The Extravaganza is a go!

Recommended Posts

Hay Minnkota! Thanks for wishing us all good luck. Sorry you could not make it this year. Maybe the great tourny in Victoria supported by Cabin Fever we can get together.

Jason or Dan, if we get up there late Friday night, will it still be possible to pick up some rainbows? Or will you be sold out by then?

Roooooster,

If you are coming from Chaska, I would suggest stopping at S&W first. If they don't have them, you might have a hard time finding them. Sportland and the Hot Spot also have good selections of bait, but you are best to hit first thing first. At this time we don't carry any live bait, just some goods.

Have a good Sunday Rooooster,

Walleyedan

p.s. The forecast looks encouraging......20 degrees next Saturday. This could be the best "X" yet!

Hi Rooooster, We will be loaded up with bait Friday. We will be open late on Friday and open again at 5:00 am on Saturday. If you stop in we should have plenty of rainbows. We won't be sold out.

Where are the different places you can buy tickets? Can you get them at Fleet Farm or Gander?

Will I be able to get to my house from the east side access or would it be a good idea to move it this week before the weekend contest?

Hey Jason(Sportland Bait), can I just pick up tickets for the Extravaganza at your bait shop when I go for the contest next week???

Yes, but I had a problem with interference . Last year in deep water with an fl-8 there was lot of interference. Very difficult to differentiate(sp?)between bait, fish, and interference. Not sure about the new flashers. I would imagine that they would work better with the zoom feature and all. Good Luck

Sounds like it will be closed from 10:00 p.m. Friday until after the contest.

yeah Dan, I saw his post of his hours, but I heard rumor that the tickets might not be available at Sportland. I was just trying to confirm or disprove the rumor.

No we haven't sold tickets the last couple years, we were just so busy it became a slow down but there are quite a few places to get them. Fleet Farm, Cash wise, S&W, the Holiday Stations, and there are probably more. I guess we just focus on what we are known for, great live bait and the latest fishing reports and tips. Good luck at the contest, be sure to stop in for some lucky minnows.

Sorry Dan, I didn't look up far enough.

Jason, why don't you sell the tickets anymore? It sounds like its a "slow down" for you guys? I'd say its a slow down for the customer now...

Why would I want to make two stops when I could just stop by S&W and get it all?

Thanks for the response though, now I know.

Acually the contest people would sell them here. We would give them a portion of our store to operate out of. The problem was they couldn't move people through fast enough. They would have 25-30 people standing around to get fishing and/or raffle tickets. That was in addition to all the folks getting bait. In our small shop that eats up a lot of floor space. It just was getting too crowded. It works out pretty good with the Holiday station selling them across the road. So far most customers have been ok with the situation. Most people are ready to hit the lake when they stop in to get the lucky minnows. Good luck and hopefully we'll see you on Saturday.

I need to get my ticket still and will be going through pretty late fiday night is there any gas stations or any place open past 11 i can get them? Other wise i can get them on the ice cant i the day of? Also i will be coming from a cabin on the lake so how early should my group leave pick there holes?

You should show up to get your holes when you want to start your party!!!! There is always enough holes it just depends on the availability of holes were you want to fish. I dont think location is a very big deal. Fish come from everywhere. Its like hitting the lotery, only fish. Trust me, I have yet to catch a fish at the contest or hit the lotery. Maybe you dont want to trust me!

I think the Holiday at Sportland Corners sells them and they are open 24hrs.

I read on the web site that they are selling tickets on the Ice and they can take credit cards this year. They can also just swipe your drivers license, then you don't have to take off your mittens to write>

I will fully agree with Dan on this one. 2 Sundays ago we hit 3 bait stores around Nisswa and we only found S&W to be open. Bought a bunch of stuff and I love supporting a place like that.

What do most people bring with them for gear and do they pull a small sled or is there no room for that, just a bucket?

Thaks for the help!

Some bring more than others but the basics are a small chisel, bucket or seat, your rods, tackle and a variety of bait. Locators, heaters etc are allowed but no shelters. The shuttle busses are very accomodating so they pretty much let you load what you need, sled included. I've noticed that the most successful anglers are the ones who come light and jump from hole to hole during the event. That's where the chisel comes in handy. Good luck Saturday!

Ok so i have a first timer question. I buy one ticket so i can fish one line. But he said something about going from hole to hole, so if there is a hole open someplace you can fish there? Or do you have to stay where you are?

Alright well thinking about making a last ditch effort to come this weekend and got a few questions.

Buy your own bait and bring it on the ice??

Tickets available on the ice right??

Is Video equipment allowed??

There is no bait that is sold on the ice. Otherwise you can get tickets at the contest before the start time and you can use video equipment if you choose.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
