$1 fee on license for deer processing

After deer hunting in Iowa the last couple years, what if the state did like Iowa does: Non Resident Deer hunters must also purchase a non resident small game license and habitat fee. Overall I would like to see our out of state fee's increase for non residents, and use that money to pay for the processing.

I am not for new taxes, especially taxes to build stadiums for professional teams with billionaire owners. Will the dollar kill me? Nope, I have donated deer before and paid the processing, and I will probably do it again this year, but that is another story.

I don't know about the rest of you but I would gladly give up another buck for a decent site tag. I hate fumbling around with all the string and such. Also, how about a decent license for your fish house. I almost had to laugh when I got out to the lake this winter and realized I did not have any duck tape with to attach that little piece of paper to the house. shocked.gif I can't wait for the return of the sticky back tags. Like that will ever happen smirk.gif

I didn't see in the bill where the $1 surcharge was called a 'tax' but if that word bothers people, how about calling it a 'user fee'. That seems to be the popular phrase now.

"HUNTERS PAY FOR XXX DEER DONATED TO LOCAL FOOD SHELVES"

Wouldn't that headline in the Strib generate positive feedback for hunters??!

it is my beleif that the systems of charity in MN are already abused to the point that they should be restructured to work with the funds they have. Adding another dollar to a broken system will benefit no one. Some who use food shelves, temporarily to get their feet under themselves, deserve to be there. Those who use the poor me attitude, beleive that I owe them something, and teach their kids to use the system instead of becoming productive citizens, turn me off to this system. Anyone in need can come to me and I will and do help them out. I do donate to food shelves, as I know some need help.

As far as forcing another $1 down my throat. I already pay my share of taxes.

For those who think the system works in Mn, do a little research on how the food stamp program runs. It is so easy to use those funds for unintended items it is unbeleivable.

If that and other welfare programs worked the way they were intended, there would be a lesser need for more programs and fee increases to cover them.

Headlines I'd like to see: THOUSANDS OF ABLE BODIED PERSONS IN MN GET OFF THEIR BUTS, TURN RESPONSIBLE, ELIMINATING THE NEED FOR GOVERNMENT PROGRAMS.

Once again this is my opinion. Brent

Call it what you like, a tax is a tax.

Ya it would generate positive feedback. However, the Strib would never publish that headline.

One could donate the deer hides to pay for some of the processing costs!

My fear, like several people I talk to would see this as another opportunity to "blast away" and not worry about how many deer they can pile up because in they can use the "feed the needy" excuse to stoke their own egos and kill all the veni. possible without having to do any of the work that goes along with it.

I think the most standup thing to do is process your own deer if you are able bodied,even if you can afford to pay someone to do it. If you never have, trust me its a full circle kind of feeling whereby you can appreciate the gift of hunting even more. If you choose to give away properly managed and harvested deer, then go ahead. I just hope people are doing it for the right reasons.

The part about us hunters taking on the burden of the rest of society, what else is new...

Why do we always have arts piggybacking for a free ride to the monitary promised land;

anti's saying stop the cruel hunter, yet never donating one dollar to create or improve habitat;

farm bills becoming less and less helpful to wetlands and riparian zones when I don't remember any duck hunters draining sloughs ever...

boilerguy, there was good article in last Sundays Strib about ethanol and using corn vrs switchgrass and talking about the starches/sugars/cellulose conversions. Very informational for a lay person.

Cool. I have to see if I can access it. If so I'll read through it and, if possible, fill in the blanks for ya if you're interested.

"Surcharge" and "user fee" are both merely politically correct terms for a TAX, IMO.

      With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

      On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

      Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

      Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
