Joel, I am pretty sure me and porter will both be attending, I don't know what the exact plans are yet but we'll be in touch here sometime soon.

Cheffrey, did you ever hear if we are allowed back in Ely after our last BB???? grin.gifblush.gif

Quick, they passed a city ordinance banning your party from entrance to any bar within the city limits (but Samz Place and the Long Branch in Winton still would be available). But then they realized that this is the Range, and if they stopped someone from going in a bar, no matter how much pain and suffering and public endangerment said ruffians caused, the city fathers would be hypocrites, as well as unconstitutional. So the council rescinded the motion. I kept all that out of the paper as a favor to you guys. crazy.gif

This newbie will be there with some of the boys as long as someone keeps the cabin road plowed!

Gary,

I'm guessing one or more of you will be booking a room for the weekend. If that is the case will someone save me a little spot on the floor in case I'm not able to find a place after I get my work schedule figured out.

I don't want to book a room somewhere just to cancel it later if I find out I can only make it up for the day. That would just screw someone else of a place to stay.

One way or the other I will be seeing you guys for this event.

Take care,

Tom (BD110)

Jan 27th is the same day as the Fun Run so get your lodging taken care of as soon as you can. Also most places are going to require a 2 night stay. Paddle Inn still had a few rooms available.

  • 2 weeks later...

I'm gonna try to make it to this year's Bash. Didn't make last year's but it sounds like a blast. STF, ST, CT, you guys all deserve a big hand for what you're doing. Organizing that kind of thing is no easy task I'm sure, and it's good to know there's guys like you around. Also very knowledgable about B-Side, I got a lot of tips from you last year during school. I'm back again this year and hope to finally meet you. Thanks again and keep up the good work! Think ICE!

Just booked my room for the weekend. Only problem is the paddle inn is 14 blocks from the wabbit. grin.gif

Yes, Cheffrey, but once you stagger up the short hill from the Wabbit, it's all downhill to the Paddle Inn. Considering how poorly the streets are plowed here, you might be able to slide the whole way, especially if you've got a nice west wind (or the Ely cops) behind you. grin.gif

Cheffrey who is staying with you? We may have had room for ya. I think its me, BD110, Loonasea and Ripstick and we have 2 rooms. Oh well we will all be hangin together anyways and then we will have room for more people when we get closer.

STF if I remember correctly it is quite slippery there in Ely so I may indeed be able to slide all the way there. blush.gif

Northlander, to this point I believe Quick is camping out with me. Are you at the paddle in too?

No matter how you look at it there WILL be some more good stories coming back with the crew thats being put together this year.

I don;t have my "on-call" schedule for that far out, but if I am not on-call I plan on going but might be late in finding a place to stay. May have to sleep in the back of the truck. Anyone gotta small generator?

Any chance that I could jump in on one of the rooms at the Paddle?? Even a spot on the floor for a sleeping bag works for me. I will be up for sure for saturday night, and possibly friday if i can clear friday off work.

Chris, I am planning on going and taking my new sleeper, I think I will have room for you to tag along with me, should be able to let you know soon. Give me a call if you want. 879-6237

Joel I dont think you will be able to pull that sleeper on the ice up there. Always seems to be slushy and the roads arent wide enough for you to turn around on. Thats a pretty big rig for Burntside. If your just bringing it to sleep in then it would be no problem. You could just park it in the upper lot at Van vac and take your portables to the lake.

We'd better make some good ones, I think everyone's a little tired of listening to your fictional tales of what went on in algoma (especially marshall and I smirk.gif) We might want to leave the perma frost at home though...

Porter, you bring the frost and I'll bring the cards. If you need a place to stay I believe there is a chair in my room with your name on it, though you can only read it upside down. smirk.gif

BTW, keep your clothes on this year.....

C'mon ICE!!!

Steve, Thats what I am planning on. Bringing the house to sleep in on shore and I am bringing the portable and 4 wheeler for the lake.

Joel,

That would be great, I'll give you a call tonight. I would plan on driving my truck up in any case, as I'll be pulling the sled and bringing the Otter along. A spot in the sleeper would be appreciated (last year Chunky and I each slept in our trucks in the upper lot, not bad with a buddy heater and sleeping bag, but the truckbed wasnt the most comfortable grin.gif)

When would you be heading up then? I still have to see if I can get friday off work so I can go up early friday AM.

Not sure yet, but I am guessing Friday sometime. More likely I'll leave right from work at 3 pm or get out an hour or so early. We still might be able to take one vehicle, I got a crew cab and the portables will fit in the ice house. And we probably wont need a wheeler and a sled just one or the other. Talk to you soon.

Not very familiar with the Ely area at all. I was thinking that my son and I would head up for this event as I have always wanted to attend it, but my schedule has never allowed it. Couple of ???

What side of the lake will the access for this event be located on?

Where is everyone staying? How far is the Super 8 in Ely from this event?

Link to comment

Paul, the access is on the south shore of Burntside. It's easy to find and we'll post directions closer to the time of the event. The Super 8 is most of the way through town toward the east on Sheridan Street (Hwy 169), the main drag. And the Bside turn is back to the west of town about three or four miles (you'll pass it before you hit town if you come in from the west). But it doesn't matter. Never takes you more than two minutes to get from one end of town to the other, so you're just fine.

And from the Super 8 you'll have a smashing view of the log Ely Chamber of Commerce Building across the street. grin.gif

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
