Recommended Posts

Fished Dan's and Pelican Friday . . . VERY slow in both places, and very little activity on the vexi.

I had 6inch es of ice last night 100yds out from court house side. The middle was still open, I think the carp are keeping it open?

got out on a localwink lake this morning with my 4 yr old. Crappies were hungry today. Most fish were the 9.5" variety, but a few were 10.5-11, and also got a bonus 12.5, and 13.25". Two small pike were also eradicated(and eaten). Was my boy's first real ice fishing, so he had a blast. 001.jpg

Got out on a small, local lake on Saturday to enjoy the beautiful winter weather. 16 feet of water with crappies swimming around at 6 feet and sunfish stacked below them all the way to the bottom. My 4 year old had a blast catching the crappies when we found a hole that they were under at the time. Took home enough to feed the family last night and let the rest swim to catch later. Great way to start the season.

Is there still open water on Buffalo? I am coming home from college for a few days and would like to get out on Buffalo and chase around the crappies, I hear they are around 17'-20' is that still where people are having luck? Wish everyone great fishing and hope to see you out on the ice in the next few days!

I agree with bull_head. You can see the fish on the vex, but they just are not biting. Could be the 100's of shacks putting so much pressure on the fish?

Good day everyone and Happy New Year.

My name is Preda, and I really enjoy going fishing. Whether it be ice fishing, fishing from the shore, or my boat, I enjoy getting out as much as I can. I'm new to the area, I moved to the Twin Cities almost 2 years ago, but haven't got out much because I'm not familiar with any of the lakes. I'm looking for other companions around the area to go fishing with and show me the local lakes and what they have to offer.

So if you would like a new friend or a fishing buddy, please let me know and I would definitely like to get out on the lake with you.

I'm actually heading out to either fish Independence, Pulaski, Sugar, Clearwater, or Cedar Lake tomorrow. If you would like to come along, I'd be more than happy to have a companion or two. I do have a popup ice house that accommodates 2-3 individuals.

Thanks again, and hope to hear from you soon.

Preda S.

Thanks so much for the reply.

I enjoy fishin for just about anything, I just enjoy the outdoors. But if there is something at the end of the line, I would prefer it to be crappies, walleyes, pike, perch, bluegill, or bass. Lookin forward to fishing with you in the near future. I don't know the restrictions of this website, but are you allowed to give your contact information within the chat room?

Thanks for the replies.

If anybody plans on going fishing and would like a new friend/companion or would like to come along with me during my fishing trips, please give me a holler. You can contact me at [email protected] or [email protected] or on my cell at 605-786-4208. I'd be more than happy to develop new friendships being new to the area.

Agian, I plan to head out tomorrow, and then again on Saturday. I have a Eskimo popup, along with an extra fish flasher that someone can use.

Thanks again, looking forward to hearing from you.

Walleye_fisherman,

I was actually out this weekend with a friend of my wife. We went out to Independence Lake on Saturday, at about 3am-9am. We were hitting the crappies pretty good in about 20-25 fow. The crappies were anywhere from 9-11". I would definitely like to get out again as soon as possible, but I don't think it will be till the weekend of the 24th, because I have things to do off the she-do list. But I would definitely like to get out with you if your interested. The next time I go out, I'd really like to get out and see if I can try to find some walleye. Since I've been in MN, really haven't had to much success in finding the walleye.

Give me a jingle, you can contact me at my home e-mail at psourasin at comcast dot net or my work e-mail at psourasinth at deltak dot com.

Looking forward to hearing from you. Let's go fishin.

PS

Hey government,  Just give us choices. I don’t care what people use as long as as it works for you. I’m needing a new weed eater. Plan on a Stihl FS 40 easy start. I’m done with the cheaper brands. Just don’t last long enough.  Probably true with the Stormy Daniels of the world as well. Cheaper don’t last long enough 🤭

If you turn on a movie they survive the 20min ride just fine. After many controlled experiments, I've found that they survive much better if you show "Finding Nemo" instead of "Jaws."

Quick update: Lucky 7 now has rainbows, fatheads, crappie and light pike in stock. If I remember correctly, scoop of rainbows was $8.99.  Stopped at L&M in Virginia. Rainbows $6.99, fatheads and crappie minnows (scoop) $3.99. I was billed $6.99 dozen for rainbows, but was given a healthy scoop!

I have had the same old Strikemaster augers for years, take care of them and they will last a long time.   I think E-augers are nice for around home lakes or at the cabin. The thing that was a eye opener to me was being in D-Rock in New Brighton getting new blades and there were two guys that just got back from a week in Canada on a big ice fishing trip and both very pissed off at their e-augers dying! They were both buying new gas augers.

On the south end...   Things are shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener which takes place Saturday, May 11th.  Recent rain has brought up the water levels, which were low.  The walleyes and saugers are in very good shape across the south shore.  Expectations are high. The goto presentation this weekend will be a jig and frozen emerald shiner or other kind of minnow.  Emerald shiners are a staple in LOW and walleyes love them.     Hook the shiner through the mouth and out the gill.  Push the minnow all the way up to the jig head and hook the minnow as far back as possible.  This will give you a better hooking percentage.     Jig sizes and colors?  This is stained water so you can get away with a big heavier jig, which is nice for those who don't fish a lot.  It enables them to have more control and feel the bottom.  A quarter ounce jig is a good size for starters.     In stained water, gold, glow white, glow red, pink, orange and chartreuse, or a combo of those colors, are great places to start.   The limit of walleyes and saugers is a combined limit of six fish, up to four of the six can be walleyes.  All walleyes between 19.5 - 28.0 inches must be released.  One fish over 28.0 inches can be kept.  The possession limit in MN is one daily limit of fish. Whether intentionally or unintentionally, there will be some good pike caught this weekend.  The pike season on LOW is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one fish allowed more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. On the Rainy River...  Sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River has been excellent.  The catch and release season is May 8 - 15.  The keep season starts up again July 1st. FYI, there will be some nice walleyes in the Rainy River for the fishing opener.  Lots of sturgeon anglers are reporting big walleyes being caught on sturgeon rigs! Up at the NW Angle...  Angle resorts are ready to roll for the opener.  As many of you know, this is the area of LOW where the islands begin.  Lots of structure.     Go to spots for walleyes, neck down areas, shoreline breaks, points and bays which will have warmer water.  In true NW Angle form, be ready for a mixed bag of fish.  In addition to walleyes and saugers, pike, jumbo perch, crappies, and even a few smallies and muskies will be caught.   Again, the goto presentation will be a jig and minnow. Slow trolling a crankbait will also produce fish if need be.

Totally disagree Gim. I have a gas Jiffy legend auger. Never issues. Take a little time to care for it before putting it away and good to go. Sincei started using non oxygen gas, startron and seafood in never have issues with my 2 strokes.   seafood???   I'd try seafoam!!!   🤣
