Our next event is Feb 26 at a “Mystery Lake” location. I’ve got something pretty neat in store for this location. It’s an entirely private body of water and most of us (if not all of us) have never fished. As I understand it, there are crappies and sunfish in here. View the link below for more details…

http://tylerholmoutdoors.com/uplr/news_schedule.html

Also, you might notice another UPLR event added to the list. We are having an ice finale UPLR event on Saturday, March 24th. This will be a daytime event and it again is going to be a Mystery Lake. The location will be chosen according to ice conditions.

How are we all going to fit on that little pond that the people have between their golf holes on 63? grin.gif

Any guesses? Mine is for the pond just north of Fosters.

I think it is bamber. I got to fish it once as a guest. And I was allowed to keep i think ten sunnies and five crappies. I had a freezer full at home so i was on catch and realese day. The largest sunnie i caught was like 11 inches and we caught 16 inch crappies. The guy who managed the lake checked us to make shure we where not tresspassing. But he told us where to catch some walleyes. In the last hour of dark 3 of us caught 25 walleyes. From like 16 to 24 inches. From that day my goal has been to find a way to afford living on that lake.

Whistle Binkies on the lake ( Lake ) is the location of our Mystery Event for Feb 26. You can park in the Whistle Binkies parking lot and access the ice from the land adjacent to their building. See you on the ice for registration around 5:15. Please be mindful that this body of water is private and we have been granted a 1 time access permit for the duration of the UPLR event.

If you’re not familiar with the area, you’ll need to take Hwy 63 (Broadway) south to 40th St . Turn left on 40th, and then take another left of the frontage road. Follow that road until it comes to Whistle Binkies on the Lake .

We will be having the optional big fish challenge for this event.

Good Luck to all.

  • 2 weeks later...

This Thursday is the much anticipated Foster Arends UPLR event from 5:30-9:00. Registration will take place on the ice starting at 5:15 near my shack (Green Otter).

Please view the website for details and I'll be sending out an email with even more details soon.

If you’re not on the email list, drop me a note indicating you'd like to be added. I'm sending out details on open water events as well as a potential “Sucker Run” event(s).

If the temps continue to soar, this very well might be our last UPLR ice event, so make sure your there.

We're still planning on a finale event on March 24 if the ice permits us.

Well, the 10 day forecast shows highs in the mid 40's and lows in the mid 20's. This is perfect ice fishing weather. From the looks of those temps I'm hoping we still have ice for the March 24th even. We might loose a little each day, but I'm optimistic that the event will be a go.

We’ll have to see. I’m pretty sure the Zumbro will be open by then but I’m hoping at least one of the Rochester area reservoirs hold decent ice until then.

See you Thursday!

Hopefully you guys will catch some trout out there on Thursday. I was out there on Monday and only managed about 10 small sunfish and one small lg mouth bass. As I was leaving the DNR was backing down to stock it with some more trout so hopefully those trout will be hungry for everyone out there.

The physical ice structure on Foster is in good shape 10-12”. There are two open water springs on the North end that one needs to stay away from. They are easy to spot in the daylight.

Now I need to mention the shoreline. There’s a good sum of water and sunken ice around the shore making it difficult to get onto the ice. Please be advised of this and take precautions. Waterproof boots are the bare minimum, with waders being the optimal solution. Another option would be to walk out on the dock and step down to the ice.

I’ll be wearing waders and accessing near or on the public dock in the SE corner.

See you out there for registration at 5:15.

Thanks Tyler for all the work you put into the UPLR ice season. I only went to two events but had a great time at each of them.

Last night was pretty tough to get the panfish to commit except for Crickschop tongue.gif. Way to go first place winner.

I sure wish smg and I would have landed the hogs we were fighting. He broke off with his and I came unhooked with mine. mad.gif

Thanks guys,

It was a fun event and likewise it was good to see some youngsters (and awesome that they both caught fish and won prizes!).

I won't have the results done today, but maybe by the end of the weekend or early next week.

I'm also ironing out the details for a few Sucker Run events.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
