bother the fish, can't say it caught any more than the standard straight rod. It does pretty much the same you can do with a tremble motion of your hand on a regular rod, now you just have to touch the button. An interesting concept. Bill

The buzz stick drives the sunfish crazy when you put a small teardrop on with a eurolarvae. When you stop buzzing, the sunnies usually slam the jig.
I have had mixed results with walleye and crappie. It definatly has helped trigger a strike but so does jigging.
The bad thing about the current model is that the battery cover which is the button you push is poorly designed. In real cold weather, you push the button and the cover comes off. Watch out cause most of the parts like to fall in the hole. shocked.gif If you look at the rods in the store, there is a piece of tape over the button.

well i guess it is a catch 22., yes i did think the tape was a little cheezy,i guess i will have to try it out to really see how it works.,at least it will keep me busy for a few hours? minutes?lol., thanks for all your imput., i will let you know how it works this weekend on low.,

I have heard that they are nothing more than a cheap fad. I won't buy one. South Bend makes the best rod for the money. Just my opinion.

You bet south bend makes the best rod, that's why you still shoot a 742 Woodsmater!
Get a Clue!!

Ouch, go easy there Ice Buster. Some people have a different deffinition of the "finer" things in life such as the Frabill Amplifier.

36inch MH Genz ice rod, in the baitcaster model.
Now there boys is a mighty fine spoon rod.
Don't waste you money on gimmicks.

No kidding, remember those stupid battery operated flashing glow jigs. As soon as the jig hit the water the battery would get so cold that it would stop working. Someone made a lot of money off of those Buzz Stix though. Who buys more junk then ice fishermen though?

Duck Hunters that's who grin.gifgrin.gifgrin.gif.
I think that perhaps this gimmick may have a place for fishing crappies. I would not be interested in using it for walleye.

Dr. Bob,
All I know is that batteries and ice fishing just don't mix. Escpecially the cheep watch type batteries that are used in the Buzz Stix. I think that you're correct with your panfish comment. I'll stick with my jigging stick for the eye's though. :-)

Icebuster, apparently you bought a "buzz stick".
If you would re-read my post, I stated I had "heard" they were a fad. I have not bought one, nor do I plan on buying one.
And yes, I do own a "wingmaster" also.

Mr. Anderson- Maybe you should reread my post and notice I am responding to your Southbend comment, and making a sterio type saying you probably shoot a 742 woodsmaster also. And I glad you think your southbend ice pick rods are the greatest.

I don't have lotsa money, so Ya gotta admit, $6 for a rod is a steal.
I've seen people hammer walleyes on wood 2x4's with line wrapped around them.
I figure the bobber does most of the work anyway.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end... The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free. Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well. Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike. Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River. Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently. Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn. Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options. Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River... Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service. The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing. Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues. A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River. Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise. Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale. The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st. Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing. One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker. Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle... A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water. In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener. Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years. Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads. Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water. Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad. Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
