The Ultimate Panfish League - Rochester (UPLR) - Ice

Recommended Posts

penguin- I'll more than likely have some minnows, and you can take as many as you like. At the last event I think I only used one. I find its hard to fish actively with minnows, but you gotta have them in case thats what they want. Also, you can get the Oxygen bags at HOF for like .50 and they usually keep pretty well in there.

Yep, I'm sure you could get a few minnows from most anybody and I will have a few extra on hand as well. Glad you can make it Penguin. If you drop me an email I'll also put you on the email list that includes UPLR updates and announcements.

I will update the UPLR website and post here on FM the location of the "Mystery Lake" late Sunday evening. It will be late because I'll be in SoDak all weekend and I won't get home till midnight on Sunday.

Nice job Tyler. Way to spread the word. I think you can count me in for monday... though I hope I can bring a friend with. That will help keep it a little warmer in my shack as well with the great temps coming!

i don't know how willing everyone will be to do this but with some of the small bass tourneys i participate in the winner gives little ditty at the end on what the keys were to sucess. It is always educational and i don't think ever harmful of the winners sucess. I know i have learned alot by doing this. I think it would be great to have the winner keys posted up so guys like me that don't jiggle stick can hear the intesity of a competetor. What do you guys think?

Ike,

I think you have a good idea and make a valid point. Of course, its up to the winner if they want to share their secrets, but I think this would be a helpful gesture. Thanks for mentioning it.

I vote not Chester. I know people have been fishing on it, but it was scary seeing that open water. See my post on area ice. If it is Chester, I'll be fishing bottle bass on my couch and hoping everyone stays as dry as I will be. Seems like the smaller places are the only safe ones. My guess is it's going to be KR-7 or Foster.

Kalmar, KR7 is going to be our Mystery Lake location.

I've had a few sources tell me that the ice is 4-8" thick with most of the ice 4.5-5". The ice thins right around aerator pump, so I recommend keeping a distance of at least 25' from it. Play it safe on the ice at all times.

Registration will take place on KR7 at 5:15. We will meet on the water somewhere around the aerator (you'll see a small crowd). I'm going to run quickly through a rules meeting immediately after registration, and we'll be off and fishing.

Expect depths of 10' or less with weeds in many areas. It's quite a haul from the parking lot as well, but that's fishing.

Good Luck

Exit off of 52 on 55th street, go west on it until it becomes west circle drive. Keep going south until you get to 19th street and take a right. You will come to a stop sign, go straight and watch on the right for the parking lot. It is off of the road maybe a quarter mile, and there is a sign, but it isn't a very big sign. If you need further instructions you can call me at 507-421-9963

Holy cow! I just read the PB story about the UPLR and one quote stuck out to me."they were all young men (the oldest probably 35) "That would make me the elder wiser confused.gif

fisherman.I don't think I can take that kind of pressure.

Tylor you've got to get C.T. out to the next location so I'm not the old guy out there. laugh.gif

Just a reminder...

UPLR will be enforcing the minimum size limit on Chester as well (7" for Bluegills & 15" for Largemouth Bass).

Look forward to seeing you on the ice! Check the website for updates.

Anyone from Zumbrota/PI plan on attending mondays event. If so I have a few things that I would like to drop off with you to give to Tyler for the contest. Thanks

Our UPLR event last night was another successful evening at Chester Woods. We had 22 folks in the tourney which is our most to date. Of all the fish that were caught at least 95% of them were successfully released back into the water.

If your even remotely interested in fishing one of these UPLR events, drop me an email so I can get you on the email list.

I’ll have the results and some pictures posted this evening.

  • 2 weeks later...

Registration will take place on Lake Zumbro at the Ponderosa public boat ramp at 5:15. I'm going to run quickly through a rules meeting immediately after registration, then we'll be off and fishing.

If you plan on driving on the ice, please use extreme caution and keep speeds under 15-20mph for yours and everybody else's safety.

We will be having the optional big fish challenge for this event.

If have not been receiving emails about UPLR, please email us and we'll get you added to the email list. There's lots of good information we send out in email that is not posted on the website.

Well, it looks as if me and Al might finally get to enter one of these. Looking forward to it Tyler.

And, if and one is interested, we have room for one more person in our hard sided hut.

Not me, I've been out there three times in the last 2 weeks and cannot get a pattern at all. The first time the fishing was hot, and the last two I was struggling to find fish at all and when I did they weren't biting. Tomorrow night should be interesting.

Good luck Jonny (buzzin) i would love to see you go 2 for 2. i think it will be interesting as well. By the sounds of it from more than one person things have been rough out there lately. i think this is for a number of reason. Access has become easier and the human count has gone up and this makes all the fish a little wiser because the dumb ones have found themselves with a hurt face or in a tummy.

good luck to all of you. ike

Just thought I would pass along some neat info, we made this weeks edition of Outdoor News. Page 31. It is pretty much just a repeat of the article that John did for the post, but I thought it was pretty neat though.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?
    • LakeofthewoodsMN
On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
