I deffinatly would not drive out there yet.. I was out there checking it about a week ago..and it only had 4" in a very large area. Caution should be used for sure.. I ended up not even fishing it as it was risky.. I was afraid I would hit a thinner spot.

Went out Sat. afternoon-evening and did well on crappies. Fished about 20-25' of water and found a lot of suspended fish (real light bite). Was wondering if anyone is having any luck with eyes' on this on lake?

83- Great to have you with us.. Welcome to FishingMinnesota and IceLeaders...As far as a consistant eye bite.. I have yet to find a decent one. I can find the smaller ones.. but eaters are hard to come by. I can think of a lot better places to go and get eyes...

Ain't that the truth about the 'eyes out there. I haven't caught one over 11" in about 6 years! Every time I go out thinking that there should be a few grown up ones, but nope. Kind of weird.

Yeah the small guys are definitely out there. I agree there are better spots to go for walleye than South Center that are fairly close. Just wanted to see if other people have been getting the same results. Thanks for the welcome Deitz.

As I stated in a previous posting I would get back with my Pancake Island Report. The fishing was slow, but thier was a couple of nice Pike caught and released on tipups by one of the best local area fisherman "Johnny Mobile". I myself had some luck catching Sunfish moving around a bit.

I think with the weather, things were tough a bit all over. Any picts of "Johnnie Mobiles" fish? And being from the "local area".. what is Johnnies real last name?

Yes I have pictures, but not quite sure how to load them in here? The first one that was caught was about 8 pounds and the next one was probably 6 or 7 both released of course. We measured the ice thickness to be at or around 22" They were both caught on tip ups and were alot fun bringing them through the hole. No your right Johnny Mobile is not his real name we will keep that secret for now. So Stayed tuned for more fishing tales of one of the best local area fisherman around Johnny Mobile

What is the most productive area/depth for some decent crappies this time of year? I know there is always pancake island but I tend to fish on the deeper side of the lake. Just wondering if anyone is having any luck and if they have any areas that are producing. Thanks!

THANKS DD, I TRIED OUT IN THE HOLE IN ABOUT 30-40 FOW AND CAUGHT A MIXED BAG. NOTHING TO SPECTACULAR BUT ACTION NONE THE LESS. MAYBE NEED TO TRY YOUR SPOT TO DO BETTER, I ALWAYS SEE HOUSES THERE AND THEY SEEM TO COME AND GO SO I WAS WONDERING IF PEOPLE JUST GO THERE BECAUSE THERE IS A CROWD OR BECAUSE THEY CATCH FISH. THANKS AGAIN!

Mr Dittrich

I have also winessed the famous "Johnnie Mobile" in action this year. He came down my way in mid January and landed a 35 1/2" pike tail first shocked.gif on Lake Frances. For a guy who loves his crappies second to none, he's had a good year catching pike. Also, thanks for posting that pic. It was most appreciated!

BPB-I'm not sure I did anything to deserve the title Mr.Dittrich.. but thank you. Posting the picture was no problem at all. It was a very nice Pike for sure. I would like to see JM in action some day.

Wondering if it is possible to drive out to the island with a front wheel drive car,or is there to much snow?

Thanks,Walligator

there is little to no snow on the ice, even less ice after today.. The only spots you would have to be aware of is where people had a permanent house if there was a drift by it.

HeyBigPointBlake,

The only person I have ever witnessed better at catching big Pike would be "the living legend" of ice fishing himself and I am not talking about Dave Genz either....

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
