Thought I'd start fresh. So it looks like an event is being planned on Forest the 10-11 weekend? Cleanup/fishing day? Saturday works for me. Pehaps a 2 day event? Hopefully getting out on the ice will be easier. OlMatty, when is the plastics clinic? Yesterday was not my day............

All colors will work but red and yellow seem to be better then the rest. Pink plastics or yellow will do you proud as well. We need someone to plow an access out to second so if you have any means to get that done that would be great. I don't know if my wheeler is up to the task but if the temps keep up the way they have we shouldn't have too much of a problem. I'd bring crappie minnows, a few fatheads, euros and some waxies and I believe Matty will bring the plastics and show us a good way to fish them. I am hoping to get out there tomorrow to meet up with you guys!

We'd be out about 1 p.m. but if you guys want to fish early that'd be cool. The bite is good on most of the lakes right around here right now for panfish but it'd be cool to meet up with some fellow fm'rs and be able to point you in the right direction. Hope to see you out there! We aren't the prostaff by any means but we like to fish and that is where it is at in my book!

Good luck folks! I wish I could be out there but I'm still working an overtime schedule. Good news is this is my last saturday of work for a while. Message to the ice......"DON'T MELT TOO FAST".

Was out today 1230 to 4pm there's plowed road to spot. U can use either ideal road or willow point. Once u get out of ideal road follow the road then turn left as for willow point stay on road and turn right into road.. For colors I had seen guy had success with red eurovlarves but any color shld be fine. For plastics I was successful with bright colors and blood red work pretty good for lures shld bring horitzonal, vertical jigs head size 10 to 12 shld be fine. Also small size spoon work pretty good they was hitting my spoon and its attract them too. It was slow for awhile till mayb 130 to 2pm they was hitting the plastics! I will be there 1230 to 1pm Shld be good bite tmw.. I wld recommend any1 to bring waterproof boots it will be warm out tmw.. See everyone tmw!

My wife and I made it out last night on 3rd lake. I drove out in my grand cherokee with no problems. As long as you have decent tires, you should be able to get around. Crappies were biting. Managed to sort through the little guys and find some nice keepers including a fat 11"er. On a sidenote, regarding the 2 perms left out on 3rd....I ran into a gentlemen trying to (unsuccessfully) remove one of them last night. Anyone know what fines/penalties the DNR has handed out in the past in situations like this? I'm just curious.

Crappies were cooperative but not much to write home about for size. Had a good time meeting some good guys out on a new lake for me. Cleaned a few but nothing over 8". I need a meal next Friday. Why do burgers sound good on Fridays during Lent?

Hey guys, had a good time puttin' some names to faces. The fish numbers were high, but the size we don't need to talk about. Fun just to be out on a day like that. I went with some neighbors out to the north hole today for a few hours. Same story over there. Lots of fish, but not much size. The four of us caught over 200 fish, but only kept about 15 for a meal. What a nice weekend to be ON THE ICE.

P.S. Thanks to the guys who gave me a tug out of the slush bank Sat. at sundown!!!

Fishingtech, tell him to get a handle and stop lurking or others might get paranoid! It was good to meet you guys hopefully you caught some fish to take home. Satchmo, I may need to chat with yu about some alternate riggin on my boat for this next year. That is your area of expertise is it not?(as well as fishing?).

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭

Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
