Taking the family to Shagawa for vacation in mid-August. Would like to know if the fish are hard to pattern at this time (perch, rock bass, crappie or bluegill for the kids and walleye, bass or pike for Dad). Any info is greatly appreciated.

Welcome to FM chudman! Shagawa has turned back on recently. Come August you'll be working the reefs and sunken islands mid-day. At night, stinky ditch has turned into a regular factory as usual right around sundown. Olson bay is good during the evening as well. Good luck and have fun. By the way, if you want to have some fun with kids, take em right across the road to the fishing pier on Miners Lake. Always a hit with the kids those rainbows!

Come on people let's get some good reports and idea's for shagawa. This is the Ely forum and this lake is right in Ely. I also will be heading up in week to fish this lake, and would like to hear from the locals.

Not many Ely "Locals" on this site. Maybe Stfcatfish or Chunkytrout will see it.

If you get a chance, go to the Grand Ely Lodge on Shagawa, have a beer & a burger, and ask for Bob the Bartender. He'll smile and say "Leaky sent ya, didn't he."

He doesn't get a chance to fish Shags, but he's there every day talking to people who do. Nice guy and will help you how ever he can.

Good Luck!

PS: Chunky's read was right on!

I'll have to say moving to our new home away from the cities is kind of lam on New Years eve.  No one yelling, banging pots and pans, shooting fireworks or gun shots!  Boring!!  🙄  😒

On the South Shore...  Ice fishing is in full swing on the south shore of Lake of the Woods, with resorts and outfitters continuing to report solid ice conditions. A colder weather pattern is expected over the next couple of weeks, which will further strengthen ice and ensure safe and productive fishing. Many resorts have sleeper fish houses on the ice, offering anglers the chance to spend extended time fishing in comfort. Most fishing activity is happening in 24-30 feet of water, where anglers are reporting steady action. While some sorting is required to find keeper-sized fish, buckets are being filled with quality walleyes and saugers. Jumbo perch, northern pike, and large eelpout are also adding excitement to the mix, with a few sturgeon showing up to surprise anglers as well.   Anglers are using the one-two punch of jigging in one hole and deadsticking the second hole.  In the jigging hole, your favorite jigging spoon in gold, glow red, glow white, pink, chartreuse or a combo of these colors.  Rattles can help as well in the stained water.   On the deadstick, a small jig with a live minnow hooked behind the dorsal fin set 6 inches - a foot off of the bottom is working well. Although every ice road is different, many are now allowing mid-sized vehicles as ice thickness improves. Be sure to check with your ice road operator for specific conditions and weight limits to ensure a safe outing. On the Rainy River...  The Rainy River continues to produce great results for those heading out. Anglers are catching good numbers of walleyes and saugers, with several nice-sized sturgeon showing up nicely for those angling for them. However, caution remains crucial on the river, as ice conditions can vary significantly due to the current. Catch-and-release sturgeon fishing has been excellent, offering a thrilling battle for anglers seeking a unique challenge. To stay safe and maximize success, always work with a local resort or outfitter familiar with river conditions. Up at the NW Angle...  Ice fishing going strong up at the Northwest Angle.  Resorts have fish houses out with anglers already enjoying excellent success. The NW Angle is delivering its usual consistent fishing, with a nice mix of walleyes, saugers, jumbo perch, and pike being caught. Resorts and outfitters in the area are working hard to ensure safe ice conditions, with marked trails and ready-to-fish houses set up for a seamless experience.  Check with your favorite NW Angle resort for details. Good news for snowmobilers: the snowmobile trail from the south end of the lake across the ice to the Northwest Angle is staked and open!  Scratchers are recommended with some melting snow last week. Happy Holidays from Lake of the Woods Tourism! Tight lines and safe fishing!

@smurfy those deer river workers are union workers, Im a scab working further north. We gave our nurses like a 16%-19% raise this year. They're not union, they're kind, they're good and we appreciate them and take care of them, they've never felt the need to unionize

Burning time is really the only answer, like you said, unless it’s a calculated way to keep viewers tuned in and jacked up.     Too clinical.  But I’m no football fanatic.  I say, if you got the horsepower, keep the hammer down.  Dan Campbell seems to play that way.  4th and goal; go for the touchdown and get it over 50% the time.  Net +1 point for every 2 tries instead of settling for field goals.   We’ve seen the Vikes lose to too many “Prevent” scenarios in the past.  Thankfully it’s been in their favor lately, under O’Connell.  I cringe, waiting to see that bubble burst again.

Great question.  There's 32 defensive coordinators in the league to ask.  You let me know when you find out!

Nice report.  By this coming weekend with the below temps, things should start moving on the ice again.
