Two important announcements!

Two important announcments!

I am pleased to announce that there will be two area ice fishing gatherings this year.

The first one is the 3rd annual Backwater Brawl. The date is February 3rd 2007. This gathering takes place at Pontoon Slough on the dike road between Wabasha MN and Nelson WI.

The Backwater Brawl originated a few years back and has gotten considerably better each year. It’s a great way to meet the people that post on FM and you will get to see a lot of FM sponsors products in use.

One of the nice things about this location is we are all fishing pretty close to each other. Makes for good conversation and snacks. (Hint, hint MetroJoe.)

Here it what last years event looked like.

The second event is the Zumbro Zinger. March 10th 2007. This will be the second year FM has gotten together on Lake Zumbro for a FM gathering. Last year we met up at Fisherman’s Inn and convoyed down the lake to another spot where some decent crappies and bluegills were caught. Lots of fun!

Here's a couple shots from last year!

Looking forward to the Brawl. I've got the dates on my calender. I'll have to take the boys out tip up fishing a couple weeks before and see if we can't bring a few extra jars of pickled pike this year. wink.gif

In all honesty, I can hardly wait for these events. They are just a great opportunity to get out and enjoy the outdoors with others alike. Whether you’re new to the sport of ice fishing or “been around the block” these events are a must.

There’s loads of fishing knowledge and insight shared. You can see “hands on” some of the latest and greatest electronics in action. It’s likely you’ll be able to pickup some tips on how to modify an ice shack so it fits your needs. But atop all that, I think the best part of these events is getting the chance to meet (face to face) the other FMers that we chat with daily.

You know what Shawn? I think everybody is gonna bring something so although I think it's a nobel idea, don't knock yourself out to bring too much OK? Last year there was plenty of chow to go around.

And ya, some venison chops would have been good too! wink.gif

Is there a place close by where I can get a day license nonres. and how much.Coming up from Iowa is this place hard to find?ICE JOHN

If you come up 61 there is a bait shop at the east side of the intersection of Hwy. 42 and Hwy. 61 near Kellogg. Shorty's can fill your needs I would think. Otherwise there may be an E.L.S. somewhere else on your travel.

Not sure about a non-res day license price. Pontoon Slough is a very easy place to find. Cross the bridge in Wabasha toward Wisconsin, 2nd parking lot on the right.

$9.50 for a 24 hour NR license, any walmart or gander mt. along your rout should also have them, but shorty can hook u up to if u come through kellogg, try using mapquest.com for directions, i've found this website to be worth its weight in gold when looking to get somewhere, bascicly once u get into wabasha cross the bridge to wis. and right after the bridge look to your right you will see all kinds of backwaters and there will be cars in the little parking lot right off the road, your looking for pontoon slough

This Saturday has a forcast of some bitter cold. Feb 3 Partly Cloudy, 5°/-1°. That might be a little too cold for a good time. We have had to postpone it before so what do you guys think?

I’m all for chit chatting during these events and I agree the freezing weather is not very conducive for chatter; however, I vote to keep it the same weekend. My schedule is already booked for every other weekend this winter so I would not be able to make the rescheduled event.

Boilerguy-

Lake Zumbro is only 10 minutes from Roch.

I guess the cold is more like a normal Minnesota winter. And, Tyler you are right. A lot of people may already have made plans to attend so keeping it the same date makes sense.

With the early ice out, how is the curlyleaf pondweed doing?

On the south end...   The big basin, otherwise known as Big Traverse Bay, is ice free.  Zippel Bay and Four Mile Bay are ice free as well.  Everything is shaping up nicely for the MN Fishing Opener on May 11th. With the walleye / sauger season currently closed, most anglers are targeting sturgeon and pike.  Some sturgeon anglers are fishing at the mouth of the Rainy River, but most sturgeon are targeted in Four Mile Bay or the Rainy River.  Hence, pike are the targeted species on the south shore and various bays currently.   Pike fishing this time of year is a unique opportunity, as LOW is border water with Canada, the pike season is open year round. The limit is 3 pike per day with one being able to be more than 40 inches. All fish 30 - 40 inches must be released. Back bays hold pike as they go through the various stages of the spawn.  Deadbait under a bobber, spinners, spoons and shallow diving crankbaits are all viable options.   Four Mile Bay, Bostic Bay and Zippel Bay are all small water and boats of various sizes work well. On the Rainy River...  Great news this week as we learned sturgeon will not be placed on the endangered species list by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service.     The organization had to make a decision by June 30 and listing sturgeon could have ended sturgeon fishing.  Thankfully, after looking at the many success stories across the nation, including LOW and the Rainy River, sturgeon fishing and successful sturgeon management continues.   A good week sturgeon fishing on the Rainy River.  Speaking to some sturgeon aficionados, fishing will actually get even better as water temps rise.     Four Mile Bay at the mouth of the Rainy River near the Wheeler's Point Boat Ramp is still producing good numbers of fish, as are various holes along the 42 miles of navigable Rainy River from the mouth to Birchdale.   The sturgeon season continues through May 15th and resumes again July 1st.   Oct 1 - April 23, Catch and Release April 24 - May 7, Harvest Season May 8 - May 15, Catch and Release May 16 - June 30, Sturgeon Fishing Closed July 1 - Sep 30, Harvest Season If you fish during the sturgeon harvest season and you want to keep a sturgeon, you must purchase a sturgeon tag for $5 prior to fishing.    One sturgeon per calendar year (45 - 50" inclusive, or over 75"). Most sturgeon anglers are either a glob of crawlers or a combo of crawlers and frozen emerald shiners on a sturgeon rig, which is an 18" leader with a 4/0 circle hook combined with a no roll sinker.  Local bait shops have all of the gear and bait. Up at the NW Angle...  A few spots with rotten ice, but as a rule, most of the Angle is showing off open water.  In these parts, most are looking ahead to the MN Fishing Opener.  Based on late ice fishing success, it should be a good one.

Nice fish. I moved to the Sartell area last summer and just thought it was windy like this everyday up here? 🤭
    • Rick G
Crazy windy again today.... This is has been the norm this spring. Between the wind and the cold fronts, fishing has been more challenging for me than most years.  Panfish have been moving in and out of the shallows quite a bit. One day they are up in the slop, the next they are out relating to cabbage or the newly sprouting lilly pads.  Today eye guy and I found them in 4-5 ft of water, hanging close to any tree branches that happened to be laying in the water.  Bigger fish were liking a 1/32 head and a Bobby Garland baby shad.   Highlight of the day way this healthy 15incher
