I went hunting with river rat this morning. I got two drake woodies and Chris got one. Finn was being a pain in the butt and would not fetch Chris’s duck. Finn however fetched both of my ducks. Finn flushed a bunch of woodcocks on our walk out. Finn got muddy today

I tried a new spot this morning very near where a bunch of geese and some ducks have been loafing the last couple days. Got one goose and when I went to retrieve it all the rest of the birds busted out and never returned. Definitely a warm opener!

Yeah we'll see, maybe. I also lost 2 brand new decoys to as the weights didn't hold. I'm doing some digital scouting, might try a lake in the morning.

Good luck!

One goose and one woodie so far today.  And will probably be our total count.  Saw plenty of birds but in a new spot we didn't have dialed in until the end of the morning flights.

Well went out this morning to my dads pond and a couple woodies drop in before shooting time and Finn lost it and went to get them. I need to move my decoys out in front of the maple tree. I looked towards battle brook and here comes three ducks twisting and turning I see the big white bellies and dark front and thought here are some woodies. Bang bang bang splash splash and clean miss. I got so excited on the first double of the year. It was good I missed the last one Finn brought the first one up and it was a mergansers they sure came in like woodies. While Finn was getting the second one 5 wood ducks came screaming in and I had not reloaded.  Seen 6 more groups of woodies just out of range. Had 4 bluewing teal in the back end of the pond but they never came over. 6B4EC59F-DD5D-461B-A46B-F57E5690E8F6.jpeg

We've shot some woodies and teal. I found a way to get into an untouched section of river in thr metro which is amazing. No boats can make it in there, kayaks and canoes only. On opener we were completely alone. I shot a hen woodie with this neat looking band. Anyone ever seen one like this? I have no idea the story behind it.

Duck hunting was a bit slow this morning so we hustled over and set up for some goose field hunting. It wasn't an ideal set up for geese but they were flying so we threw some decoys out and ditched the pickup by some farm equipment.

I got one wood duck yesterday. I am killing birds with my first shot, but the second and third shots have not been good. Also how can you hit a little wood duck and miss a big ole goose? Finn was pissed off at this duck for moving after he brought it to me.

How can you miss a big ol goose?

Because you don't think you can!  Haha!

My first 5 shots of the season yielded 4 birds.  The one miss was my first try at my goose.  I told myself to pay attention and dropped it stone cold on the second shot. The head is the target, not the body.

So far this season I've missed some too but mostly it's been 1 shot; 1 dead bird.  And I'm not cleaning out shot strung meat either.  It's been nice and I owe it to shooting the sporting clays league over the summer.

Oh yeah, and I've been using #4 shot on ducks and BB on goose.

That is a crazy looking band for a duck!  I'm wondering if it might be someone's private band for some reason?

@MJ1657

Nice adjustment.  Looks like good smoker meat!

Marinated it in diet Coke and teryaki yesterday and grilled it over charcoal last night. It was delicious.

Sounds pretty good!

Or..

Brined in High Mountain Game Bird, brushed with olive oil before going into the mesquite smoke and finshed with a brush of Thielens teriyaki?

Had a fun morning. Not a lot of numbers but a nice variety. Buffleheads, ring necks, golden eye, and hooded Meganser.

Nice pics MJ.  Wish I were there wit ya's.

My only consolation for not being there is half of my electrical got done today and the other half will be tomorrow.

The shooting break tonight was kinda cool too.  I got my 7mm - 08 zeroed and was able to take some cracks with a 6.5 Creedmore and custom .300 mag.  The 6.5 was dinging the plate @ 800.  The .300 was making 700.  Couldn't get it consistent at 800 for some reason.

Those were some fabulous irons!

Not a lot of ducks flying yesterday. The three we did get decoyed perfectly so that made it fun. Pair of green wing teal and a ring neck. It was a treat shooting the green wing.

The egg sandwich was excellent.....

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
