After a nice civil debate, I agree with everything you said on your last post. Go Twins!

Can't have a gold glove 3 bagger that's not a run producer at 3rd.

Why not? I am confused as to what the award is for again?

Oh wait here is what the award is for. I guess it doesn't mention anything about RBI production or really anything about hitting ability at all. Go figure.

In American baseball, the Rawlings Gold Glove Award, usually referred to simply as the Gold Glove, is the award given annually to the major league player judged to have the most "superior individual fielding performance" at each position (in each league), as voted by the managers and coaches in each league

Well if your confused, watch Punto continue to play the way he has and watch someone else win the gold glove.

And after he continues to slump offensively, watch him from the bench.

WHat's the lowest batting average to ever win a Gold GLove?

I bet it isn't .225

While Punto has a great glove, it's hard to say he's Gold Glove caliber when we don't see every 3rd baseman on a regular basis. Plenty of home town bias here.

Great glove or not, he won't last long as an everyday player if his average continues to struggle to stay above the .200 mark.

When Doug Mientkiewicz was here, plenty of people were very against getting rid of him because he had a great glove. How many of these people would trade Morneau right now to get Dougy back? He's still got the great glove!

Oh, how quickly we forget!! Doug Mientkiewicz led the majors in batting over half of the season the year he won his gold glove. I know my argument has been hitting shouldn't have anything to do with the award- but I am just pointing out how good old Dougie hit that year.

PS- I am just waiting to hear about the bad throw that busted Justins schnoz. He could have caught the throw, but the baserunner kind of blocked his vision. Eric Chavez threw the ball 2 rows deep into the stands on an errant throw to first today, too. Just wanted to get that out.

Dougie M. did have one good year at the plate, this is true. My point is simply that no matter how good your glove is, you probably won't last long if you can't hit. Teams continue to take a flyer on Mientkiewicz because of his well deserved reputation in the field. But there's a reason he doesn't stay in one place very long.

A huge reason he doesn't stay in place for too long as well is his salary:

2003 Twins:$1,750,000

2004 Twins/Red Sox:$2,800,000

2005 Mets:$3,750,000

2006 Royals:$1,850,000

Alot of dough for a decent hitter, with a superb glove.

BUMP BUMP BUMP BUMP.

Good time to get this thread going again.

While hitting should never come into play when deciding a gold glove, unfortunately it does. Puntos stock is getting more valuable every game.

ESPN's John Kruk called Punto a Web Gem God. Sounded like he is a genuine fan of Punto's fielding abilities. It would be interesting to see stats on which players have been featured on Web Gems or Play of the Day the most often. Punto would have to be right up there.

Funny, I haven't seen much of the Punto bashers here lately. They have to be miserable because their beer is cold, the weather is awesome, and Punto is playing well. Nothing to b1tch about.

I put this back on here and he goes 0-5 last night. Maybe I shouldn't have said anything. I am kidding, BTW, he will be fine.

since you put it back to the top, I still don't like him.

Chicagos 7 hours east. I'm sure with the real estate market, you can find a place. grin

Sled, I will eventually come around on Young, but his "D" drastically needs to improve. I don't mind Kubel anymore, and a year ago- I didn't think that was possible.

I don't watch baseball to see web gems.

You must be asleep half the game. Watching Twins games definitely isn't about the HRs.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
