Sea Lamprey?

4 posts in this topic

I have been fishing LOW for 35+ years. Last Friday (Dec 14) I was fishing in 25' off of Pine Island and caught my first Sea Lamprey. It was attached to a 14" Sauger and was 12" long. Has anyone else been seeing Lamprey attached to fish they have been reeling in?

Wow surprised you have'nt run across these little buggers sooner. I remember them back in the 70's... Nasty little buggers are'nt they!!! They're not Sea Lamprey but a fairly common native Lamprey. Nice BIG one you got too!

See quite a few on pike & sturgeon but not many on eyes & sauger. They give me the shivers & I give them the knife!

You should have weighed and measured that one. Could be a record.

I crossed over to the dark side of smallies about 15 years ago. Mostly chase pannies in winter but used to chase eyes a few times on the hard water each season.   I could post a ton of pics if you need more proof.

Sorry to make you hold up a bottom feeder, but we needed to see it!

I was up over the weekend and my shoreline was getting pretty sketchy.  Had a pocket of open water down the shore about a 100 yards. Where I could see the bottom in two to three feet of water.  Walked out about a hundred yards and popped four holes Saturday afternoon. There was 17- 18.5"s of ice in those four holes. Looking at the forecast I can't see the ice sticking around too much longer.  The holes I popped had 5-6" of pretty mushy cloudy stuff on top and about 12"s of pretty solid stuff underneath it.
