8/30 report

1 post in this topic

It was the perfect storm for a slow night, MN river spitting out chocolate, very little water coming over the Ford Dam (most was dry, just the area to the right of the dam had water coming through) and lots of junk in the water.

That said, there was still some action. We got about a dozen white bass, a surprise crankbait crappie (nice one, 3/4 lb 11"), 6-10 smallies but just one eye. Usually this time of year the river is full of 12-14" eyes, but we didnt get any of those, just one 20" fish. Also one sucker type thing that actually bit, it wasnt snagged. No sheepies-very odd.

There were fish busting the surface everywhere and lots of pods of 2-3" shad on the surface. With no current, feeding fish could use the whole river and werent concentrated. So it makes things more difficult and unpredictable.

Still, great night to be out. Few boats, great weather!

I grew up in this area and if walk in a ways  you can be all by yourself. Best time deer hunting can be during duck season when people are moving the deer.

Send me a pm for some ideas in the area. I plan on hunting Dayton and Monticello mainly but if those don't work out I need some backup plans.

I am with you, net_man.  I *hate* that I can't C&R walleyes in the fall.  I mean, what's hooking mortality at 6-12 ft deep with artificial lures in October and November?  I've never had a fish not swim away, and I can't remember one that didn't do it in a hurry.  Drives me crazy, as fall trolling on Mille Lacs is one of my favorite ways to catch fish.  This year, thanks to the weather, we did get out in December...and the fishing was nuts.  If only we had been able to be out all fall...   I wonder if the night ban in the fall (even if we haven't hit our quote) has more to do with enforcement than anything else.  I have no idea what's said at meeting I ain't invited to.
