where do you take your furs??? I called my guy in fosston and he is giving 20, but thats for large unskinned. I should learn to dry and strech them for the extra $$$, but oh well, i dont do it for the money, its alot of fun besides.

Got 2 small ones this past 2 days. We tried skinning the one and are going to try to sell the other. Set a stretch of river today that had 3 lodges on it, so hopefully will collect some tomorrow. How much does it cost to send in a beaver hide and get it tanned, and where do you guys send it to?

I just brought by carcass to Runningens whole and let them skin, flesh and dry it. They send it somewhere in Canada, and you get is back in a few months. They cost about 40 bucks each last time I had it done.

They look pretty cool draped over the back of a couch.

Yeah I have done a fox and a raccoon with him that way. Today we got 6 beaver in 10 traps floating the river, and tomorrow we will pull the rest of the traps and call it a season until next fall. The biggest caught was 50 lbs 6 oz. We brought the 6 beaver to Dusty at The Fur Shed, and only averaged just under $10.

I completely skin and flesh them just like I do all my deer capes and take them in with a load to the tannery in Rice (not to sell them). I've never taken a beaver hide in there but a deer backskin is about 30 bucks to have tanned so I'm guessing beavers are close to the same. I think it's totally worth it...those beavers hides from a commercial tannery are absolutely beautiful. They are great for putting on a small table, top of a book case, on the back of a recliner in your man room, etc..just about anywhere. I like to display my sheds on them. Good luck to you guys still at it - I think I'm going to pull mine this week...turkey season is soon for me!

Congratulations! You had a very good spring season. I am glad to see your trapping efforts come together with some fur in the shed.

Here are a few that I got this Spring.

Picture060.jpg

These are 5 of the 6 that we got one day. We lost one because we swamped the boat trying to get out in the fast current. Luckily that is all we lost.

Picture042.jpg

45, 46, and 22 lbs

Picture044.jpg

45 lber from same spot as the 3 above

Picture052.jpg

25 lber from a small creek

Picture047.jpg

another one from the same spot as the one above, 22 lbs.

I didn't get a pic of the last 4 that we caught because I just plain forgot.

Does anyone know if any of the counties have bounties on beaver caught in them?

to get the bounty you have to get a hold of the dnr and get the permits and then if you get the ok, then you call the county and see if they have any problem beavers. It's not the free for all like it was a few years ago. I got 5 beavers today, 2 big and 3 small/med. Going to give it til next wed. So far i have gotten 15.

There is always a lot of beaver around, its just that now I'd rather leave the spots that I can do good in for fall when they are worth a little more.

Finished up my line this last week, ended with 51, also have a few problems to get rid of so it might grow. Got a $12 average for them. Now its time for the gophers.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
