FISHING OPENER REPORT-OPEN WATER-2007

HI GANG,

WELL MOST FOLKS STARTED OUT DOING POORLY ON SATURDAY, I TALKED NUMEROUS GOOD FISHERMAN, THAT HAD 1 TO 4 KEEPER WALLEYES FOR 3 TO 4 GUYS. WE WORKED HARD FOR 8 WALLEYES (3 GUYS) IN ABOUT 4 HOURS IN 35 FOOT OF WATER, TRIED ABOUT 6 DIFFERENT LOCATIONS. THEN WENT BACK TO THE CABIN FOR THE AFTERNOON. WENT BACK OUT, MOST GUYS LEFT THE LAKE DUE TO BEING SLOW, HOWEVER THAT WAS A HUGE MISTAKE. THE 2 GUYS I HAD IN THE BOAT & MYSELF DECIDED TO STICK IT OUT TILL DARK, ABOUT 8 P.M., WE WENT TO A WINDY SHORE IN 11 TO 14 FOOT OF WATER, USING LINDY RIGS & LEECHES...AND BINGO WE HIT THE JACKPOT. KEPT OUR LAST 4, RELEASE SOME FISH & THE GUYS I HAD WITH GOT TO EXPERIENCE RAINYS AWESOME FISHERY., NEXT MORNING THEY WERE LOOKING FORWARD TO GETTING UP & GOING AGAIN. MINNOWS WORKED, BUT TODAY I'M GETTING A LB. OF LEECHES.

I had the same results at first we worked for the walleye, but at sunset we did pretty OK. The guys with me had fun during the slow mid-day throwing for northern.... Its only going to get better from here on...

Minnows & Leeches? Anyone use a crawler this early? I'm not sure if Woody's has bait, but I believe it is close by. Hopefully leeches are working as that is always a fun way to catch'em.

Went yesterday to the north side of Sand Bay (Canada) fishing shoreline with cranks & jigs hoping for bass. Got zip. Water 56 degrees.

Went all the way up to Rice ? Bay where you go under the two bridges (resort next to highway bridge on northwest side). Lots of dink pike and tons of baitfish suspended. But sadly not one bass to be had off any of the shorelines I tried. Got one big crappie and a perch on jigs but no walleyes either.

Look for out croppings, broken rock, boulders and last years weeds in the warmest water you can find. Catching lots of large females in 3 to 8 ft of water tossing tubes and crawfish imitations. Work slow and it may take 4 or 5 casts at a likely spot to get one to go. Be accurate with the casts and the fish will bite. Try a little dead sticking also. (Did you try any senko's, Hint Hint)

I had very good luck Saturday but no bass Tuesday. I always throw soft plastic - I like Flukes or Fin_s-Fish better than Sinkos but about the same action (sloooow sinking with little twitches thrown in. Husky Jerks & X-Raps to cover water fast then soft plastic or tiny jigs once I know they are there. I fished water like you recommend since it payed off Saturday.

Bass just weren't hitting for me. I was surprised at the small size of the pike compared to what I have been catching since ice went out - not one decent one in the batch. I know many spots to fish on North Arm but continue to have poor luck when I try further south.

Give me a hollar when you have an opening and the bass are snapping. I need some confidence building elsewhere than the North Arm!
